1 INTRODUCTION

Founded by Professor Mohammad Mukaddam in 1976, AL HAI & AL MUKADDAM FOR

GEOTECHNICAL WORKS L.L.C. (AHAM) is established in three sectors of the U.A.E. Musaffah –
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Industrial Area, and the main office located in Dubai Investment Park- Jebel Ali.
With our 42 years of remarkable experiences in conducting and analyzing geotechnical investigations
we have come across all the possible problems and unexpected situations that have resulted from
this region. On various circumstances, we are commissioned to act as a third party in order to solve
the different types of geotechnical problems that arise in the region. When it dealt with the prestigious
large projects in the U.A.E. we are also called upon at times to set the geotechnical specifications of
contracts before the tendering stages. In addition, our extensive large data base of investigations in
the region entails us great advantages in promptly recognizing reoccurring problematic situations,
which can therefore benefit clients in taking the necessary actions in order to save time and costs.

In all geotechnical investigation undertakings, we work very closely with the client’s engineers by
providing them with the investigated data of unexpected situations as soon as they are discovered.
We also offer continuous support in all queries and meetings long after the investigation is completed.
It is our mission to be persistent in supporting our clients regarding geotechnical issues until the
foundation work is entirely completed.

Working through our three offices in the main sectors of the United Arab Emirates (Sharjah Industrial
Area, Dubai Investment Park – Jebel Ali & Al Musaffah - Abu Dhabi). We are in an efficient position to
move around easily and take on several soil investigation jobs simultaneously AHAM likewise
accommodated major projects not only within U.A.E. jurisdiction but as well as in Qatar, Bahrain,
Pakistan and other regions. Working with a fleet of 28 drilling rigs that are of different origins, we can
perform many different types of drilling techniques and complete large soil investigation jobs in the
time required by our clients.

In order to make the best of utilizing resources in the U.A.E. we operate our own manufacturing
workshop where we can fabricate our own drilling tools and recently we have manufactured our own
drilling rigs. This advantage makes us very responsive in analyzing problems that occur on site with
equipment breakdowns. We also store excessive amounts of spare equipment that do not need to be
imported and therefore save a lot of time and delays during operations. We are also very proud to
mention that our drilling techniques always produce core recovery not less than 90% at all times. On
many previous jobs we have been called in because other local contractors were not able to achieve
the required core recovery. Most of our machines are of the newest models which are designed to
address the most up to date environmental and safety issues. We operate one of the largest
laboratories specializing in geotechnical and material testing while utilizing the most recent equipment

and facilities that are not only locally purchased but imported from international leading
manufacturers. All our equipment are properly calibrated by Dubai Municipality Dubai Central
Laboratory Department or an ISO certified agency having a DM-DCLD traceability or an agency
having traceability with National or International Standards.

2 PROJECT WORK PLAN

2.1 WORK SCHEDULE/OBJECTIVE

Works shall be carried out by placing the rigs based on the list of co-ordinates provided by the client.
In the case where special NOC are required to conduct the work, those areas may be postponed to a
later stage in order to save time.

The objective is to produce accurate, high quality sub-strata definition, soil classification, soil
parameters and groundwater data by investigation and testing and to ensure a high level of quality
management during the work and to complete the project within the planned finish date & planned
resources.

2.2 SURVEY PROCEDURE

All the boreholes for the project will be set out using a combination of survey equipment such as
Trimble 5800 GPS System capable of providing (X, Y, Z) coordinates to an accuracy of 10cm, a hand
held GPS and a Nikon DTM 821 field station. The survey crew will set out locations prior to the start of
the work.

The reduced level at each point shall be recorded during the course of setting out. The location of
each borehole, test, etc. shall be identified by a steel pin. Set out locations where heavy vehicular
movement is expected shall be protected by safety ribbons.

All coordinates and elevations shall be related to DMD Datum or a local TBM. The survey shall also
take as-built co-ordinates and elevations of the works carried out on site.

2.3 SAFETY INDUCTION

Before mobilization and any equipment can commence, a general safety induction for all allocated
personnel will take place, addressing all general safety measures that must be taken into
consideration regarding the issues related to the geotechnical investigation. The general issues will
relate to the nature of the project regarding remote areas, different terrain, restricted areas, large area
coverage and other related issues.

PROPOSED PROJECT DEIRA WATERFRONT
DEVELOPMENT ON PLOT NOS. 14-19 @ DEIRA ISLAND,
DUBAI
M/s. AE7.
Date: 09/01/2018 GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

2.4 PERMITS AND ACCESS (NOCs)

In the case of areas in the vicinity of developments, the local municipalities shall be approached and
required documents containing the location and description of work will be submitted, all exploratory
locations shall be submitted and all NOCs for water, electricity, sewerage and other services shall be
obtained.

