Second Vowel Recognition: a, n, d

1. Review printed letters a, n and d and the sound the letter represents.

Mini Lesson Script Materials

How do you write it? Trace letter in rice. (in lieu of
rice, use shaving cream, oatmeal, barley, etc.)

(repeat for each letter)

2. Sort the words that begin with /a/, /n/ and /d/ under each corresponding letter.

Child will look at picture depictions of object that starts with that letter sound, and
orally repeat the phoneme that the teacher audibly tells them.

3. Identify the last sound in a word that ends with /a/, /n/ or /d/.

Teacher will play audio and lead the students in song. Play audio: “What’s the last
sound in these words…” Phoneme Focus Word

Student will respond with the appropriate ending sound.

4. Demonstrate how to blend phonemes to decode a word.
