For many cultures around the world have viewed mental illness as a form of religious

punishment or demonic possession. In ancient Egyptian, Indian, Greek, and Roman writings,
mental illness was categorized as a religious or personal problem. However, what is really the
meaning of Mental Illness? According to Mayo Clinic, Mental illness refers to a wide range of
mental health conditions, disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. For instance,
these include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive
behaviors.

During the Middle Ages, the mentally ill were believed to be possessed or in need of religion.
Negative attitudes towards mental illness persisted into the 18th century in Western Countries,
leading to stigmatization of mental illness, and unhygienic confinement of mentally ill
individuals. In this case, the organization believe that this stigma prevent mental ill people to
overcome their own stress and depressions because of society's pressure. Likewise, the heart of
the advocacy is to develop Mental Health Awareness among students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod
ng Maynila through Illuminate : Shine Bright in the Darkness.

Nowadays, there is a high possibility to experienced mental illness, one reason of this is the
presence of social media especially to teenagers who are always expose to gadgets and social
networking sites. Lack of knowledge of students about Mental Illness may be the cause of
ignorance to their mental condition. Not all people are aware of mental illness and why is it
important to issue this type of illness. Decades have past but the stigma on mental illness is still
there. So this is very important to know what is Mental Illness, symptoms and its preventions
and causes.

A person who is suffering from any mental illness can vary, depending on the disorder,
circumstances and other factors. Mental illness symptoms can affect emotions, thoughts and
behaviors. There's no sure way to prevent mental illness but taking steps to control stress, to
increase resilience and to boost low self-esteem may help keep a person's symptoms under
control.

Thus, level of awareness is significant to stop the stigma about Mental Illness. A lot of people
have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental
illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect person's ability to
function.