In order to maintain a high standard of safety, all exploratory hole locations shall be inspected by
conducting a CAT scan (utility identification) and hand excavated pits to a depth of 1.2 meters to
ensure that no services are present.

2.5 DRILLING & EXCAVATION

The drilling of boreholes will consist of cable percussion drilling (using the shell & auger method), in
soil strata, followed by rotary drilling in rock strata. The shell and auger method shall be used to
conduct SPTs, obtain small & bulk samples and to progress the hole to the rock strata. The rotary
drilling method shall be used in rock to obtain cores with a HWF double tube core barrel. Details of
drilling methods are attached in the method statements.

In all locations drilling using both shell & auger drilling & rotary drilling techniques maybe required. If
rock is encountered then rotary rigs will follow on the same borehole to obtain rock cores. There are
two criteria’s that govern the switching from percussion drilling to rotary drilling which are:-

 The lithology identified by the site engineer on site is rock.

 Two consecutive SPT counts of greater than 50.

It is highly stressed that the second criteria is not governing but is rather used as guidance.
However, the first criteria is mandatory and the switch maybe made regardless of the SPT count
if the substrata formation encountered for more than 2.0 meters is classified as rock.

In the case of rotary drilling, we are very confident that with the use of our equipment and expertise
we can always achieve a minimum of 90% core recovery, by using our rotary rigs that give the driller
the options for varying all parameters such as torque, bit load, bit speed & water pump pressure with
the use of Guargum drill slurry and HWF core barrels. The Guargum allows for cuttings removal with
low water flow. This gives the advantage of coring with minimum water pressure as to not wash out
the core. Each rig shall be equipped with two core barrels and a sufficient supply of core bits and
associated accessories, in good and working condition.

3 METHOD STATEMENTS
3.1 SURVEYING FOR GROUND INVESTIGATION
 Purpose
Establish the locations of the works on site.

 Scope
Survey shall be carried out in order to locate all boreholes, trial pits and all other investigation
locations. All works shall be related to the UTM WGS84 Datum.

 Pre-requisition
o Trimble Base Station & Receiver
o List of nearby control station
o List of available NGMs

 Methodology
The positioning system used for the project will be Trimble 5800, which is an all weather,
radio based, satellite navigation system that enables users to accurately determine a three-
dimensional position. The Trimble system's primary mission is to provide passive global
positioning and navigation for land, air, and sea based strategic and tactical forces. The GPS
receiver measures distances between satellites and itself to determine the receiver’s position
from intersections of the multiple range vectors. Distances are determined by accurately
measuring the time, which a signal pulse takes to travel from satellite to the receiver.

The GPS receivers use the satellites as reference points for triangulation of their position on
earth. The position is calculated from distance measurements to the satellites that are
determined by how long a radio signal takes to reach the receiver from the satellite. To
calculate the receiver’s position on earth, the satellite distance and the satellite’s position in
space are needed. The satellites transmit signals to the GPS receivers for distance
measurements along with the data messages about their exact orbital location and
operational status. The satellites transmit two “L” band frequencies for the distance
measurement signals called L1 and L2. A minimum of four satellite observations is required to
mathematically solve for the four unknown receiver parameters (latitude, longitude, altitude
and time).

 Receiver Set up
At a known control station or NGM, one GPS receiver is programmed with the known
coordinates and stationed over the geographical benchmark. This receiver, known as the
master or reference unit, remains over the known benchmark, monitors the movement of the

11

rover (secondary mobile GPS receiver), and calculates its apparent geographical position.
The inherent errors are determined relative to the master receiver's programmed position and
the necessary corrections or differences are transmitted to the mobile GPS receiver.

 Antenna and Height of instrument

Height of instrument (HI) refers to the correct measurement of the distance of the GPS
antenna above the reference monument over which it has been placed. The HI will be made
from the monument to a standard reference point on the antenna. HI measurements shall be
determined to the nearest 1cm. It should be noted whether the HI is an uncorrected height or
true height.

 Survey technique
RTK surveying requires dual frequency LI/L2 GPS receivers. One of the GPS receivers is set
over a known point (reference station); while the other receiver (rover) may be free to travel
from point to point. If the survey is performed in real time, a radio link and a processor or data
collector are needed. The radio link is used to transfer the raw data from the reference station
to the rover.

The survey will setup the base station and walk around the site with the rover until the
location of the works is located.

