God’s Patient Call : This painting of Jonah in the Sistine Chapel is directly
above The Last Judgment. Michelangelo chooses to depict Jonah for his
theological connection to Jesus, who said, “Just as Jonah was in the belly of
the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of
the earth three days and three nights” (Matthew 18:40).
Unlike Jesus, Jonah initially balks at
God’s call until he grudgingly accepts
and preaches to the city of Nineveh. In
his rebellion, he gets in a boat and goes
the opposite direction from where God
was calling. Eventually he was thrown
overboard and swallowed by the fish,
seen painted at his side. After a three-
night stomachache, the fish spewed
Jonah up on the shore, back where he
had started.
Jonah looks up to heaven with a weary
longing, which might denote his
melancholy personality. The fig tree
further reinforces his weakness
because it recalls the episode when
Jonah lay under the fig tree in depression and lethargy.
Like Peter and Andrew, James and John, God entered Jonah’s life and called
him. Unlike the apostles, it took him a while to say yes. We can also be slow to
respond to the invitation of God in our soul, whether in big or small things.
Perhaps the attraction of the world or fear of sacrifice keeps us from saying
yes. Yet his voice is constant and persistent.
Michelangelo paints Jonah dangling above The Last Judgment as if to subtly
say, you are cordially invited to say yes to God’s patient callings…while you still

TAMIL MASS

Registration is now open for registration for catechism in the church. The
catechetical session will be held every Sunday from 2pm to 3.30pm and will
start the week after Chinese New Year. Registration form is available in the
Parish Secretariat office. The closing date of registration is 28 Jan 18.
Recruitment of Catechists : The Parish is recruiting catechists to run the
new Primary 1 catechetical session. Application forms are available in the
Parish Secretariat Office. The catechists from Church of The Risen Christ will
be sharing at Sunday, 21 Jan 18 at the 9.45am and 11.30am mass and answer
any enquiries. Training will be conducted by Office for Catechesis (OFC) for
new catechists at Church of The Risen Christ on the following dates/times:

2nd Collection at Masses for GIFT – “St Francis Xavier Seminary”
This weekend, there is a second collection for the Catholic
Foundation’s GIFT (Giving in Faith & Thankfulness) campaign.
Collections this month will specially benefit the St Francis
Xavier Seminary (SFX) building project. This building is
expected to complete in the second half of 2018 at a projected
cost of $19m. Flyers on the SFX Seminary will also be distributed after mass.

Ramping Up ACCESSIBILITY to our Church
On Epiphany Sunday a fortnight ago, we reported of a new
ramp outside our Church Exit (HDB carpark). We are happy to
announce the construction of two new ramps within the
church compound: one outside the Parish Office and the other,
near the Adoration Room. In the meantime, do bear with us for
the inconvenience, noise and dust while works are in progress.
We hope these new ramps will improve the
accessibility of facilities within the church
compound among our elderly and wheelchair-
bound parishioners and visitors. Let’s offer
them a gentle push and a welcoming path here
at Christ the King!

Memorial of St Vincent, Deacon & Martyr
22 Born at Huesca, Spain, he
Jan became a deacon and
served St. Valerius
at Saragossa until their martyrdom
at Valencia during the persecutions
under Emperor Diocletian (r.284-
305). St. Valerius was exiled, but Vincent
was cruelly tortured because he would
not surrender the holy books. He
converted the warden of the prison and then died. He is
considered the patron saint of vinedressers in some regions
of Spain.
Memorial of St Francis de Sales, Bishop &

Jan Bishop of Geneva at the
time of Calvin, he strove for
the renewal of the faith. He was St. Jane
de Chantal's spiritual director, and with
her founded the Order of the Visitation.
Most widely known is the
saint's “Introduction to the Devout Life”,
which, with the “Imitation of Christ” (by
Thomas Kempis), is rightly considered the finest outline of
Christian perfection. Francis' Introduction proves to the
world that true piety makes persons amiable, lovable and
happy. St. Francis died at Lyons in 1622, at the age of 55. His
legacy also lived on in another religious order - The Salesian
Society, founded by Saint John Bosco in 1859.

Feast of the Conversion of St Paul the
25 Apostle
Jan This celebration is the
only observance of the
conversion of a saint found in our
liturgical calendar. Saint Paul is the
most dynamic of Christ’s Apostles,
even though he was not one of the
original twelve. His name was Saul,
changed to Paul after his dramatic
conversion. He was traveling on the
road to Damascus (on an anti-Christian mission, as the leader
among the fanatical Pharisees) when he was thrown to the
ground and blinded by a dazzling light. Christ appeared to
him in a voice, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
(Acts 9:4) Saul’s blindness went away only after Ananias
came to baptise him. St Paul subsequently became God’s
principal instruments in the conversion of the world.
“We were indeed buried with him through baptism into
death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.”
(Romans 6:4)
Memorial of Saints Timothy & Titus,
26 Bishops
Jan Both were disciples
and co-workers of
Saint Paul. Timothy
accompanied Paul on his travels,
and were even in prison together.
Their relationship was notable
close and affectionate. Paul
speaks of his young protégé as “a dear and faithful son” (I
Corinthians 4:17). Timothy was put in charge of the Church in
Ephesus. Timothy is a patron saint of stomach disorders.
Titus, a Greek was converted to Christianity by Paul. Since
Titus was a Gentile, Paul and Barnabas took him with them
to Jerusalem to oppose the Jewish contention, that to
become a Christian, a prospective convert must be
circumcised (Galatians 2:3-5). Titus was Paul’s messenger to
various Christian communities where disputes arose, and he
was in charge of the Church in Crete. Titus is the patron saint
of Crete. Do you know of a famous icon that originated from
Crete that attracts a huge devotion here in Singapore? Clue –
We have a replica of it here in Christ the King.
