Grading Rubric Paper 1 (CRA)

MMW 121, Fall 2017

In order to do well on this assignment, you must complete the required plagiarism tutorials,
submit your annotations and a 2-page summary of the argument, and accomplish the following:

1. Annotations: Identify and label in the left margin what the authors says in each paragraph of
the assigned manifesto essay.
2. Annotations: Identify and label in the right what each paragraph does to structure the
argument:
a. Topic/Background g. Counter-evidence/argument
b. Problem h. Rebuttal
c. Question (implicit or explicit) i. Action plan
d. Thesis/Declaration of the Manifesto j. Significance/implications\
e. Claims k. Cited Research
f. Evidence
3. Write a two-page summary of the argument made in the manifesto (what the authors says)
and how it is constructed (what the author does).
a. Explain the connection between the problem, declaration (thesis) and action plan in
the manifesto
b. Identify the main claims and evidence used to demonstrate the problem and to
support the thesis/action plan
c. Discuss how the writer addresses the counter-arguments/evidence where relevant
d. Discuss how the writer addresses the significance/implications of the manifesto
4. Paraphrase all ideas; summarize in your own words
5. Incorporate cited research; provide in-text citations in MLA format where needed.
6. Provide a Works Cited page in MLA format.
7. Use clear, grammatically correct, stylistically effective expository prose. See green
highlighting for errors.

A-/A: Meets all of the above criteria at an exceptionally high level, exceeding expectations, in
most, if not all instances

B/B+: Meets most of the above criteria at a high level, with only minor exceptions

C+/B-: Meets most of the above criteria at a high level, with some more serious issues that
interfere with full realization of goals

C-/C: Minimally meets the above criteria, and for the most part succeeds at an acceptable level,
but assignment is difficult to follow or not compelling because of issues with one or more
criteria

D: Meets some criteria; often unclear or undeveloped; errors significantly impair the
assignment

F: Fails to complete all three parts of the assignment (three tutorials, annotations, summary)
or topic is unrelated to the assigned prompt