3.2 BOREHOLE EXPLORATION USING CABLE PERCUSSION

 Purpose
To explore the in-situ conditions of the subsurface in soil and weak rock, conduct in-situ tests
like SPT, to record the Ground water table, and collect small disturbed and bulk samples of
soil, weak cemented sand and rock.

 Scope
To drill borehole at specified location, to a specified depth, conduct specified in-situ tests,

o The split spoon sampler or solid cone shall be connected to the string of AW
rods or Square rods and lowered into the borehole with the automatic drop
hammer connected to the top of the drill rods.
o Markings of 75mm shall be made on the drill rod for a total of 450mm, with
reference to the top of the outer drilling/boring casing.
o The test shall be started by driving the drill rods using the automatic drop
hammer.
o The counts required for penetration of each 75mm shall be recorded in the
observation sheet.
o If the seating drive is not penetrated with 25 blows, then the length
penetrated for 25 blows shall be recorded, and further 300mm shall be
marked.
o The test is deemed to be over upon reaching a penetration of 300mm for the
test drive. If however a penetration of 300 mm in the test drive could not be
achieved because of hard strata, then the test shall be terminated on
attaining 50 blows, the penetration required for driving these 50 blows shall
also be recorded. The test shall also be terminated if a total of 50 blows are
not able to drive the sampler for 300mm from the start of the test.
o When tests are conducted in soft rock, using a solid cone at the base, then if
a penetration of 300 mm is not achieved, the test may be terminated after 50
blows are reached.
o Once the test is complete, the drive rods are removed and the sampler
opened.
o Preserve the soil sample from the last 300mm as small disturbed sample.
o N value calculated and recorded.

 Precautions
o The borehole shall be clean down to the test level to ensure that the test is
performed in relatively undisturbed strata. While cleaning the borehole with
the bailer, the bailer shall be withdrawn slowly to prevent suction &
subsequent loosening of the soil to be tested.
o The casing shall not be driven below the level at which the test shall be
conducted.

 Pre-requisite
o Equipment
Open tube sampler (Dia: 100mm): Open-tube samplers (OS) consist of a
sampler tube with overdrive space and a sampler head with non-return valve
tube. The sludge tube shall provide an overdrive space into which the softened
material in the borehole can pass. The non-return valve ball and seat shall be
adequately sized, so as to permit the free escape of the contained water and air
when the sample enters the tube, and close tightly when the sampler is being
withdrawn
Open tube samplers can be:
1. Thick wall: Thick-walled open-tube samplers are mostly suitable for stiff and
dense soils and for soils containing coarse particles. The thick-walled open-
tube sampler is usually regarded as a category B sampling method.
2. Thin wall: Sampling using the thin-walled open-tube sampler is usually
regarded as either a category A or B sampling method, depending the soil
conditions

Piston sampler (Dia: 100mm): The piston sampler can be used in low-strength
fine soils such as silt and clay, including sensitive clays. It can be used either in

boreholes or be pushed directly into the soil. The piston sampler consists of a
sample tube containing a close-fitting sliding piston, which is slightly coned at its
lower face. The sample tube is fitted to the sampler head, whereas the piston is
fixed to separate rods. This passes through a sliding joint in the sampler head
and up inside the drill rods. Clamping devices, operated at ground level, enable
the piston and sample tube to be locked together or the piston to be held
stationary while the sample tube is driven down. When shearing the sample, the
piston shall be released or firmly fixed to the ground surface before further
advance of the sampler is made. A movement of 1 % of the length of penetration
in the piston rod due to tension is acceptable. The length of advance of the
sampler shall not be more than the intended length of the sample to avoid
compression of the sample.
Sampling using the piston sampler is usually regarded as a category A sampling
method

SPT sampler: Sampling using the standard penetration test sampler is usually
used as a category C sampling method (see Table 1). In certain homogenous
fine-grained soils, it can also be used as a category B sampling method.

Dynamic sampling (Windowless sampler): A windowless sampler consists of

a hollow tube with a plastic liner and fitted with a shoe having a sharp cutting
edge at its lower end. Windowless samplers are used to take samples by the
application of dynamic impact or by percussion. After driving and removal from
the soil, the plastic liner is removed and wrapped in cling film for delivery to office.
The empty part of the tube shall be removed prior to wrapping.
Sampling using the windowless sampler is usually used as a category C sampling
method (see Table 1). In certain homogenous fine-grained soils, it can also be
used as a category B sampling method.

Handling & Labeling of undisturbed samples

After the sample tube is removed it shall be immediately cleaned from the
outside, sample removed for a depth of 25mm from both ends and waxed and
shall be preserved from wind and direct contact to sunlight.

