Introduction

Groundwater is a major source of water supply for drinking, irrigation and animal husbandry in
many countries, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. It is also a vital element of groundwater
dependent ecosystems such as wetlands. Regular and systematic monitoring of groundwater
resources is necessary for its effective management to support the water needs of the environment
and its citizens.

Therefore DISTAMBEN and BGR are at the planning stage for a Groundwater Level Monitoring
Programme in Banda Aceh and the closed region. DISTAMBEN and BGR will built up a small
network with new drilled observation wells (3 inch diameter) and equipped with automatic data
logger for groundwater-level measurement. An annual budget and a permanent staff capacity will
be needed to sustain the intended groundwater monitoring programme. The size of a sustainable
monitoring network can be calculated by distributing the available budget over “network
maintenance (including replacement and adjustments)”, “data collection”, “laboratory costs” and
“office work”.

In the first stage DISTAMBEN and BGR drilled 5 Monitoring Wells in the city area of Banda Aceh
(Figure: 1). Three Monitoring Wells (MW 001, MW 002, MW003) are located parallel to the coast
line, in the deeper aquifer ( > 150m) to monitore the water level, conductivity [EC] and temperature.
Before logger installation, the wells tested and sampled.
Two Monitoring Wells (MW 004, MW 005) are located in the hinterland quite close to the airport.

One data logger is installed by the Krueng Raba River to measure the surface water behind the
small dam (MW – 006) in the karstic area a few kilometres south-westwards from Banda Aceh
(Figure 2).
