T
he Stryker started development in 2000 by
General Dynamic Land Systems and is the
Army’s first Infantry Fighting Vehicle developed
since the M2/M3 Bradley from the 1980s. It
derives its name from two different Medal of Honor
recipients who died in combat; Spc. 4 Robert F.
Stryker (Vietnam) and Pfc Stuart S. Stryker (WWII).
These men were not related. To me the Stryker
is really an ugly vehicle and I never gave much
thought to building a model of one. Not until I
started seeing pictures of the vehicles in OIF with
slat armour, camouflage netting and all kinds of
stowage did it start to pique my interest. Several of
the images reminded of ancient 'war elephants' that
were used in combat. My love of modelling AFV
interiors and working with photo-etch brought me to
this new project. I knew this would be the biggest
project I'd ever taken on and it would require a
lot of time and organization, however I was very
eager to start the task. I choose to build the M1126
version which is the basic infantry carrier version,
and I quickly started rounding up all the different
aftermarket kits and accessories that would be
needed for the final product.

A view of the Black Dog driver’s compartment in its bare resin Crew mostly finished, the author had to constantly check the clearance Note the wiring in the front section, the author added two LED lights one

details when everything was buttoned up

INTERIOR
I added a full interior from Black Dog that was nice
in detail, but had its challenges in fitting in place.
The hull floor is on large resin chunk and it was
slightly warped. I decided to cut it to get proper
fitment. I added wiring, tubes and straps to the
interior to make the interior complete. With all the
effort and detail that was going into the interior of
this model I wanted to make sure that is was still
possible to see everything once the two hull halves
were glued together. To achieve this I fitted two
LED lights inside. I tried to place them where you
Here you can see the LED in front of the driver’s compartment was taped off Primed and ready for wiring and hand painting of details
would not directly look at them from most angles to protect from paint
but still provide plenty of illumination. I found that
in front of the driver’s instrument cluster and next to
the commander’s station would be optimal areas
for this lighting. I wired the two LED lights together
in the empty area that would be the engine
compartment, and I drilled a hole in bottom of hull
to run the wires through for a battery that would be
placed under the base.

BASIC EXTERIOR
The kit's exterior parts went together quite well
and had good detail. I had to be careful to not
add everything to make way for the slat armour
addition. The vehicle was painted with mix of
Tamiya acrylics to get the right tone of green I was
looking for. I highlighted different panels on the
vehicle with a lightened colour of the base-coat
Once the base coat had some time to dry then
with Vallejo acrylics I brush painted the all the bolt
heads and raised details.
Lower hull is painted and
details are added. Note the
SLAT ARMOUR Igloo colour added for interest
Beside the interior, this was the bulk of my build.
The Griffon set was incredible, comprising fourteen
frets of photo-etched brass! Instead of cutting all
the bolts and details off the hull sides which was
required for the plate armour, I applied styrene
sheet to which the additional armour photo-etch
plates are mounted. After that I began to build the
individual sections of the slat armour. Starting on
one side I soldered all the individual slat armour
sections together; I like soldering for strength but
a lot of clean-up was needed. A lot of patience is

When I made the opposite side slat sections
I decided to glue them together instead of
soldering, so I did not have to clean up excess
solder. However when it came time to handle the
slat armour sections for mounting on the vehicle
many sections came apart. If I were to do it again
I would have soldered everything. The other real
challenge of the slat armour addition lied in the A view from the back of

Resin water bottles from DEF Model were used
with glow sticks added to them to simulate what
crews used for night recognition on the antennas.
To make the glow sticks I simply cut off the water

mix of Tamiya XF-4 Yellow Green and X-25 Clear
Green paint into the hole and then glued the cap
back on. Simple! I made sure the sticks were sitting
in the water bottle correctly depending on the
angle of the water bottle. I made the banana peel
from Apoxie Sculpt as well, and placed it in a spot
to suggest the crewman tried to throw it from the
vehicle but didn’t quite make it that far. The idea of
banana peel and water and pop bottles added to
the cluttered look I was going for.

