Overview: Since 2014, USADF has awarded over $3M
to youth entrepreneurs in over 30 countries and 15+
sectors. Here are the current grantees as of February 1st
2017.
Program Strategy: Our goal is to catalyze young people to U.S. African Development Foundation
launch and expand their social and business ventures. In Ellington Arnold, Program Analyst

Angels Initiative Summary: In Uganda, it is difficult to access capital to start a venture or expand an existing small

iCount Liberia Summary: Liberian economy can succeed and be the recipe for job creation if it is equipped with basic
services. James is empowering the setup, the recruiting and the training of an effective quality workforce
to provide management and bookkeeping services small and growing businesses.

KABIR OLAJIDE Nigeria $25,000 Sector: WASH/WATER

Adunni Water Factory Summary: In Nigeria, many youth drop out of school and find themselves unemployed with a lack of
opportunities. Kabir is championing youth empowerment by creating jobs for school drop-outs as financial
aid to sustain their studies while providing rural communities with clean and affordable drinking water.

MINASE FAYE Ethiopia $25,000 Sector: Finance

Warka Payments Summary: Ethiopia is the world’s fastest growing economy, but one of its biggest obstacles is the lack of
information on business transactions. Minase has developed a cash register machine which he will
distribute for free which can also be used as bank processing machines and mobile banking agents. This
will simplify transaction follow up, process bankcards and mobile money, collect expenses online, declare
and pay taxes online creating a more transparent and robust economy.

MIXON FALUWEKI Malawi $10,000 Sector: Retail

Padoko Electronics Bike Lights Summary In Malawi, approximately only 10 percent of the population has access to electricity. Mixon
recognized the detriment this has on students and is working to increase performance amongst students
by providing them with healthier and sustainable lighting solution during their studies at night through the
use of rechargeable bike lights.

Borena Watt a Woman Coop Summary: Remote and rural communities in South Africa are often off the grid and do not have
access to reliable energy. Morwesi is working to overcome energy poverty in rural communities by
empowering women to invest in energy generation facilities and in the process create more
sustainable lives with an additional revenue stream.

PAUL NKUMBULA Zambia $10,000 Sector: Renewable Energy

Mabo Village Energy Exchange Summary: It isn’t rare for villages like Mabo in Zambia to be located 300Km away from the
electrical grid. Paul is enhancing people’s livelihoods and providing means of sustainable income
generation in rural communities by providing an integrated renewable energy system solution.

XP Water Tank Summary: Over 70% of people living in Kenya’s arid areas rely on rain for safe drinking water.
Unfortunately, conventional plastic or concrete tanks of sufficient capacity for families or small
communities are beyond the price point of most lower income parts of society. Peter is increasing
access to rainwater by producing more cost efficient water tanks for rain dependent communities.

WESLEY OWITI Kenya $25,000 Sector: Finance

Cherehani Initiative Summary: In Kenya, over 20 percent of adults in rural areas lack access to formal banking
services. Unemployment tops 40 percent, and rural poverty levels are high. Operating in 5
counties, Wesley brings training and capital to women: he has provided sewing machines to over
600 women and made small business loans to more than 300, and couples this catalytic support
with training on how to run a small business.

BERNARD ODURO Ghana $25,000 Sector: Agriculture/Advertising

Omanbapa Agripreneurship Summary: Many smallholder farmers in Ghana struggle to increase their production levels and
improve the quality of their yields. Meanwhile, the demand for food products is only increasing, as
the population rises. To increase productive, economic activity, Bernard is implementing product
branding, packaging, and delivery. Farmers can earn more on their outputs and consumers can
choose from quality products that they know have been safely packaged and processed.

LINCOLN PEEDAH Ghana $25,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Neat Meat Guinea Fowls Summary: The Ghanaian market for guinea fowl is collapsing, due to the lack of processing in the
value chain. Lincoln is focusing on adding value by improving the safe hygienic processing and
careful handling of poultry bought directly from farmers; this intentional processing, packaging and
refrigeration of the meat will help ensure that consumers have access to higher quality products,
and more nutritious, safer food.

Nutrie Foods Summary: In Zimbabwe, there is a of training for farmers on efficient farming methods and proper
inputs. The results is inadequate and inconsistent availability of peanuts, leading to lost
production for farmers and lower earnings for women farmers. Nobukhosi is empowering women
peanut farmers by increasing their productivity as well as income.

