“Strength and Decency” by Theodore Roosevelt

The cultural issue discussed in this speech is that American, especially strong men,
should set a right example to others. In this speech, Theodore Roosevelt said that it is
incumbent upon those who have strength to set a right example to others. He said that
he wanted to see in his country the decent men strong and the strong men decent. He
states that “if anyone of you in the presence of younger boys, and especially younger
people of our own family, misbehave yourself, if you use coarse and blasphemous
language before then, you can be sure that these young people will follow your example
and not your precept. It is no use to preach to then if you do not act decently yourself.
You must feel that the most effective way in which you can preach is by your practice.”