An arrow shall be painted in ink indicating the top and the bottom of the sample.

o Disturbed Samples (Split Spoon Sampler)

After conducting an SPT test, the sampler is removed from the borehole. The split
spoon sampler shall be carefully opened.
The top 150mm of the sample, supposed to be taken in the seating drive shall be
discarded. The balance sample shall be placed immediately in a plastic jar and
the lid must be closed to prevent the loss of moisture content.

o Water Sampling

Water samples shall be obtained in every borehole in which water is

encountered. The samples shall be collected in containers which are tightly
sealed and marked. These containers shall contain the borehole No. from which
they were obtained in addition to the depth at which they were collected.

In the event of having to add water to the borehole to aid drilling, water shall be
bailed out from the borehole before sampling in order to ensure that the sample
collected is not contaminated by the drilling works.

 Precautions

For Undisturbed sampling: while cleaning the borehole, maximum care shall be taken to
ensure that the soil at the sampling depth is disturbed to a minimum.
For block samples precautions specified, as per clause 22.10 of BS 5930 section 3 shall be
taken.
For disturbed samples care should be taken to obtain a representative sample and avoid
contamination. While excavating in trial pits, a representative sample shall be obtained after
sampling from a heap.

 Pre-requisite
o Site
The borehole shall be drilled to specified depths.
o Equipment:
A PVC pipe, with suitable couplings of sufficient length.
Cement & Bentonite.
Mixing Drum for mixing Cement & bentonite.
Pump to inject grout through the PVC pipe.

 Backfilling excavation and boreholes (BS 5930 Cl 20.9)

Poorly-compacted backfill causes settlement at the ground surface and can act as a path for
groundwater. The latter effect can cause very serious inconvenience if the backfilled
excavations or boreholes are on the site of future deep excavations, tunnels or water-
retaining structures. For boreholes in dry ground, it may be possible to use compacted soil as
a backfill, although the procedure is often unsuccessful in preventing the flow of water. The
best procedure is to refill the borehole with a cement-based grout introduced at the lowest
point by means of a tremie pipe. Cement alone does not necessarily seal a borehole, on
account of shrinkage, and it is often preferable to use a cement and betonite grout, mixed with
no more water than is necessary to permit the grout to flow. The need and specification for
the grout is project dependent.
It is possible to compact the backfill of excavations by means of the excavator bucket or other
mechanical means. In special cases, weak concrete or specified granular fill may be
required.

3.9 TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY

 Survey Control and Geodetic Reference

The ground survey and mapping will be based on coordinates defined in the following geodetic
reference system.

Projection - DLTM
Grid zone - 40N
Spheroid - WGS 84
Plan Datum - WGS 84
Height Datum - Dubai Municipality Datum
Unit - Metric

 Survey Equipments

The following survey equipments will be used in the execution of the works:

Trimble S5 Total Stations

Trimble S8 Total stations
Trimble R10 Receiver

The Global Position System (GPS) – GPS receivers measure code and phase signals broadcast by
GPS satellites. The unknown element with phase observations is the integer ambiguity, or the
number of wave length between the receiver and the satellite. Once the integer ambiguity is known, a
position to the cm level can be determined.

GPS Positioning Technique Used:-Real-Time Kinematic (RTK)

In this method the base receiver is placed over a point of known coordinate .These co-ordinates are
entered into the receiver at the time of survey. The errors between the known position and the
computed position from the incoming satellite data is calculated and transmitted via radio link to the
roving receivers. The positions being recorded at the roving units are then corrected by the same
amount as the errors recorded at the base, thus giving a relative to the base position.

The concept works because the satellites are so high up that any errors measured by one receiver will
be almost exactly the same for any other receiver in the same location. Because of the simplicity of
the GPS signal, this single correction factor, in effect, takes care of all possible errors in the system.
Total Station surveys –This is identical to a theodolite survey, a total station is a theodolite and EDM
wrapped up into one instrument. The measurements (angle and distance) are made electronically,

and stored digitally. Survey measurements are carried out easier, faster and more accurately. Back in
the office, software processes the data and produces a plan automatically.

The standard deviation for the instrument as stated by the manufacturer is as follows:

Trimble R10 GPS Receivers 8 mm 1ppm

Trimble S5 Total stations 1 Seconds
Trimble S8 Total Stations 1 Seconds

 Description of Survey – (Methodology)

 Topographical Survey:

The objective of the survey is to produce a Topographic survey map for the survey area.Topographic
surveys determine the location and elevations of selected ground points in order to plot the features
as well as show the differences in elevations of the ground surface. A topographic survey requires
both horizontal and vertical control to reference the measurements of the selected features and
ground elevations that will be used to create the topographic map.

