Guidelines for Hand Drawings

1. Drawing format - 8.5 x 11 paper, use plain, grid or green engineering paper
2. All lettering is capitalized and .125 to .187 high. Use guidelines.
3. Use decimals minimum two places no fractions.
4. Do not show the inch or cm symbol.
5. All drawings shall be in inches unless otherwise specified.
6. Do not place dimensions within the part outline or on the part surfaces.
7. All dimensions shall be in the same reading direction.
8. Use a straight edge and a circle template.
9. Space dimensions equally apart starting with the smallest dimension then next and so on.
Largest dimension for a feature is furthest away.
10. Locate views properly. Front view, top view above it, and the right side off the front view. Views
line up such the top view is directly above the front view.
11. Be neat and printing legible so it can be read.
12. Line work for the part outline is dark and thick lines while the extension and dimension lines are
thin.
13. Dimension a feature only once in the view the best describes it shape.
14. One part per page or drawing.
15. Extension lines go the the part edge being dimensioned with a small gap between the part line
and start of the extension line.
16. Arrow heads on a dimension line between two features face outward and not inward.
17. Dimensions circles as diameters (use the symbol) and not a radius.
18. Verify all features have been dimensioned.
19. Have somebody else look at your drawing for completeness.
