Two years ago I discovered my passion

for fashion. First of all, if I wanted to
start learning, I had to inform myself
and what better way to do that than
reading.
I went to buy my first fashion magazine
with enthusiasm. From that moment, in
which I read and learned about fashion,
I started to collect my first magazines. I
realized that what I liked the most about
fashion, besides clothes, was magazines
and I was interested in the whole
process involved in making one.
From that moment, I had the illusion of
one day being able to create my own
magazine or work in one.
This project is for me the opportunity to
materialize that illusion. At the same
time, it is the best way to know the
work and challenges of a magazine’s
creation.
In this magazine I wanted to focus on
some of the different fashion cultures
around the world, one of the most
important topics in fashion.
Knowing the world through fashion is
the best way to know different cultures.
It is so important to know the different
fashions of the world, not only of your
country.
If you are willing, open to know the
fashion cultures and learn, this
magazine is the magazine you are
looking for.

They can wear the kaffiyeh, which is a
handkerchief on the head that is
sometimes up held with a small crown.
The thawb, also known as thobe or
suriyah , is a long tunic that goes up the
ankles.
Muslim fashion has recently tried to be
more international to show that it is also a
part of the world’s fashion. Known
clothing brands such as Dolce&Gabbana
and H&M, have done their best but they
have never managed to get Muslim
people to accept it, especially Muslim
men. An attempt has been made to use a
Muslim model to wear the hijab in a

among woman girls. It is a fashion that
consists mainly of short board skirts,
babydoll t-shirts and high socks. There is
a style that is very similar, but it can not
be confused with Lolita. It is called Kogal
which is based on a high school uniform,
with a shorter skirt, loose socks, often
with dyed hair and a scarf. This style was
prominent in the 1990s, but has since
become less popular. The style Lolita has
come to influence in other parts of the
world such as Europe and America.
Another style of Japanese fashion is the
Costume Play. This fashion consists of
wearing costumes from your favorite
comics, video games or movies.
The Kawaii style is also well known in
Japan. It is characterized as the
sweetest or tender. This
style is characterized by
carrying prints of
cartoon characters such
as animals, stuffed
animals or dolls.
Gyaru is a type of
Japanese street fashion
that originated in the
1970s. Gyaru focuses on
girly-glam style,
dwelling on man-made
beauty (wigs, fake
lashes, fake nails etc).

How is Japan different from other fashions?

Japan is very different regarding fashion.
It comes from the fact that, after the WW2,
Japan finally opened its door to the world
because they had no choice. A lot of western-
style were imported to the country and people
copied this
style. But as a corporate-style society,
everyone had to “calm down” and wear the
same clothing in 80-90’s to give a perfect
image of Japan and its population.
That’s why in 2000, lots of young people
decided to cut from this corporate way of dress
and decided to have “excessively opposite”
looks (you can see them in the Wikipedia link).
But nowadays, it changed because people can’t
go to work dressed in 12 colors on their hair
and a huge makeup.
So people know are trying to associate this
vision of “I wear what I want” and “I have to
work for the good of my country”, this lead to
plenty of sub-styles in Japanese fashion that I
can’t explain
here otherwise you will have about 30 pages to
read. But the Gyaru and Neo-Gyaru style is a
good example to understand that.
Is it true that Japanese fashion is more
advanced than other countries? Or more
striking?
Yes it’s true. Japanese fashion is “avant-garde”,
they always bring a new vision of fashion.
That’s why Japanese trends arrive 1-2 years after
here in our shops in Europe and America.
If you want to be aware of fashion, just watch
Japanese designers’ runway shows, and you’ll
see few times later, everyone will wear it but
without knowing where it is from.

Do people let themselves be
influenced by other fashions, or do
they have their own style?
People have their own fashion but
some of them become Gurus of a
specific style. Most of time, these
people are from social networks and
gain attention from public and then
are considered as “Must follow”.
There is a 80’-90’s trend lead by
Peco&Ryuchell which are a simple
couple who loves American old-
fashioned style. A lot of people in
Harajuku saw them in the streets and
know they have their own brand,
shops, etc.… at only 21-22 years old.
What is the Japanese protocol
for weddings, work ...?
You can both have a traditional
wedding but more and more
couple wants to have a western-

wedding as well (white dresses,
church, etc.…)
For work, 90% of companies are

Absolutely! I think the world
doesn’t know but each pieces of
clothes sold in shops like H&M,
Zara, Forever 21 and others is
there because it emerged in Japan
before.
For example, wearing a camisole
looking like a night dress on top of
a simple shirt (which is
everywhere right now) was the
trend in Japan 2 years ago.

everybody, just check Japanese

Is there a difference
between Chinese
fashion and Japan?
I would say yes
simply because
China and Japan are
two different
countries and doesn’t
share the same
history regarding
fashion. But there is
an “Asian trend” as
well shared by
South-Korea too.

Everything is essential, but I would
say that the appearance in Japan is
the most important for them
(clothing, makeup, hair). Japanese
spend a lot of money in beauty
product, beauty clinics (men as
well)

 INDIA
Indian fashion has evolved a lot. The
traditional clothes formerly known as
the saris, dhotis or ghagra cholis were
the norm.
The explosion of fashion that appeared
in the movies made Indian women begin
to take risks
.

