TITLE: Statistics and Algorithms for Computational Biology

Pre-requisites:
Elements of Probability and Statistics, data preprocessing techniques, algorithms, complexity analysis.

Course objectives: The objectives of this course are to enable a student to:

1. Apply the concepts of probability and statistics to the problem being analyzed.
2. Select best machine learning approaches to solve the problem at hand.
3. Compare and critique the algorithms usable for solution
4. Appreciate and implement bioinspired approaches for solving problems.

Course outcomes: On the successful completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

1. Decide which statistical parameters to use for solution of problem at hand.


2. Develop/Design algorithm for full or partial solution of a problem.
3. Recommend an approach to solve a problem from data domain
4. Invent a new approach to problem solution
Statistics and Algorithms for Computational Biology
Unit 1: Probability 8 Hrs
o Probability: Random variables, Chi squared distributions, normal distribution, variance and
covariance of random variables.

Unit 2: Statistics 10 Hrs


o Statistics: t- distribution, f- distribution, hypothesis testing – significance level, t-test, t statistic,
p-value, Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER), False Discovery Rate (FDR), linear regression, correlation
coefficient.

Unit 3: Machine Learning 10 Hrs


o Feature Selection –Best -subset selection, filtering and feature extraction, SNR, max relevance,
model assessment - LOOCV, F-Score, k- Fold cross validation
o Classification – Linear Discriminant Analysis, ANOVA, Naïve Bayes, SVM
o Clustering – k-means, self-organizing maps, Principal component analysis

Unit 4: Advanced Algorithms for Computational Biology 12 Hrs


o Bio inspired algorithms for searching
o Shuffled frog leaping , levy flight
o particle swarm optimization
o cuckoo search
o Bee colony optimization