CONCLUSION
From the onset I knew this was going to be a very
long and involved project. I worked on this model
for nearly two and half years, often having to set
it aside for sometimes a month at a time. This was
necessary to keep from getting overwhelmed from
all the detail that you see in the final product. I set
out to make as true a representation of Stryker that
was used in OIF. •

gradients, over the upper parts of the model. This step helped me to subtly blend all
of the different faded olive green tones. It also gave the faded white-green tones
seen at the extreme highlights a bit of colour. At this point I applied the markings

For the IS-4 project, you can see that I took an
opposite approach when applying the gradients
using colour modulation. As I said there are
different ways in which an individual can apply
this style onto a model If executed using a bit of imagination,
colour modulation can really give a
unique appearance to even the most
common modelling subjects

light tank served with many armies throughout
the world and it played a significant role in
Europe during the early part of the Cold War.
Belgium was one of the countries that used this tank
in its intended roll of light reconnaissance it was in
service with the Belgian army from 1958 to 1974.
So, the scope for modelling one of these vehicles
is quite broad, however very little reference is
available for this period in Belgium’s history. I finally
found some interesting pictures by searching for
regimental associations on the 'web. My Flemish and
French is non-existent but with the help of Google
translate I managed to amass a decent amount of
references and information. Very few changes need
to be made to the base kit so for the modeller it’s a
very easy and satisfying project to undertake.

THE KIT
I used the old Skybow kit for this build, which is a
superb model straight out of the box. You can still
pick up one of these kits very cheaply, however if
you can’t find one AFV Club took over the moulds
when Skybow disappeared from the scene and now
produce several variations based on this kit. The
kit I had also included a soft plastic mantlet cover,
which again AFV Club now offers as an accessory.

THE BUILD
Building the kit is very straightforward as all the
parts fit extremely well and have excellent detail
too. The only changes I made were really cosmetic
in nature. The barrel travel-lock was changed to
the closed position, which only took a minute or
two to sort out. A few nuts made from plastic-card
also went onto the fender edges and the tow-cable
ends were drilled out and a suitable piece of rope
added. On the turret, I added some spare photo-
etched tie-downs to the sides and made up the
fittings for the tool stowage, as I wanted to leave
the tools off as per my references.
The .50cal mount was also moved to a different
position as seen in the pictures. The soft plastic
mantlet cover went on very well using CA glue and
Tamiya extra thin cement. The effect of the fabric
is very well done. Some small seam lines were
cleaned up using Tamiya glue to lightly blend the
seams away. My only extravagance was to replace
the kit’s tracks with some Spade Ace white metal
tracks, which had much better detail. They also
helped achieve the tight 'live' look and each run
needed seventy-three links.

Extra detail was added to the fenders’ outer edges

I
’m not going into the history of this very well
known beast as there is plenty to read out there
on this very interesting and much admired AFV.
There are also plenty of Tiger I models out there,
in all scales; I guess they sell well! Not to be
outdone, we now have a model of an early Tiger
I in 1:35 from Zvezda. The instructions state that
this is an early production variant. On opening the
box and looking at the contents we are met with
several sprues in sand yellow plastic plus black,
synthetic-rubber tracks moulded in two parts. More
on these later. Also included is a set of decals for
one of two vehicles.

A CLOSER LOOK
Before I started on the build I took out all of the
parts to see what I thought of the quality of the
moulding and scale of the parts. I have to be
honest, I was a little disappointed. The sides of the
hull had some very bad sink marks and the tools
seemed over scale as did the hull roof top light
brackets. Not to be put off, I got all my Tiger spares
in from the stash. I had hoped to build the kit using
just the Zvezda parts and could have I suppose, but
in my mind would just not have looked right. It has
to sit in my cabinet once complete!

