Abstract
In case of direct lightning strike to a building dangerous sparking may occur between the external lightning protection system and conductive installations
inside the building. To avoid such side ashes a minimum separation distance between conductive parts inside the building and the air termination or down
conductor system is required. The standard IEC 62305-3 provides formulae to determine the necessary separation distance. Objective of the paper is to re-
visit the determination of separation distances. The international standard IEC 62305-3 recommends using electrically conductive parts of a building or
structure as so-called 'natural components' of the lightning protection system. The use of such extended metal parts can lead to signi cant reduction of the
necessary separation distances. Objective of the paper is also to study the necessary separation distances for buildings using metal roofs, walls or attics as
integral part of the lightning protection system. Such con gurations are not yet covered by the IEC-standards.

May 2007 · Journal of Electrostatics · Impact Factor: 0.86

In the paper the results obtained from experiments at a modelled reinforced building in case of a direct lightning strike are compared with calculations. The comparison
includes peak values of the magnetic eld Hmax, its derivative (dH/dt)max and of induced voltages umax in typical cable routings. The experiments are performed at a
1:6 scaled building and the results are extrapolated using the... [Show full abstract]

June 2004 · IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility · Impact Factor: 1.30

This paper presents measurements of the voltages, the magnetic elds and the magnetic- eld derivatives inside a structure simulating reinforced concrete buildings. The
test structure comprises a cubic cage of 2-m side length with single- or double-layer reinforced grids. The injected lightning currents simulate the positive, the negative
rst and the negative subsequent return strokes with... [Show full abstract]

June 2006 · IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility · Impact Factor: 1.30

This paper presents a numerical electromagnetic analysis of magnetic elds and loop voltages inside reduced- and full-scale lightning protection systems (LPSs)
"structures" resulting from direct lightning strikes. The method of moments is employed to model the whole structure in three dimensions except the lightning channel.
The lightning channel is simulated by the well-known... [Show full abstract]
