MODEL QUESTION PAPER
Time: 03 Hours Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to candidates:
1. Answer FIVE full questions selecting one from each unit.
2. Each unit consisting of two questions of 20 marks each.
3. Use of IRC 6,IRC 21 ,SP:16,Pigeaud s curves,IS 456 is permitted.

UNIT-1 Marks
1 a Explain various forces to be considered while designing
10
bridges and explain any two in detail.
b Describe the factors governing the selection of a type of
bridge and explain any two in detail.
10

2 a Classify the bridges on different aspects and explain any

10
two with sketches.
b Describe in detail the investigations to be carried out before
10
construction of the bridge.
UNIT-2
3 a Distinguish between a box culvert and a slab culvert with
05
sketches and how are they useful
b Design the box culvert for the following details.
Road width =7.5 m,Height of vent =3m
Clear span = 3 m,Footpath on either side =0.6 m
Thickness of wearing coat =80 mm
Type of load IRC class A loading 15
Materials used M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel
Angle of repose of soil = 30 0 Density of soil =18 Kn/m3
Draw the cross section of the culvert and show the details
of reinforcement.
The following data refers to a deck slab culvert.
4 Road is a two lane national highway
Span =5m(clear),footpath 1m on either side
Wearing coat =80 mm thick
Loading is IRC CLASS AA tracked
20
Materials used are M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Analyse and Design the slab and sketch the details of
reinforcement provided.

5 The following data pertains to a T beam slab bridge. 20

Span = 14 m, Number of longitudinal girders =3
Spacing of longitudinal girder =3m c/c
Loading is IRC class AA tracked
Dec - 2017 PG Examinations
Materials are M 25 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel .
Centre to centre distance of cross girder is 3.5 m c/c.
Design the interior panel of the bridge and sketch the
reinforcement details.
6 Analyse and design the cross girder for the following data:
width of roadway =7.5 m
Effective span =20 m
Average thickness o wearing coat =80 mm
Materials are M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel
Longitudinal girders are at 3m c/c. 20
Cross girders at 5m c/c , Thickness of deck slab =250 mm.
Overall depth of longitudinal girder =2000 mm
Dimension of cross girder is same as that of longitudinal
girder,loading is IRC Class A.

UNIT-4
7 a Explain different types of bearings used in bridges?
10
With a neat sketch explain elastomeric bearing.
b Explain expansion joints in a bridge and what are the
10
requirements to be satisfied?
8 a With neat sketches explain rocker bearings and roller
10
bearings?
b Design a mild steel rocker bearing for transmitting the
superstructure reactive load of 1200kN?
Given: Allowable bearing pressure on bearing block 3.8MPa
10
Permissible bending stress 0.66fy=165MPa
Permissible bearing stress =100MPa
Permissible shear stress =100MPa
UNIT-5
9 a Describe the advantages of pre stressed concrete bridges
over RCC bridges. 10
b With sketches explain the different types of cross sections
of pre tensioned, pre stressed concrete bridge decks. 10
Classify their usage depending on the spans.
10 Design a post tensioned pre stressed concrete slab bridge
deck for a national highway to suit the following data
Clear span=10m, width of bearing=400mm
Clear width of road way=7.5m
Footpath 1m on eitherside , kerbs=600mm wide,
Thickness of wearing coat 80mm
Live load =IRC class AA tracked vehicle
10
Type of structure: class 1 type, materials used M40 grade
concrete and 7mm dia high tensile wires with an ultimate
tensile strength of 1500n/mm 2 housed in cables with 12
wires and anchored by freyssinet anchorages of 150mm dia.
Fci=35N/mm2
Loss ratio=0.8
Determine the minimum pre stressing force and eccentricity
