NOTES
Traditional Worship
There is remarkable unity as well as mystery in
Scripture. After all, would you want a Bible in which
everything could be explained? You would then have
a god who could be comprehended by the smartest
human mind. We already know how much trouble
the “human mind” is in! Having said that, today we
see once again the remarkable unity of the entire
Book. The place of Abraham and Isaac’s encounter
was the the region of Mt. Moriah. The Scriptures
do not specify a particular mountain. They do,
however, note that this was the place on which
Solomon built the Temple, a piece of land purchased
by his father, King David. This was also the region
in which the Lamb of God was the ultimate, final
sacrifice. Thus, around 2,000 bc, Abraham took
Isaac to the region of Mt. Moriah to build an altar
to sacrifice his only son. Around 1,000 bc, King
David purchased property in Mt. Moriah where his
son, Solomon, built the Temple to offer atoning
sacrifices in the worship of God. Another 1,000
years later, God offered His only son, Jesus, who was
crucified as the ultimate, final, perfect sacrifice for
the sins of the whole world. Notice the details of
Scripture. There are no wasted words. In the words
of our opening hymn, “Hail, Abraham’s God and
mine! With heaven our songs we raise. All might
and majesty are thine, and endless praise!”

THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Share a time when your beliefs and convictions were
tested, as you were asked to do something with
which you did not agree or fully understand. Did you
end up doing it and why or why not?
2. Verse 1 states that God tested Abraham. What do you
think God was hoping to see in Abraham's response?
3. From the Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible: "In the
story of Abraham and Isaac we find obedience and
worship intertwined: Abraham was obeying God's
command to sacrifice Isaac as an act of worship.
What do you think comes first, obedience or worship?
Or are they inseparable?" (p. 46).
4. Because of Abraham's obedience, God declares that
we, as his descendants, are blessed. Through Jesus,
however, we are blessed as salvation is granted by
faith through grace (Eph 2:8-9). Thus, our blessing
moves from something earned to something gifted.
For Christians, how do/should we respond to God's
gift in Jesus Christ?
5. As Abraham's "offspring" (v. 17), and ultimately as
believers in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are blessed
in other amazing ways. Can you either share how
God has blessed you personally, or how others in
your group have blessed you?
6. How can we help each other within our groups to
live out what God has already promised to us as His
children - to be "blessings" to others?
7. What are you willing to sacrifice in order to love and
serve your neighbors and the community well?
