A good morning/afternoon to you all! I am Katerina Torres reporting live in ESS-CBN

News Center Manila
Our headlines for today are:
1. A possible cure for cancer is discovered
2. NASA to have a talk about astronomy in the Philippines

In the city of Las Pinas, two doctors successfully passed a research paper regarding the
use of gamma rays in order to cure cancer cells. Here is Katerina Torres live in St.
Elizabeth Seton Hospital to interview doctor Marasigan and doctor Lopez.

Goodmorning Dr. Marasigan. Im here to interview you on the effect of gamma rays to
cancer treatment.
Kathleen
Goodmorning to you too! So first, you have to understand that one way of curing cancer
is through the use of radiation therapy, a therapy that uses radioactive waves to cure
cancer. During my research I successfully found out that gamma rays actually reduce
the size of the tumor and may eliminate cancer cells.
Spencer
Yes that is correct! In the therapy, gamma rays actually affect the very DNA of the cancer
cells which causes damage beyond repair that stops the reproduction of these cells. But
careful placement and correct angles are vital to reduce side effects. Or else, the damage
of living cells may happen.
Kathleen
Another thing that we also found is that gamma rays can also be used in cleaning and
sterilizing instruments.
Spencer

And also we would like to say that we are currently working upon a research paper
which shows that gamma rays can indeed be used to study the functions of organs
Kat
Thank you very much for the information Doctor. We hope to hear more of your research
next time! Back to you Kat!

Kat
Thank you Kat! In other news, NASA tells that they are going to have a talk about
astronomy in the Philippines. Here is Iverson Conseja live in Texas.

Iverson
Good morning Professor Ramos. Im here all the way from the Philippines to have a heads
up regarding you talk in the Philippines.
Leiya

Good morning to you too! That is correct we will be having a talk about astronomy for
all the aspiring astronomers in the future. The talk will cover the origin of the big bang,
the planets, stars and gamma rays.
Iverson
Can I ask a question?
Leiya
Sure go ahead
Iverson

You said something about gamma rays. Can I know why is it important in the field of
astronomy?
Leiya

That’s a good question! Actually we astronomers use gamma rays since they are
produced by the hottest and most energetic objects in the universe, such as neutron
stars and pulsars, supernova explosions, and regions around black holes. On Earth,
gamma waves are generated by nuclear explosions, lightning, and the less dramatic
activity of radioactive decay. They are detected using dense compacted crystals since it
passes through almost anything. In space we use gamma rays to detect the elements
present in other planets such as Mercury. I could go on for days discussing this but I
believe that the rest should be reserved for the talk itself. See you all there!
Iverson
Thank you very much for that Professor Ramos! Back to you Kat!
Kat
And that concludes our news for today! See you all in tomorrow’s news!
