Durrell Day

Record crowds visited Durrell wildlife park on Sunday 12 July 2009 to help celebrate half a century of conservation success.
Over 14,000 people enjoyed fun, games and special campaigns, saw how Durrell cares for endangered animals and
picnicked in the beautiful gardens.

Continuing from this success the Durrell Day festivities have now transformed into a weekend of activities to be held on 14 –

15 August. Opening from 10am until 6pm over the weekend, locals and tourists alike are welcome to join us for the reduced
entrance fee of £5 for adults and free for children under 16. Durrell members can enter for free.
This year we are focusing on our conservation effort across the world; both in the field and in Jersey. Throughout the wildlife
park there will be zones focusing on our top-spots and particular species; each with information points, talks from our
keepers and interactive games. We will also have a fundraising zone, where you can find out what you can do to help Durrell
and get involved, from sending us your old mobile phone to walking the Great Wall of China. If that‟s not enough we will have
the family favourite den building, the Genuine Jersey Market and a showcase of what is new at Durrell.

Short-eared owl spotted at Grey Mare’s Tail

A group of visitors to the National Trust for Scotland‟s Grey Mare‟s Tail Nature Reserve near Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway
were treated to a spectacular sight last week. For participants on a guided walk were startled when a short-eared owl
appeared in front of them.
“The party had just neared Loch Skeen when the owl appeared out of the heather barely 10 metres away from them - giving
everyone a fantastic view of this magnificent moorland bird,” said ranger Richard Clarkson. “This may be the first sighting of a
short-eared owl at Grey Mare‟s Tail,” added Richard. “The reserve is the perfect habitat for them, and we‟re hoping that one
day we‟ll be lucky enough to host a breeding pair!” NTS: 2/8/10

Mouse housing built by generous tennis fans

The RSPB has been overwhelmed by the response to a plea for old tennis balls to be used as harvest mice homes at one of
its nature reserves. And among the potential mice shelters being sent in from all over the UK, the wildlife charity has
received a box of six balls that were used at Wimbledon in 1982. Staff and volunteers at RSPB Fairburn Ings nature reserve
near Castleford were amazed to receive hundreds of tennis balls from as far south as Suffolk and as far north as Scotland.
And the balls from the world famous tennis championships, won by Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova that year,
caused extra excitement.
The tennis balls will be turned into luxurious harvest mouse homes on sticks in the reed beds at Fairburn, creating small
entrance holes and stuffing them with hay for comfort. Finally, each one will have some bird seed sprinkled inside for that
extra welcoming touch. Tennis ball homes are a tried and tested method of helping the tiny mammals, which have declined
in the last thirty years.
Farming practises over the last century are believed to be one of the causes and it is hoped that the alternative tennis ball
accommodation could help numbers increase. Laura Bentley, from RSPB Fairburn Ings, says: “We want to say a huge thank
you to all the people who sent in balls from near and far, we had no idea we would get so many. And it will be interesting to
see which lucky mouse takes up residence in the famous Wimbledon balls.”
Staff will find out after the summer if the donated balls that have been turned into mouse homes on the reserve have been
used by the new tenants. Laura says: “We can‟t wait to discover if the experiment has been successful at the end of the
breeding season and really hope it will attract more mice to the reserve. “It would be wonderful to know that we have created
a habitat suitable for them and shelters where they feel safe to raise their young and they would be a great addition to all the
beautiful wildlife at Fairburn Ings.” RSPB 3/8/10
