Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.

Q.1. A second order system is described by the equation 2
2  10 y (t )  10 * F (t )
dt dt
Where F(t) is unit step input and assume zero initial condition.
Find the expression for y(t)
Plot the output
Calculate the ringing frequency. [3 + 1 + 1 = 5]

Q.2. In a Michelson interferometer, 100 fringes cross the field of view when the movable
mirror is displaced by 0.02948mm.Calculate the wavelength of monochromatic source. [4]

Q.3. A certain experiment is presumed to behave according to the following equation

y  a  cx 2 for -1<y<1 and -1<x<1, the following data points are collected.

Perform the Least-squares analysis to obtain the best values of 'a' and c'. [12]

Q.4. Two measurements X,Y have Gaussian distribution. The mean and standard deviation of
X are 10 and 0.5 respectively. The mean and standard deviation of Y are 5 and 0.2
respectively.
Given Z=X+Y.
Calculate the mean of Z
Calculate the standard deviation of Z
Find out the extreme values of Z (i.e. deviation from the mean) such that the measured
value falls between the extreme values with 99.73% probability. [1 + 1 + 2 = 4]

the weight lifted by the hydraulic press when the force applied at the plunger is 500N.
[2.5]
Q.5 (b) (b) Calculate the pressure due to column of 0.3Mtr of (i) water (ii). Oil at specific
gravity of 0.8 (iii). Mercury of specific gravity 13.6. Take the density of

ρ=1000kg/m^3. [1 + 1 + 0.5 = 2.5]

Q.6. Water and oil flow in horizontal pipelines. A double U-tube manometer is connected
between the pipelines as shown in the sketch below. Calculate the pressure difference
between the water pipe and the oil pipe. Note that the densities for water, carbon
tetrachloride, air, and oil are 1000 kg/m3, 1590 kg/m3, 1.23 kg/m3, and 912 kg/m3,
respectively. The gravity acceleration is 9.81 m/s2. [5]

thermocouple?
Q.7 (b) Explain their advantages and disadvantages with their conclusive remarks?
Q.7 (c) What are the factors to be considered while selecting the thermo couple [1 + 1 + 1 = 3]

Q.8 (a) Explain the relation between stress and strain with neat sketch? [0.5]
Q.8 (b) Explain the effect of temperature on viscosity with fluids and gases? [0.5]
Q.8 (c) A plate 0.025mm distant from a fixed plate moves at 60 cm/sec and requires a force of 2N per
unit area to maintain this speed. Determine the fluid viscosity between the plates? [1]
