Geared for

POWER GENERATION
a world leader
As pressure on the earth s resources grows,
efficient and economic power generation is
an absolute necessity.
Power generation applications rely on innovative engineering technology to
ensure maximum output with minimum costs.

Allen Gears is recognised as the world-leading manufacturer of high performance epicyclic and

parallel shaft gearboxes for power generation and prides itself in providing its customers with

the most innovative, appropriate and cost-effective response; delivering the right solutions and

service support to suit specific business requirements and expectations.

Our latest range of epicyclic gearbox options provide greater mechanical efficiency, reduced power
loss and substantial cost savings. 3,000 gearbox installations confirm our position as market leader
in the 3 - 25 MW power range; a position we have achieved by optimising designs for both series
and one-off productions which provide a number of advantages in gas turbine applications.

The latest generation of compound star epicyclic gearboxes - developed directly from proven
technology - offer the ultimate in compact gear design, particularly suitable for high-ratio installations.

The wide range of power and speed combinations of our gearboxes ensures that for innovative
gearbox design and manufacture, Allen Gears sets the standard.
The benefit of the free-standing gearbox lies in its simplicity and
ability to accommodate a wide variety of user preferences.
The inherent flexibility of the design makes it easy to
accommodate power take-offs (PTOs) and power take-ins
(PTIs) simplifying the skid layout.

¥ universal application - suitable for both aero

deri ved and industrial engines

¥ simplified interfacing

¥ clear access to turbine and generator

¥ option for low speed flexible quill shaft coupling

¥ suitable for use with single bearing generators.

Free-standing gearboxes can incorporate up

to five auxiliary drives for pumps, starters
and barring systems.

and lubricating pump.
Allen Gears is one of the few manufacturers to offer the ultimate
in compact, security assured designs - the engine-mounted
gearbox. In this integrated design, the turbine and gearbox
casings are directly connected, significantly reducing package
length and cost. The arrangement also makes the best use of
the integral high speed coupling which is provided as standard
with all Allen Gears epicyclic gearboxes.

Among the key benefits of this solution is an assured

alignment between the turbine and gearbox, ensuring
accurate re-assembly following overhauls and refits.

¥ eliminates turbine/gearbox misalignment

¥ reduces skid length

¥ allows acceptance testing of turbine/gearbox

assembly

assembled gear cluster for minimum length.
Auxiliary drives for twin starters and an oil
pump are also provided.

50Hz and 60Hz applications.
Allen Gears’ generator-mounted gearbox represents the
optimum cost and space solution for hot end drive (HED)
turbine packages.Today, with over 250 units installed and power
ratings approaching 20 MW, Allen Gears is well positioned to
ensure the success of generator-mounted package designs.

The generator-mounted gearbox contains fewer components,

which reduces cost. It also allows the turbine OEM/packager
to take delivery of a fully assembled and tested generator
and gearbox.

¥ minimum weight - import ant for mobile

or offshore installations

¥ reduces skid length - no low speed flexible

Allen Gears has permanent test rigs

simulating a range of generator end shield
designs which enable these gearboxes to
be fully tested prior to installation.

In supplying the most appropriate gearbox solution for all
its customers, Allen Gears manufactures high specification
parallel shaft gearboxes for applications up to 45 MW.
Particularly suited to high power, low ratio packages, the
advantages of multipurpose parallel shaft gearboxes include:

¥ vertical or horizontal offset

¥ design simplicity and access for instrumentation

¥ widely understood technology - applicable to

AGMA/API specifications

¥ option for PTOs/PTIs, including starter

and barring systems

¥ option for common generator/gearbox oil

system

¥ option for high and low speed quill shafts.
