Thank you for downloading our informative guide. Please be aware that although we aim to provide useful and accurate advice,
this is not legal guidance, and you should consult your own counsel for legal advice on carbon emissions legislation.

We are already seeing the effects of climate change. Temperatures are increasing, we are
experiencing more changeable weather patterns, and more extreme weather events. It is scientifically
proven that these changes are linked to the rising levels of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels for energy.

As responsible businesses we

In Canada, there are
two main schemes to
encourage businesses
to reduce carbon
emissions:
A carbon tax, and a cap

• Tax can be applied anywhere in the energy

forwards, except for at the end-user.
• The tax rate is set by the government, and is
usually ramped up gradually over time.
• Demand side management (DSM) is key to
reducing your tax burden.

How can I reduce my carbon emissions?

The answer to this question is simple. Steam in your plant is most likely produced by burning a fuel
of some kind, for example natural gas. The more energy efficient your plant, the less carbon dioxide
you emit to the atmosphere, hence the less hard-earnt profit you will lose to a carbon reduction
scheme. (In a cap and trade scheme, less CO2 may actually result in increased revenue from selling
your surplus credits!).

At Spirax Sarco we work tirelessly to help our customers improve their energy
efficiency and implement demand-side management (DSM).

1
Improve steam production efficiency
– ensuring your processes and
applications are tuned to supply the
necessary steam the moment it is
required, at the lowest possible cost.

2
Manage your energy – by ensuring your
steam is clean, dry and conditioned for
use in your processes. Where possible
returning energy, in the form of hot
condensate, to the boiler house to
improve efficiency.

3
Control your energy – carefully
controlling your steam so you have safe,
accurate and efficient delivery of energy
where it is demanded.

4
Visualise your consumption – accurate
metering allows you to gather hard
data to identify and drive necessary
improvements for investment, whilst
also quantifying payback.

5
Recover and transfer your
energy – the efficient recovery
and transfer of heat energy
from various processes and
applications helps you exploit
all available thermal saving
opportunities.
