Community Health Nursing is one of the essential branches of nursing which aids the
community in health promotion, disease prevention and management of factors affecting health.
One of its vital aspect is Community Organizing Participatory Action Research (COPAR), in
which it aims to transmute the individualism, apatheism of the people into socially responsive
Barangay Upper Calarian located at the western part of Zamboanga City is known to be
one of the booming barangays in the city. Despite the fact, that this barangay is economically
growing there are still existing problems and misconceptions which can be solved through
interventions and teachings. The Western Mindanao State University College of Nursing felt the
need to extend their helping hand and make a difference in this community. The Level IV
students of Western Mindanao State University chose Purok 5, Upper Calarian as their target
area as part of their requirement in NCM 106 B. They started their COPAR on the said
community on November 8, 2017. Based on the student’s assessment using the community
health assessment tool. 25% out of 76 households were said to be hypertensive. Fire hazards
were also noticed during assessment such as congested houses which are also made out of light
materials. Faulty and octopus wirings were also noticed which is a threat and may possible start a
fire . They held series of activities and programs to identify the need and deficiency of the
community and acted upon it with the help of the College of Nursing in Western Mindanao State
University, Purok Leaders, Barangay officials and the local government with the hope that
through these interventions, the community’s need was catered and will be an avenue for the
Assessment
Assessment phase of COPAR happened for the first four weeks of it. Courtesy call was
conducted with the Community Health Nurse , Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Officials
and Purok leaders to establish rapport and build linkages. Ocular inspection within the
community and the target area was conducted followed by Community health assessment using

During the 5th and 6th week at the community, the researchers tallied the data gathered,
analysed it thoroughly and Prioritization of problems took place base on the data that were
gathered and collated. Formulation of program also took place during the planning phase in
which Bandura’s Learning Theory was utilized for the Program (Aksyon sa Altapresyon), another
Program that was conducted was about Fire Safety Awareness (Unahin Ang Kaligtasan Sunog
Ay Iwasan). Committees were built during this time with different task and responsibilities, the
group was divided into four namely committees on communication, food, graphics and physical
set ups. During the planning phase linkages were also build with other sectors of the community
and the society for assistance namely the Upper Calarian’s Purok 5 leaders, Barangay Officials,
Bureau of Fire Protection and the Western Mindanao State University. Letters were distributed to
Implementation of the program was conducted during the 7th week of COPAR specifically on
January 6, 2017 (Saturday) at Purok 5 Upper Calarian Zamboanga City. The program started at 1
pm with Hon. El King Omaga giving the Opening Remarks, followed by an hour long lecture
regarding Fire Prevention given by FO3 Ilyn Kinkito. On the other hand Associate Dean Ms.
Maria Aileen Fernando discussed about ways on how to deal with hypertension.
First aid kit was also presented as a project during the implementation phase as per request of the
Purok Leader for their community. After a successful program, the student nurses evaluated the
outcome of their program followed by termination of contract with the people in the community.
Evaluation
HBP Knowledge Test (HKT) was utilized to evaluate the outcome of program for Aksyon
utilized during the Pre-test and Post-test, in which the score will be evaluated by comparing the
scores for both test and will be interpreted whether as improved or did not improve.
For Fire Safety Awareness, a five-item-multiple choice questionnaire will be utilized for Pre and
Post-test and will be compared for both tests. Improve or did not improve will be used as
