Problem Set 1
2.1 Structural steel beams are to be placed 12 ft on-center under a reinforced concrete floor slab. If
they are to support a dead working load D = 100 psf of floor area and a live working load L = 60 psf of
floor area, determine the factored uniform load per foot that each beam must support.
Solution:
2.3 A column is to support the following service or working loads: D = 100 k axial compression dead
load, L = 40 k floor axial compression live load, and W = 50 k axial compression or 40 k tension wind load.
Compute the required design strength of the member.
Solution:
Answer: 220 k
2.5 The estimated service or working axial loads and bending moments for a beam-column are as
follows: D = 110 k, L = 30 k, MD = 20 ft-k, and ML = 12 ft-k. Compute the axial load and moment values
that must be used in design.
Solution:
Axial Load
Moment:
2.7 The working or service loads have been determined for a particular building column as required
by the applicable building code with the following results: D = 300 k, L = 200 k, L r or S or R from roof = 40
k, W = 150 k compression or 130 k tension, and E = 60 k compression or 75 k tension. Determine the
critical factored design load for the column.
Solution:
Answer: 720 k