NOEL SOME Burkina Faso $10,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Agriss Summary: More than 80% of inhabitants in Burkina Faso are living in rural areas and rely on
agriculture to generate income. Due to climate change, rains will become increasingly erratic,
harvests will decline, and the poverty level will still rise. To confront these issues, Noel is
improving livelihoods in rural populations by setting up ICT based services for agriculture
extension and the market information’s system.

ORIANE BADA Benin $10,000 Sector: Agriculture

Green Garden Farm Summary: In Benin, there is an increasing demand for organic food, especially in young
professional mothers. Oriane is working towards food security, health, women empowerment,
and environmental preservation in the community by developing large scale organic food farms.

OURA BOURIMA Benin $25,000 Sector: Agriculture

Gardens of Hope Summary: Seeds are the most important input in agriculture and in Benin, like most of West
Africa, more than 90 percent of seeds are imported. Imported seeds are primarily selected and
produced for a European Mediterranean climate and do not adapt well to local conditions and
contribute to lower harvest yields. Oura is increasing productivity and production for small
farmers in Benin through seed extension.

STANELY ALPHONCE Tanzania $10,000 Sector: ICT/ Services

SmartFit Meal Cards Summary: Traditionally university students get their cash meal allowances, they purchase their
food from the campus’s privately owned cafeterias, which operate on a cash basis only. This
means that if you don’t have cash you are unable to eat. Stanely is enhancing the educational
environment and nutritional security of students by improving access to meals on campus and
helping students manage their spending through the creation a meal card system.

TSIFERANA RAZAFIMANDIMBY Madagascar $25,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Cassava Bread Factory Summary: Regular access to healthy food is a challenge for low income people in Madagascar.
Tsiferana is working to provide cassava bread as an affordable, healthy food that lifts customers
out of hunger daily as well as build capacity for Malagasy youth by partnering with vocational
training center to teach skills in bread manufacturing.

YESSE OLJANGE Tanzania $25,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Avomeru Group Summary: Every year, over 100 million avocados are being underutilized in northern Tanzania,
going to waste or being fed to livestock. The avocados’ short shelf-life makes them largely
unsuitable for export, even to nearby local markets. Yesse is capturing value from the avocados
by processing them into a higher value product with a better shelf-life; avocado oil. In doing so,
raising the standard of living and reducing post-harvest losses for smallholder avocado farmers.

Alfie Designs Summary: In Ghana’s fashion industry, there are not enough trained workers who can meet
international production standards. Adjo Dede is training young women in sewing, tailoring, and
design, enabling them to move out of poverty and contribute to the sector as skilled workers.

ALLEGRIA NTUMBA Democratic $10,000 Sector: Manufacturing (WASH)

Eco-Propre Republic of the Summary: In Kinshasa, many households cannot afford high-priced retail cleaning products, and
Congo are exposed to avoidable containments and bacteria. Allegria is creating affordable, eco-friendly
cleaning products to reduce the spread of disease, employ women, and improve living standards.

AUXIRIA MWANZA Zambia $10,000 Sector: Tourism (Training)

African Hive Camping & Tours Summary: Zambia’s tourism industry is fast growing, and can contribute to employment and
environmental conservation. Auxiria is providing training camps for young people, enabling them to
learn the skills they need to work in eco-tourism.

BRENDA KATWESIGYE Uganda $25,000 Sector: Health (Technology)

Wazi Vision Summary: In Uganda, more than 10 percent of school children have undiagnosed vision problems,
but could not afford prescription eyeglasses, even if they had their eyesight tested. Brenda is
tackling these intertwined problems by providing a cost-effective, mobile diagnostic vision test, and
turning recycled plastic into affordable eyewear for low-income students.

CHARLES AKHIMIEN Nigeria $25,000 Sector: Health (Technology)

MOBicure Summary: Per capita, Nigeria has the world’s 2nd highest mortality rate for new mothers, infants,
and children under the age of 5. That is why Charles is developing MOBicure, using SMS text and
voice recognition technology and a mobile platform to provide women with life-saving health data
and monitoring, allowing them to access time-sensitive information 24/7.

EBUNOLUWA FARINDE Nigeria $10,000 Sector: Training (Fashion)

Oge-Ibile Summary: African women work very hard, but do not thrive economically. Ebunoluwa is expanding
her textile and clothing manufacturing work, to train disadvantaged women with
Marketable and promote indigenous African culture through design.

Nuya’s Essence Summary: The Tanzanian market is replete with chemically-based skin care products and
cosmetics that are harmful to people’s health. Hellen is providing an eco-friendly, economic
alternative in Zanzibar, where she is manufacturing and selling natural, affordable products and
employing low income women.