There was a big change within the Indian

fashion industry. The Indian designers
started a new vision of fashion that is now
known all around the world. Garments
considered western and modern were
designed and replaced by traditional
clothing. They introduced the clothes of
Mongolian courtesans in fashion,
reinvented popular dance costumes and
even created great trends such as ethnic
elegance.

For men, the typical costumes are the Jodhpuri, the Angrakha and the Sherwani. The three
suits are long and include trousers and a jacket or a shirt in the kaftan style.
The level of elegance that can be shown according to the occasion, is recognized by the
quality of the fabric, colors and embroidery.

In the early 1990s,

the government of
India created the
National Institute of
Fashion Technology
in Delhi (NIFTD),
which played a
decisive role for new
designers in later
years. In addition,
the economic liberation of the country after
achieving its independence, made the most
austere fashion towards sequins, gold threads
and ornate embroidery. Applying all this in
skirts, dresses and trousers, allowed the Indian
fashion to show the tradition of its culture in
clothes usually considered modern and Western.
They also incorporated corsets, satin and lace
blouses that began to replace the traditional
choli and sari. This is how the Indian fashion
began to evolve and it has not stopped yet.

 AMERICA
New York is the main fashion city
in the United States.
It is considered the most important city in the
New York Fashion Week event (NYFW) . It is a
semi annual event where all the trends of the
year and season are shown, with the most
important designers. NYFW
was the first event celebrated
in the world, in 1943 and was
created to attract the attention
of the designers who were
focused on the French
fashion.
The success of this show
helped to increase the number
ofAmerican designers,
making that the New York
fashion become today, one of
the most followed and
influential fashions.

The New York fashion can be defined in two words: elegant

and casual.
It focuses a lot on comfort, but always adding accessories that makes the perfect look. The
mix of brown, black and white tones are essential.
In case of doubt, black is always the best option and for that reason, New York is
considered an elegant city.
To complement the look, they usually choose minimalist accessories. A simple necklace
or a bunch of small rings, are the most appreciated accessories.

EUROPE
Europe has two emblematic fashion
capitals: Paris and Milan.
Feel comfortable, be yourself and not be
PARIS influenced. Thus are the three items that
resume the fashion of Paris.

event and decided to organize the first
Italian fashion show in 1951. He invited
important buyers and journalists to attend
after the catwalk. It was very successful
and over the years, Milan became one of
the main fashion capitals.
Elegance, simplicity, basic colours and
denim are the principal characteristics of
fashion in Italy.
Trench coats are the ideal piece of clothing
for rainy and
winter days.
Skirts and
dresses are

must-have
in an Italian closet.
The accessories are the
part where you can
define your style.
Shoes, scarves and
sunglasses are the most
important complements
in the look.
The trend of Milan is to
always use sunglasses,
even if there is no sun. It gives a mysterious and
romantic style, and the elegant touch that Milan
fashion has.

magazine that represents USA and Europe.
Hello Ms.de Gray. Thank you so much for Eleonora de Gray, editor-in-chief
accepting my interview. of Runway Magazine.
How would you define USA fashion?
There's no specific definition for fashion in USA. There are many designers from
many countries who made fashion in USA very rich. Designers mix and match
pop American culture, original styles and traditions from the country of their
origins. Designers in New York present
mostly Urban style. Designers from Los
Angeles present mostly spectacular and
theatrical costumes.
Are there different styles of USA fashion?
There are many styles.
Do people let themselves be influenced by
other fashions, or do they have their own
style?
There's no other fashion. Designers
influenced always by classic fashion, art
(specially pop-art), by cinema, comic books
(Manga influenced many fashion
designers), by theater, by tradition from the
country of their origin.
What is the most important fashion
week: USA, Milan or Paris?
Most important - creativity.
Accessory/clothes, essential of USA?
There's no particular style, where you can
say "this is american fashion". Riches of
USA fashion is mix of great cultures,
modern and traditional, taken from different
countries.

There's no specific definition for fashion in
Europe. Although designers from every
European country keep tradition of the
country, and create their pieces adapted for

AFRICA
Africa has a huge cultural
diversity because they
follow different religions
and traditions.
In Nigeria, brides wear cheerful
and colourful clothes for their
wedding day. They wear a
typical accessory; an ornament
on the head called Gele.

In Ghana, the bride loves to wear

multiple colours in her dresses.
Each dress is different because it
colour pattern always has to match the groom's suit.

JAPAN
The importance of
colours.
Japanese brides wear a
white kimono that means
purity and virginity.
After the ceremony, the
bride wears a red kimono
to attract good luck.

Weddings in India are particularly
extravagant.
Brides wear red or pink dresses with gold prints.
After the wedding, women who live in the north
of India and are already married, are distinguished
by using a red dot in the middle of their forehead.

USA & EUROPE

In general, weddings in the
USA and Europe are the
same.
The brides wear a white long dress
and men wear suits.
There are some exceptions in
different countries of these two
continents like in Scotland.
In this country, men wear the
famous skirt called Kilt, with red
prints, green paintings and white
stripes. Brides wear a white dress,
but after the ceremony, they wear a
handkerchief with the same colours
as her husband’s skirt to show that
now she belongs to his family.
