Structure: Wishes
Aims: Ss will practise wishes and will develop their speaking skills
Objectives: By the end of the lesson Ss will:
 Use the “I wish/if only” structure correctly
 Form full sentences in stating wishes by using “wish” or “if only”
 Work in groups and interact with each other
Assumptions:
Ss have already been exposed to conditional clauses and they should be
familiar with the structure
Anticipated problems:
Some Ss may have difficulties in expressing wishes/regrets about a
present situation, regrets about the past and may forget that „wish” and
„would” should have different subjects

Activity 1.
Warmer
Aims: to greet Ss, to make the presence, to appreciate Ss’ work, to
preview, predict and anticipate the topic of the lesson
Timing: 7 minutes

Procedure: Teacher greets the students by saying ‘Good morning, class’
and ‘How are you today?’. After greeting, teacher wants students to close
their eyes and asks ”What do you want to do now?” or “Where do you
want to be now instead of in the classroom?”. Teacher’s aim is to prepare
students for the lesson by providing them to think about their wishes.

Activity 2
Presentation
Aims: to present wishes/regrets about a present situation we want to be
different/ wishes, regrets in the present concerning lack of ability, regrets
that something happened or didn’t happen in the past and wishes for a
future change unlikely to happen
Timing: 12 minutes

Procedure2. After students tell about their wishes, the teacher says that
almost everybody likes dreaming and we have many wishes and that we
are going to talk about situations in the present that we are not happy
about but we cannot change, about regrets about the past and future
changes. Then, she passes to PowerPoint in order to show other people’s
wishes. The teacher shows people’s wishes by using pictures on the
PowerPoint. There are sample sentences in order to state their wishes and
teacher wants students pay attention to the structure. After showing
PowerPoint, teacher wants students repeat the sentences after her and
writes the grammar structures and their uses on the blackboard.

Activity 3
Practice
Aims: to provide Ss with a suitable context to practise „wishes” and to
check students’ understanding
Timing: 15 minutes

Procedure: The teacher hands out worksheets to the class. In groups, Ss
have to make sentences by using the „I wish/ If only” structure.

Activity 4
500 Days of Summer Movie Segment

Aims: to obtain evidence of learning, to contextualize the previously


presented grammar point
Timing: 11 minutes
Class management: Group work

Procedure: The T plays the 500 Days of Summer movie segment, the
chosen scene being perfect to practise the use of wish and if only, because
it shows at the same time what the main character expected to happen
before his date and what actually happened. The Ss have to make
sentences paraphrasing the main character’s expectations,
using wish or if only

Activity 5
Assigning Homework

Aims: to give Ss further practice on the new structure to make students


use their previous knowledge

Procedure: T gives her Ss some worksheets based on the recently
acquired structure