HONORE ESSOH Cote d’Ivoire $25,000 Sector: Youth (Entertainment)

Bouyou Animated TV Series Summary: Ivorian educational content and role models on television are limited for young children.
Honoré is narrowing the gap in African-created children’s media through his animated TV series
featuring superheroes from Cote d’Ivoire. His shows reflect the life a west African child, with
cultural pride and inquiry via the characters’ adventures.

KAMRU AMIN Uganda $25,000 Sector: Distribution (Health)

GasoPharm Summary: Over 2 out of 5 Ugandans have a hard time accessing medical facilities, and when they
do, medicine can be scarce. In Kampala, Kamru is providing personalized pharmaceutical care
along with over-the-counter medications, free health-promotion screening campaigns, and a plan
to expand to reach more low and middle income people.

KHADIDIATOU NAKOULIMA Senegal $25,000 Sector: Services (Health)

NEST for All Summary: Senegal’s public medical care is poor, and private hospitals out of most people’s reach,
even if they have some insurance. Khadidiatou is making people healthier by building a network
of affordable maternal health units for women and newborns.

KRYSTAL-BELLA SHABANI Burundi $10,000 Sector: Training (Fashion)

Krysabel Summary: The clothing and design sectors can contribute to trade and the local economy, but
many women are not trained to participate or benefit in the fashion industry. Krysta-Bella is
training women to create locally sourced, eco-friendly fabric, contributing to the national culture
with unique products and improving their skills and livelihoods.

MESAY LICHE Ethiopia $25,000 Sector: Youth (Education)

New Preschool Summary: Attitude and possibility starts young, but the school system in Ethiopia is designed for
rote rather than creative learning. Mesay is setting up a Montessori-based primary school to
address this lack, engaging both children and parents in the learning and development process.
He plans to expand nationally, and set up schools that teach in the local language.

SITRIKA RAKOTONDRAIBE Madagascar $25,000 Sector: Services (Health)

Aeromedical Health Center Summary: Access to affordable healthcare in Madagascar is a challenge that many women and
families face. Through Aeromedical Health Center, Sitraka is improving the health and well-being
of women in Madagascar by expanding a women-run clinic providing affordable care for vulnerable
populations.

MaliSante Summary: Malian doctors and patients lose a lot of time waiting, due to the lack of a systematic
scheduling program for doctors’ appointments. To address this, Tidiane is running MaliSante, a
platform that provides medical information, doctor’s office locations, and appointment scheduling
services, to make managing patient care more efficient and to make people more healthy.

KEMO TOURE Senegal $25,000 Sector: Services (Job force)

Wutiko Summary: The job market in Senegal is competitive, and the number of job seekers is only
growing. Kemo has created Wutiko, (“Find It,” in Wolof), a job search platform that connects job
seekers with companies experiencing job vacancies. His service designed to be efficient and
transparent for both parties.

ANGE IRANKUNDA Burundi $10,000 Sector: Manufacturing (Environment)

Earth’s Swagg Summary: Most of Burundi's population uses charcoal and firewood for heating and cooking, in
turn destroying over 6400 hectares of forest each year. Ange’s company, Earth’s Swagg, is
producing fuel briquettes from biodegradable waste and fine charcoal, providing sustainable
heating alternatives.

CAROLYNE EKYARISIIMA Tanzania $10,000 Sector: Training (ICT and Gender)

Apps and Girls Summary: Tanzania is experiencing a gender gap in information communication technology
(ICT) development, training, employment, and entrepreneurship. Carolyne seeks to fill this gap
through Apps and Girls, a project that will train young women in coding, ICT, and business skills,
increasing opportunity for them to participate in the ICT industry.

DYSMUS KISILU Kenya $10,000 Sector: Manufacturing (Energy)

Solar Freeze Summary: Many farmers in Kenya experience post-harvest losses, having portions of their yields
spoil before getting to consumers. Dysmus is helping farmers improve their selling capacity by
producing solar refrigeration units, which will increase produce’s shelf life from 2 to 20 days.

EMILE UWEZOWAMUNGU Burundi $10,000 Sector: Training (Business Support)

Innova Group Summary: In Burundi, many small and medium enterprises struggle with how to better manage,
grow and mobilize their businesses. That is why Emile is launching a company that will provide
coaching, mentoring, and networking advice to help companies build capacity and maximize their
impact.

