This report provides both summary information on the salary schedule practices of Missouri school districts and specific
information on the basic features of a number of districts’ salary schedules. The format of the report continues to evolve as
new information and reader suggestions are incorporated. If you have suggestions for other improvements to this report,
please contact the MSTA Salary and Research Department below.
Information is empowering. For decades, MSTA has empowered teachers with the most
comprehensive information about teacher salaries in Missouri. Each year the MSTA research and
salary team puts together a report detailing the salaries of every district in the state. If you ever
wondered how your district compares, this is the best way to learn.
This year, we’ve made comparing districts even easier with the ability to search our report with a new
interactive tool that allows you to compare salaries and benefits by region, county, district and size of
district. You can find the tool on our website at www.msta.org/2018salary.
It’s probably no surprise that once again, our annual research shows that although Missouri teachers
are making small gains in salaries, they are still making less than teachers nationwide.
For first-year teachers, there is a $19,163 difference between the highest paying district and the
districts paying the state mandated minimum starting salary. Of note, if the state minimum salary
had kept pace with the cost of living increases, that same teacher would make $30,348.26 instead of
$25,000.
While the salary growth information is not what we would like to see, MSTA members are working
to overcome this trend. At our annual convention in November, MSTA delegates again adopted
resolutions prioritizing educator salaries. As an association, MSTA continues to support an increase to
the minimum statewide salary schedule.
Further, MSTA also supports an annual equitable salary increment for additional years of service and
additional education experience and recognition of teachers’ actual years of experience for salary
schedule advancement and placement.
We are working closely with the legislature to move the salaries of professional educators to better
reflect compensation for the time, energy and dedication that goes into teaching Missouri’s students.
Information is empowering! I encourage you to take a look at the comparison tool and make use
of our Salary Negotiations and Finance 101 Workshops online and our in-person workshops. Get
informed. Get involved. Get empowered.
Sincerely,
Bruce Moe

Response rates
518 out of 518 Missouri school districts responded to the mailed salary questionnaires
(which included a request for a copy of the actual district salary schedule). Additionally,
many respondents sent their non-certificated, support staff employees pay plans
or stated that they have no board-approved pay plan. The Missouri State Teachers
Association is deeply appreciative of the high degree of cooperation of school
administrators in collecting this information.
