BRIEF IDEA ABOUT THE CONTEXT:

Art is brought alive through love in O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf”


and there lies the beauty of the story. The last leaf consist of four
human characters named Sue, Johnsy, Behrman and Doctor. And also a
non-living character Pneumonia. Johnsy falls ill with pneumonia. She
binds herself with such a strange fancy that she would die when the last
leaf on the ivy vine falls. Sue, a caring friend of Johnsy consult the
Doctor. The Doctor says to Sue that Johnsy has left one chance in ten.
And that chance depends on her want to survive. Behrman, who had
fatherly figure for both two artist paints last leaf on the vine clinging to
its stem around the wall. Seeing the leaf Johnsy decided to live. But
Behrman died of pneumonia in the same hospital. Actually Behrman
Had sacrificed his life for Johnsy

Teacher shows them a slide.

LEAD IN
Teacher introduces the students the theme of the
story. Teacher says to students about the importance
of having friend’s in one’s life. And teacher also
discusses the sacrifice.
Teacher introduces them the author O .Henry and
gives them a brief description about him.
O. HENRY, pseudonym of William Sydney Porter, was
born in Greens boro, North California on September
11, 1862. He was an American short story writer,
whose tales romantiazed the life of ordinary people in
New york city. His stories express the effect of co
incidence on character through humor, grim or irony.
They often have surprise ending which become
identified with his name, O Henry

Stalk- move quietly and slowly
Curative power- power to make somebody.

Merciless- showing no mercy or pity
Palate- a thin board on which an artist mixes colors
with painting.

Questioning section
The teacher allows some students to read the passage
loudly. After that the teacher ask them to form groups
and also ask some questions from the lesson to each
group.

4 How did Johnsy correlate the leaves with her own
life?

Discourse instruction
Teacher ask the students to write the character sketch
of Behrman and Johnsy.