GEORGES KOUMBASSA Guinea $25,000 Sector: Delivery services (Food Security)

Addition Group Summary: In Guinea, smallholder farmers face the challenge of physically getting their produce to
market while it is still fresh. Georges is helping these farmers by creating an affordable, effective
delivery and monitoring services company to distribute produce.

Umba Create Hub Summary: The current Zimbabwean education curriculum is producing graduates who are not well
suited for the rapidly changing global community. That is why Kudzai is providing skills training and
career planning guidance for young women and high school girls through her business, Farayi
Africa. She will create a centralized location where girls and women can share the learning
experience, gain knowledge and skills, and collaborate.

NAZEEM JUNGGEE Mauritius $25,000 Sector: Manufacturing (Environment)

1950 Design & Print Summary: The digital printing and outdoor media advertising sector in Mauritius contributes tons of
waste to landfills each year. Nazeem wants to take the polyvinyl chlorides (PVC) produced from
this waste and transform it into materials for recycled, reusable tote bags.

NURO MURO Tanzania $10,000 Sector: Retail (Cafe)

Kivuko.com Summary: Connecting local vendors with local customers, Kivuko.com seeks to be a pioneer of e-
commerce in Tanzania. Nuro Muro has created this online marketplace, which provides cost-
effective ways to buy and sell quality products safely and conveniently.

SIMON MALUGU Tanzania $10,000 Sector: Manufacturing (Industrial Uniforms)

Power Token Incubators Summary: Traditional methods of raising chickens in Tanzania can be very labor intensive. Simon
is easing this process for small-scale farmers by producing affordable egg incubators. These
incubators will allow farmers to increase their livelihoods by raising more birds.

TAITA NGETICH Kenya $25,000 Sector: Training (Agriculture)

Illuminum Greenhouses Summary: Smallholder farmers in Kenya rely on rainwater to grow their crops. That is why Taita is
utilizing greenhouses and drip irrigation to help these farmers increase their yields. He is
constructing greenhouses and training farmers on best practices to help them maximize water
usage and increase their production.

TSHIAMO DICHABE South Africa $10,000 Sector: Agriculture (Poultry)

Thari Hydroponics Summary: Tshiamo is developing greenhouses that rely on hydroponics, a method of growing
plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, without using soil. His company will build and
sustain hydroponics systems in Free State Province, South Africa. These structures will produce
high quality vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, all year round to increase
local food security.

MARIUS GNALIS-RAFAI Central African $10,000 Sector: Business Consulting

BeAfrica Innovation Lab
Republic Summary: In the Central African Republic, informal business practices are a serious challenge for
the development of startups and small and medium companies (SMEs), particularly by young
entrepreneurs. The lack of professionalism of these companies in financial literacy and
management is one of the biggest challenges they face when attempting to access capital.
BeAfrica Innovation Lab provides financial management and consulting services to companies and
business executives, including outsourced bookkeeping, financial consulting, workshops on
specific topics, and acceleration programs for aspiring entrepreneurs.

DOLAIN PULULU Democratic $10,000 Sector: IT
Creditech Republic of the Summary: Quality education is only achievable with quality educators. Teachers in the Democratic
Congo Republic of the Congo need access to information for research purposes in order to assist their
students. In addition, in the DRC, most schools lack training and professional development
programs for the teachers. The costs of setting up a teachers development program, building
libraries and computer labs are often prohibitive for most Congolese schools. A powerful
alternative tool is the Internet, which offers access to virtual libraries, encyclopedias, and online
courses for students and teachers. Creditech, a social enterprise which has developed a “Connect
the Teacher” project to help close the digital information gap for teachers in the DRC.

FRANCK KAKEL Democratic $10,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Chicken Husbandry and Chicken Feed
Production
Republic of the Summary: In the DRC, like many other African countries, chicken production costs are high
Congo making it difficult for consumers to afford chicken meat regularly. The high price results in large
part from the high cost of chicken feed, approximately 75 percent of the total production cost. The
Cooperative (CAAPJECO) helps farmers improve their farming skills by offering training and has
conducted a pilot to produce chicken feed from maize and soya grown by local farmers.

STEVE OTEN Kenya $10,000 Sector: Education

Gretta Adult Learning Project Summary: Gretta Adult Learning Project prepares adult students for their high school certificates
and seeks to expand its services in Kisumu and Siaya counties and offer a wider range of courses.