TO HULL AND BACK

The instructions start with the turret. Not for me to
conform, so I started on the hull. First of all, the
rear plate (C3) was attached and the rear hull
ends clamped together. Then the fixtures for the
side skirts were cut off and set aside, as I would
need them later. The sink marks were filled with
Squadron Green Putty. Once dry, the sides were
then sanded. I didn’t re-attach the skirt fixtures at
this point. Now I could get on with fitting the hull
bracing (C54) dry-fitting the hull roof. I wasn’t too
happy with the fit so I left the brace off. Next up
were the rear fans and fuel tanks; no issues there.
Now to the wheels and I quite liked the detail
here; I didn’t have any problems constructing and
attaching these to the vehicle.

sides meant that some extensive work
As stated earlier, the tracks come in two parts with model filler (green) was needed
for each side and I had a few reservations about
this method, but I needn’t have worried as they
went together fine. The guide horns were hollow
and the detail was pretty good. There was a little
flash on some of the horns but this was easily dealt
with, using a sharp blade. I tend to paint all of
my models with the tracks on, it’s just my way of
building and painting.
Stages 19, 20 and 21 guide you to add
the hatches, tow ropes, air filters and smoke
dischargers. I thinned the dischargers out and
added a few bolts where needed. The tow ropes
were replaced with ones made from copper wire
and replacement ends. Attachment bolts were also
added to the connectors for the air cleaners too. All
joint and sink marks were also filled and sanded
on these as well. I decided I would leave off the
air-ducting hoses as I thought they looked a little
under-scale. So, I hollowed out the engine duct
attachment and made some pipe fixtures from scrap
sprue and plastic card. Finally I checked all of the
hull and details. Once happy, it was put aside and
my attention was then turned to the turret.

TURRET TIME
Okay, now to the turret. The kit has a lot of internal
detail to add in here. A lot of this will not be seen,
unless you want to leave the turret roof unglued I The roadwheels carry an excellent level of detail
An expanding clamp was needed to

so onto Stages 6, 7 and 8. In Stage 7, part B66
looks to be a late periscope cover. I replaced this
with one made from plastic card, checking pictures
of early Tigers.
Once the turret roof had been fixed in place and
any gaps filled and sanded, I added detail to the
track holders and rear stowage bin. I managed to
lose part B67 (no doubt the carpet will give it up
one day). Stage 21 now instructs you to add the
turret roof hatches, which I did. They also offer a
choice of 'version 1 and 2'. I can only assume that
this means rear turret escape hatch open or closed.
Using a pyrogravure, I added weld seams that I
thought needed a bit of enhancement. That was
pretty much the build done and I had jumped about
between stages, mainly for ease of building. Each The standard kit tracks are well detailed; they

colour, applied to all of the links and any spares

PAINT YOUR WAGON; BUT WHICH SCHEME?

After looking at photos of several vehicles in
service, I decided I wanted to portray one that had
first been painted grey and then taken into service
sheds, had its rooftop periscope cover fitted, then
given a rough coat of sand yellow and green
camouflage. From my own military service, I know
how slap-dash AFV painting can be, so wanted
this vehicle to look worn as if its last coat had been
very poorly applied.
To start off I gave the edges and undersides
a layer of dark grey/brown mixed from Vallejo
acrylic paints applied with my airbrush. This was
to give the appearance of a pre-shade. Over this I
sprayed lighter greys, picking out areas that would
catch the light. All of the main colours were taken
from the Vallejo range, darkened and lightened
with panzer grey and flesh in various quantities.
The model was then put aside for about forty-
eight hours to dry. Once back on my painting table Detail was added to the bow machine gun mount PE brass engine-deck screens are an essential detail for most Tiger I
I then gave the Tiger several coats of hairspray, models. Note the replacement fire extinguisher too

letting it dry between each coat. After about half
an hour, I then sprayed the sand colour and green
camouflage. As soon as these colours had set, I
started to remove some of the top colour by wetting
certain areas with tap water and scrubbing using
an old paint brush. After a short while the top coat
will come away. This sometimes works well and
other times you may need to go over certain areas
with the paint again. I’ve read that the base coat
is better applied with enamels, but as yet I haven’t
tried this. I was now happy with the results and the
excess paint flakes were now all washed off. Again
the model was put aside to dry.
Detail painting of the tools and other on vehicle
equipment was now tackled. The 'wood' parts of
the tool handles were first given a coat of acrylic
sand and over this, a coat of un-thinned brown
oil paint layered on. A soft, clean brush was then
used to rub off the oil paint, creating a worn look.
'Metal' areas were first painted with a mixture of
black and brown acrylic, then the metal area was
drybrushed in a steel enamel colour.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well, she looks like a Tiger I. It’s such a shame that
Zvezda didn’t pay more attention to areas such
as the tools and lights. It appears that it may have
had different designers for different areas. I’m not
aware if the turret shape is right or wrong, with
regards to being asymmetrical, but it looks okay to
me. I don’t know what market they are aiming at,
but if you save your pennies, you could probably
buy a better model with fewer sink marks etc. It's a
shame as I was looking forward to building this; I'll
give this kit six out of ten. •