Topographic Surveying involves measurement of the Earth's surface to determine the three-
dimensional location of man-made and naturally occurring physical features for the purpose of Digital
Ground Modeling.

The Digital Ground Model can be defined as a mathematical representation of the earth's surface
upon which Planimetric Mapping, Geometrical Design, Analysis and Computation are based.

The procedure of the work will be as follows:

 Survey reconnaissance for the project area in order to understand the site condition and
locate the available survey control points near site.
 Establishing survey benchmarks at suitable locations to facilitate the survey using GPS
RTK and Total stations, especially adjacent to the buildings and trees where the usage of
GPS is limited due to the unavailability of adequate satellites and chances of multi path.
 Recording all features visible above ground using GPS and Total Stations.
 Processing of data and preparing the survey drawings.
 Physical verification of information on drawing at site.
 Submission of Drawings

3.10 UNDERGROUND UTILITY SURVEY

 Survey Control and Geodetic Reference

The ground survey and mapping will be based on coordinates defined in the following geodetic
reference system.

Projection - DLTM
Grid zone - 40N
Spheroid - WGS 84
Plan Datum - WGS 84
Height Datum - Dubai Municipality Datum
Unit - Metric

 Survey Equipments

The following survey equipments will be used in the execution of the works:

 Trimble 5800 dual frequency GPS Receivers

 C.Scope radio detection system

Radio-detection Technique

The radio-detection techniques are used to locate live electric cables. Using these systems, both
metallic and power carrying underground services can be quickly located and traced. The instrument
can be used in either active or passive mode.

Passive methods use the electro-magnetic fields already present around the underground utility.
These can originate either from a flowing electrical current or ambient ‘natural’ radio signals
concentrated within a conductor and re-radiated. In the case of passive mode operation, the
transmitter unit is not used. The receiver detects either the 50/60 Hz signal present in buried cables,
or the very low frequency radio energy radiated from buried lines. Also an audio signal is used to
indicate the intensity of the signal detected.

Active methods employ artificially generated signals from an external transmitter and can allow
different services to be individually identified. In addition, it is often possible to determine the depth
of the service in this mode. The transmitter can impart a signal to a service either by direct
connection or remote induction. Direct connection involves the application of an active signal to a
conductor using a clip, magnetic clamp, cable clamp or mains signal injector. Remote induction
involves a signal being radiated from the internal antenna of the transmitter where it is induced to

any conducting services in the vicinity and re-radiated and detected at surface. Generally 33KHz
frequencies are used for active methods for unambiguous signal detection. A secondary field will be
generated where the primary field passes through a subsurface conductor, such as buried cable.
These two vector fields will add to produce a resultant signal, which will differ in amplitude and
direction to that generated by the transmitter. The receiver coil emits an audio response indicating the
strength of the resultant field detected. The hand held receiver unit is carried across the survey area,
and the position of the maximum audio signal is noted. This will corresponds to the surface position
directly above the buried cable.

The C.Scope radio detection system utilizes electromagnetic signals to locate the approximate
position of buried services, up to a maximum depth of approximately 2m below the ground surface.

Utility Survey/Infrastructure Survey

The term utilities or services refer to communication, electrical, drainage and sewer, gas, fuel and
water lines many of which may occur above and/or below ground. Utility survey refers to identification
of the utilities at site and plotting it in the drawing. The utility drawings will show the manhole numbers
invert levels, pipe sizes, flow direction and details of each manholes in tabular format. Photographs
showing the condition inside the manholes will be attached with the tabular data.

 Following are the steps involved in the utility survey

1. Analyzing the database of manholes from topographic survey: The position of all manholes will be
extracted from the topographic survey map. All manholes will be numbered in the drawing as well
as at site.

2. Opening manholes and recording details: The covers of each manhole will be opened and the
position, direction, depth and flow direction will be identified.

3. Comparing NOC drawings the site survey: Information collected from the site will be compared
with the NOC drawings of utility providers to identify any discrepancies and will be cross checked
at site to identify any additional information available at site which is missing from the initial site
survey.

4. Preparation of Utility drawings

Note:-

The NOC drawings from all Utility providers shall be supplied by the client prior to the
commencement of the site works as the collection of the utility drawings are not included in
the project schedule

 Limitation of the Proposed Infrastructure Survey Methods

Physical inspection survey by lifting manhole covers

 The details of the manholes filled with water cannot be recorded.

 Any manholes falling with in the main roads cannot be opened as it will affect the traffic flow.
 In case of telecommunication cables, the size of cables cannot be identified.
