GENERAL

The purpose of this document is to give a global overview

of the various criteria which allow determination of the ve-
hicles operating conditions for maintenance of the ve-
hicles. It arises from a more general document which
serves as a common language for all business sectors.
Used at all levels, this system will allow design offices to
design the vehicles better, sales staff to appreciate the
needs of customers better, and after-sales staff to maintain
the vehicles most effectively. This global approach is es-
sential to improve our productivity and profitability, and will
enable us to improve our customer loyalty.

The operating conditions of industrial vehicles depend on:

1 the vehicle utilisation
2 the transport mission
3 the operating environment

TRANSPORT CYCLE

Definitions
Long distance:

If the distance between the loading and unloading points

is greater than 50 km.

General nature: few stops, long distance between stops,

high average speed

Distribution - Regional:

If the distance between the loading and unloading points

is between 5 and 50 km.

General nature: numerous stops, moderate distance be-

tween stops, dense traffic with some stop-starts

Distribution - City:

If the distance between the loading and unloading points

is less than 5 km and if the vehicle spends more than half
its time in a built-up area.

General nature: numerous stops, short distance between

stops, low average speed, dense traffic with numerous
stop-starts

Construction:

If the vehicle is used, even partially, on construction sites,

in forests, on agricultural land etc.

Annual usage
The annual usage corresponds to the distance covered or Transport cycles Distribution and Construction entail a
the number of operating hours performed annually. lower annual mileage with high stress on the driveline,
such as for a refuse collector, concrete mixer, dumper and

age (80 000 –> 400 000 km) accompanied by moderate take-off.
stress on the driveline.
For these vehicles, the engine operating hours are as im-
portant as the mileage.

TRANSPORT MISSIONS

Definitions
Transport tasks depend on:

– the type of body,

– handling constraints,

– special equipment.

tion" uses.

All bodies marked (*) must be regarded as "Construc-
tion" uses.

Equipment mounted at the front and /

Crane mounted (removable or not) (*) Mobile tailgate
or on the sides of the vehicle (*)

GROSS COMBINATION WEIGHT (GCW)

The gross combination weight (ton) corresponds to the

maximum weight technically or legally permitted:

– carrier solo: gross vehicle weight GVW,

– carrier, trailer and tractor: gross combination weight

GCW.

The transport authorities impose limits on these weights

for the public road. The values are generally well below
those of the manufacturer.

The maximum GCW permitted may also depend on other

factors such as vehicle tax or insurance company
conditions.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

Topography
Predominantly flat (PF):
Most journeys are made on flat or slightly undulating roads
with low height changes and gentle gradients (plains,
plateaux).

• Gradients >3% for up to 20% of total mileage

• Gradients >6% for up to 1% of total mileage

• Maximum gradients 16%

Hilly (H):
Most journeys are made on undulating roads with moder-
ate height changes and gradients (hills).

• Gradients >3% for up to 35% of total mileage

• Gradients >6% for up to 10% of total mileage

• Gradients >9% for up to 1% of total mileage

• Maximum gradients 20%

Very hilly (VH):
Most journeys are made on roads with great height differ-
ences or gradients, or transports are of the type: mining,
dam construction sites, etc.

surface.

roads or off-road.

Climatic conditions
Climate can vary within extreme limits: heat, cold, relative
humidity etc. Each of these parameters adds specific con-
ditions for the vehicle: cooling capacity and cold-starting
ancillaries for example.

In a given climatic zone, the vehicle properties must be

perfectly adapted to these parameters to ensure an opti-
mum operating result.