BOOK REVIEWS
JAGDPANZER 38 IN FOCUS 1 (MEN AND MACHINES OF WORLD WAR 2)
LEE ARCHER, PANZERWRECKS
From good bookshops and; www.adhbooks.com
ISBN; 978-1-908032-13-3

The Jagdpanzer 38(t), commonly known as the Hetzer, has been an

evergreen modelling subject for many years and there are some excellent
kits of the vehicle in its various forms currently on sale. Of the many books
that have been produced on the vehicle, this new volume by Lee Archer is
perhaps the most modeller-friendly as it presents superb quality, wartime
photographs of the diminutive tank-killer in great depth, printed large and
sharp on high-grade paper, many across the whole page. This allows the
images to yield their detail for the modeller to examine and there’s a lot
to see here. Some of the pictures are begging to be re-created in diorama
form, in particular the overhead views on pages sixty-two and sixty-three
of a vehicle freshly commandeered by Czech freedom-fighters (below left).
As well as the storage boxes and jerrycan, we can also observe gas mask
holders, a tarpaulin, helmets and even what appears to be a walking-stick
stowed on the hull sides! It’s a real-life modelling cliché and an image that
will hopefully have you reaching for a kit. Highly recommended. MN

The US Abrams MBT is receiving a lot of attention

lately with no less than three new kits of it (Meng, Rye
Field, Academy) on sale. It’s an extremely handsome
machine that has been reworked numerous times since its
development in the 1970s and it served with distinction
in Europe throughout the 1980s, in the Gulf Wars,
Afghanistan and elsewhere. References haven’t been
abundant though, until now, with this new volume from
Sabot Publications from the USA on the M1A2 SEP (System
Enhancement Package). Within the 104 pages (including
covers) we are treated to a remarkable photo-story on the
tank, starting with a section showing it in action, with and
without TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit), CROWS (Common
Remotely Operated Weapons Station) turret and manifold
other upgrades and changes. It’s a lot to learn but the book
does a good job of highlighting the various differences which
can only be a help to the modeller. Following the first chapter,
we have a thorough walk-around section that shows several
tanks in close up; everything from the tracks to the turret
interior are shown, the latter being very useful for Rye Field’s
new kit with interior detail. An excellent production with high
quality images and informative captions. MN

HOLGER ERDMANN, MARTIN BLOCK, NUTS & BOLTS
www.historexagents.com
ISBN; 978-965-7700-01-3

As with the Jagdpanzer 38(t), the WW2

German ‘acht-rad’ armoured car is a modelling
favourite that has been kitted many times
in differing versions. As a reference source,
this second volume on the Sd.Kfz.233 schw.
Pz.Spähwagen 7.5cm, Pz.Fu.Wg Sd.Kfz.263 and
the odd-looking Panzermesskraftwagen is going to
be hard – if not impossible – to beat. As with all the
recent Nuts and Bolts editions, the depth of detail is
staggering, with heaps of wartime photos (over 130
pages) plus scale drawings (in 1:35), excellent colour
artwork, ‘walk-around’ photos and a modelling chapter
showing Tony Greenland and Vinnie Brannigan’s models
in detail. Another unmissable from the N&B guys, add to
your modelling library in confidence. MN

of virtually every aspect of
the vehicle’s exterior structures
including the all-important
hydraulic gear that operates the

extremely useful shots of the driver’s
compartment are provided and we
get to see the machine in action too,
being trialled in the USA in a field of
extremely viscous red clay; it appears
to be coping well with the conditions!
A very well thought-out production and
perfect for modellers. MN
