Nathan LaPorte takes on the mammoth task
of adding anti-RPG 'birdcage' bar-armour
to AFV Club's 1:35 M1126 Stryker
AFV Edition 23
A view of the Black Dog driver’s compartment in its bare resin Crew mostly finished, the author had to constantly check the clearance Note the wiring in the front section, the author added two LED lights one
between upper and lower hulls for proper fitment in front of driver and one in commander’s area to help show off interior
details when everything was buttoned up
INTERIOR
I added a full interior from Black Dog that was nice
in detail, but had its challenges in fitting in place.
The hull floor is on large resin chunk and it was
slightly warped. I decided to cut it to get proper
fitment. I added wiring, tubes and straps to the
interior to make the interior complete. With all the
effort and detail that was going into the interior of
this model I wanted to make sure that is was still
possible to see everything once the two hull halves
were glued together. To achieve this I fitted two
LED lights inside. I tried to place them where you
Here you can see the LED in front of the driver’s compartment was taped off Primed and ready for wiring and hand painting of details
would not directly look at them from most angles to protect from paint
but still provide plenty of illumination. I found that
in front of the driver’s instrument cluster and next to
the commander’s station would be optimal areas
for this lighting. I wired the two LED lights together
in the empty area that would be the engine
compartment, and I drilled a hole in bottom of hull
to run the wires through for a battery that would be
placed under the base.
BASIC EXTERIOR
The kit's exterior parts went together quite well
and had good detail. I had to be careful to not
add everything to make way for the slat armour
addition. The vehicle was painted with mix of
Tamiya acrylics to get the right tone of green I was
looking for. I highlighted different panels on the
vehicle with a lightened colour of the base-coat
Once the base coat had some time to dry then
with Vallejo acrylics I brush painted the all the bolt
heads and raised details.
Lower hull is painted and
details are added. Note the
SLAT ARMOUR Igloo colour added for interest
Beside the interior, this was the bulk of my build.
The Griffon set was incredible, comprising fourteen
frets of photo-etched brass! Instead of cutting all
the bolts and details off the hull sides which was
required for the plate armour, I applied styrene
sheet to which the additional armour photo-etch
plates are mounted. After that I began to build the
individual sections of the slat armour. Starting on
one side I soldered all the individual slat armour
sections together; I like soldering for strength but
a lot of clean-up was needed. A lot of patience is

When I made the opposite side slat sections
I decided to glue them together instead of
soldering, so I did not have to clean up excess
solder. However when it came time to handle the
slat armour sections for mounting on the vehicle
many sections came apart. If I were to do it again
I would have soldered everything. The other real
challenge of the slat armour addition lied in the A view from the back of

Resin water bottles from DEF Model were used
with glow sticks added to them to simulate what
crews used for night recognition on the antennas.
To make the glow sticks I simply cut off the water

mix of Tamiya XF-4 Yellow Green and X-25 Clear
Green paint into the hole and then glued the cap
back on. Simple! I made sure the sticks were sitting
in the water bottle correctly depending on the
angle of the water bottle. I made the banana peel
from Apoxie Sculpt as well, and placed it in a spot
to suggest the crewman tried to throw it from the
vehicle but didn’t quite make it that far. The idea of
banana peel and water and pop bottles added to
the cluttered look I was going for.
CONCLUSION
From the onset I knew this was going to be a very
long and involved project. I worked on this model
for nearly two and half years, often having to set
it aside for sometimes a month at a time. This was
necessary to keep from getting overwhelmed from
all the detail that you see in the final product. I set
out to make as true a representation of Stryker that
was used in OIF. •

a general light shade of olive green, used for the third coat when airbrushing the
gradients, over the upper parts of the model. This step helped me to subtly blend all
of the different faded olive green tones. It also gave the faded white-green tones
seen at the extreme highlights a bit of colour. At this point I applied the markings

THE KIT
I used the old Skybow kit for this build, which is a
superb model straight out of the box. You can still
pick up one of these kits very cheaply, however if
you can’t find one AFV Club took over the moulds
when Skybow disappeared from the scene and now
produce several variations based on this kit. The
kit I had also included a soft plastic mantlet cover,
which again AFV Club now offers as an accessory.
THE BUILD
Building the kit is very straightforward as all the
parts fit extremely well and have excellent detail
too. The only changes I made were really cosmetic
in nature. The barrel travel-lock was changed to
the closed position, which only took a minute or
two to sort out. A few nuts made from plastic-card
also went onto the fender edges and the tow-cable
ends were drilled out and a suitable piece of rope
added. On the turret, I added some spare photo-
etched tie-downs to the sides and made up the
fittings for the tool stowage, as I wanted to leave
the tools off as per my references.
The .50cal mount was also moved to a different
position as seen in the pictures. The soft plastic
mantlet cover went on very well using CA glue and
Tamiya extra thin cement. The effect of the fabric
is very well done. Some small seam lines were
cleaned up using Tamiya glue to lightly blend the
seams away. My only extravagance was to replace
the kit’s tracks with some Spade Ace white metal
tracks, which had much better detail. They also
helped achieve the tight 'live' look and each run
needed seventy-three links.
AFV Edition 39
The standard kit tracks were replaced with a cast metal set from Space Ace, available online The tie-downs on the turret sides were also substituted with brass
items for better detail

Nice detail shot of the KV-1M turret The ISU152 is one of only two captured

its main armaments removed. It was later

A CLOSER LOOK
Before I started on the build I took out all of the
parts to see what I thought of the quality of the
moulding and scale of the parts. I have to be
honest, I was a little disappointed. The sides of the
hull had some very bad sink marks and the tools
seemed over scale as did the hull roof top light
brackets. Not to be put off, I got all my Tiger spares
in from the stash. I had hoped to build the kit using
just the Zvezda parts and could have I suppose, but
in my mind would just not have looked right. It has
to sit in my cabinet once complete!

TURRET TIME
Okay, now to the turret. The kit has a lot of internal
detail to add in here. A lot of this will not be seen,
unless you want to leave the turret roof unglued I The roadwheels carry an excellent level of detail

is the safe end of the mighty '88. No issues here,
so onto Stages 6, 7 and 8. In Stage 7, part B66
looks to be a late periscope cover. I replaced this
with one made from plastic card, checking pictures
of early Tigers.
Once the turret roof had been fixed in place and
any gaps filled and sanded, I added detail to the
track holders and rear stowage bin. I managed to
lose part B67 (no doubt the carpet will give it up
one day). Stage 21 now instructs you to add the
turret roof hatches, which I did. They also offer a
choice of 'version 1 and 2'. I can only assume that
this means rear turret escape hatch open or closed.
Using a pyrogravure, I added weld seams that I
thought needed a bit of enhancement. That was
pretty much the build done and I had jumped about
between stages, mainly for ease of building. Each The standard kit tracks are well detailed; they

colour, applied to all of the links and any spares
More Vallejo Acrylics were used to create the dark yellow top colour The paintwork was sealed in at this stage, to fix the effects securely
With the dark yellow on, the olive green camouflage pattern was applied.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well, she looks like a Tiger I. It’s such a shame that
Zvezda didn’t pay more attention to areas such
as the tools and lights. It appears that it may have
had different designers for different areas. I’m not
aware if the turret shape is right or wrong, with
regards to being asymmetrical, but it looks okay to
me. I don’t know what market they are aiming at,
but if you save your pennies, you could probably
buy a better model with fewer sink marks etc. It's a
shame as I was looking forward to building this; I'll
give this kit six out of ten. •