JUSTINE ABUGA Kenya $10,000 Sector: Eco-Manufacturing

Ecobora Summary: Ecobora has developed a low-cost technology that produces wood pellets from
recycled sawdust and rice husks. The company has also supplied 234 stoves to mothers in Limuru
who use the pellets for cooking.

AMANI KARABU Kenya $10,000 Sector: Waste Management

Garb Tech Summary: Garb Tech is committed to addressing the problem of inadequate waste disposal
through efficient, reliable and affordable waste management services. Garb Tech’s services
include collection, transportation and recycling of waste.

STANLEY GITAU Kenya $10,000 Sector: Consulting

Six Degrees Consultancy Summary: Six Degrees Consultancy, which aims to offer business development services to Siaya
County beneficiaries on how to form and join organized groups for collective investment in fish
cage farming, with a special emphasis on women’s participation.

ROBERT MBOYA Kenya $10,000 Sector: Financial Services (Tech)

Smart Wallet Summary: Smart Wallet Expeditions Ltd. Is a start-up that leverages the power of software to
reach youth who own smartphones and assist them to better understand and manage their
finances.

YVETTE ISHIMWE Rwanda $10,000 Sector: Water
Iriba Clean Water Delivery LTD. Summary: In the Eastern province of Rwanda, there is a serious problem of water scarcity. A total
of 67.3 percent of people living in these districts use polluted water from swamps, rivers and lakes
for drinking and household activities. Even when people find clean water sources they tend to
carry the water back home in contaminated containers without realizing the health hazards. In
addition to health and sanitation problems, farmers’ yields are reduced to 84 percent of the
expected yield, especially during the dry seasons when water is scarce and they are unable to
water their farms. IRIBA Clean Water Delivery Ltd. is improving access to reliable and safe water
for drinking, household and farming activities.

MARTIN BUNANE Rwanda $10,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Imarb Garlic Processing Factory Summary: In Rwanda, poor nutrition and unemployment are persistent problems. As a way to
address both of these issues, garlic provides both nutritional value and health benefits, and is an
income-producing product that can sustain job growth. Imarb Group Ltd., a Musanze-based
company specializes in the processing of quality and affordable semi- and fully processed garlic
products. By doing so, improving the standard of living, nutritional and health benefits for low-
income producers and consumers of garlic products in Rwanda.

PRISCILLA RUZIBUKA Rwanda $10,000 Sector: Fashion

Ki-Pepeo Kids Clothing Summary: Only 65 percent of the total female population in Rwanda are literate, leaving 35
percent of the women dependent upon physical labor, agriculture, or informal jobs for their
livelihoods. The Rwandan government recently passed a law abolishing the importation of second
hand clothes, including clothes for the large youth population. The law provides an opportunity to
equip and empower low income women by helping them acquire tailoring skills and find
employment. Ki-Pepeo Kids is manufacturing children’s clothing from readily available materials
and train unskilled women in tailoring.

FRANCIS XAVIER ASIIMWE Uganda $10,000 Sector: Health

Kaaro Health Finance Summary: Kaaro Health Finance Limited (KHF) product solutions are designed to eliminate or
mitigate both energy and finance access issues by providing tailor-made, flexible lease-to-own
medical and renewable energy equipment financing to private healthcare entrepreneurs who are
already operating or intending to expand into underserved rural areas.

RHODAH IRAKIZA Uganda $10,000 Sector: Supply Chain Logistics

Mr. Gift Summary: A social enterprise focused on improving access for smallholder flower farmers to local
markets by improving the supply chain.

EMMANUEL LUYINDA Uganda $10,000 Sector: Agribusiness

Village Chicken Summary: A social enterprise focused on empowering rural women in Kavule, Luwero district to
start and run sustainable and profitable poultry ventures and to supply nutritious chicken meat and
eggs to the community.

HASHIM MUTANJE Uganda $10,000 Sector: Renewable Energy

Solar Pipo Summary: The founder is CEO of People and Energy Limited, a start-up company that seeks to
match consumers’ energy needs with available, suitable energy solutions through its SolarPipo
app.

AgroStretch Limited Summary: AgroStretch Limited develops sustainable, efficient and affordable products and service
for smallholder farmers to increase their profitability. It has developed a Fresh Tomato Bank to
process tomatoes into puree and enable tomato farmers to minimize their post-harvest losses and
obtain a fair and steady price for their produce.

Kizimba Social Enterprise Summary: A social enterprise focused on goat breeding and rearing and providing necessary skills
training in modern farming to youth farmers.
