Introduction

Introduction

General
This Installation Manual describes how to install cables and connectors for Kongsberg
Maritime computer network onboard vessels and rigs. Technical specifications and part
numbers for the recommended cable and connector types are placed in the last section
of this document.
Design information about Kongsberg Maritime networks can be found in the Kongsberg
Maritime Computer Network Design Guidelines (document number 346967).
Note
A separate installation manual (document number 310241) covers the installation of
NDUs (Network Distribution Units).
The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded as a base for detailed
plans prepared by the installation shipyard. These plans must include drawings,
instructions and procedures specific to the ship in which the equipment is to be installed.
These drawings must be approved by the local maritime classification society.
All permanent network links that use STP Ethernet Network cables must be tested and
documented according to ISO standard 11801:2002 class E. Normally testing of the
horizontal network cables will be performed by the installation shipyard in accordance
with their own procedures (must be in accordance with ISO standard 11801:2002 class
E). However, if agreed by contract or Variation Order, testing of the permanent network
cables can be performed by Kongsberg Maritime. Refer to Kongsberg STP Ethernet
Network Cable Test Procedure (document number 346277) or Kongsberg Fibre Ethernet
Network Cable Test Procedure (document number 357853).

Kongsberg Maritime AS accepts no responsibility for any damage or injury to the

system, ship or personnel caused by drawings, instructions or procedures not prepared
by Kongsberg Maritime.

Cable installation

Cable types
Shielded twisted pair cable (10/100/1000Base-T)
Each STP (shielded twisted pair) cable contains four pairs (eight multi-stranded copper
wires). All eight wires are connected for use with the standard RJ45 connector. S/STP
(screened/shielded twisted pair) is recommended.
A node connected to a switch port uses a 1:1 configured cable. A node connected to a
node or a switch connected to a switch needs a cable with crossed RX and TX lines
provided the switch port is not supplied with a crossing switch that can be activated.

Fibre optic cable (10/100/1000Base-F)

Each fibre cable contains four fibres. A (full duplex) fibre link uses two fibres, one for
transmitting and one for receiving data. The remaining two fibres are spare.

STP or fibre optic cables

The type of cabling chosen for your design depends on a number of factors.
STP is less expensive than fibre optic and should be used unless one or more of the
following conditions are true:
• The cable length between switches and nodes exceeds 100 m.
• The network cable must pass through extremely noisy environments.
• The network ties together different equipment areas having voltage differences
between their ground references.
• Hazardous-area requirements demand use of fibre optic cables.

Cable installation

Maximum cable lengths

Twisted pair cable (10/100/1000Base-T)
Maximum distance of point-to-point links is a maximum cable length of 100 metres
including patch cables.
Caution
Do not exceed the maximum STP cable length of 100 metres. Use fibre
links in such cases.

Fibre optic cable (10/100/1000Base-F, multi mode)

Maximum distance for point-to-point links and corresponding data are as follows:
Speed (MB) Distance Wavelength Mechanical properties
10Base-SX OM1 2000 metres full and half duplex 850 nm 62.5/125 µm
100Base-SX OM1 2000 metres full duplex 850 nm 62.5/125 µm
1000Base-SX OM1 350 metres full duplex 850 nm 62.5/125 µm
1000Base-SX OM3 1000 metres full duplex 850 nm 50/125 µm

Cable handling
Caution
During transport, cable laying and pulling into the protective conduit, the
cables must not be sharply bent with a radius lower than the recommended
values or twisted in any way. The cable must only be pushed/pulled by
hand, not by machine. (See technical specifications for minimum allowed
bending radius).

Cable routing and protection

To reduce noise problems and obtain long life of the network the following
recommendations should be followed:
• The two process networks A and B must use separate cables. They should follow
different paths or routes to reduce the risk of being simultaneously damaged. The
administrative network has no such restriction.

170083/P 7
Kongsberg Maritime Network

• The fibre optic cable can be laid together with all types of other cables. Patch cables
and twisted pair cables must be put at least 0.15 metres away from high voltage cables
(up to 10 kV) or be put in a steel tube (wall thickness > 1.5 mm) when installed
close to highly EMI generating devices like radio transmitters, sonars, radars,
cyclo-converters, etc.
• For mechanical protection in harsh environments, the network cables should be laid
in a protective conduit, for example aluminium conduit, galvanized steel conduit or
flexible metallic conduit Pg-21.
• Where cables are laid on the floor, for example just before entry into a cabinet, cable
trays must be used in order to prevent the possibility of physical damage being caused
by personnel accidentally stepping on the cables.
• The fibre optic cable should have a sufficient slack in both ends to allow installation
and termination inside NDUs.

Cable termination

Cable termination

Plug-in connectors are used where appropriate to easily disconnect a cable for service
purposes or to easily reconfigure the network layout. Fixed connectors are used in other
cases.
Figure 1 shows interconnections using shielded twisted pair (STP) in more detail. In the
process station a patch panel with field cable termination blocks is shown along with a
ready-made patch wire with RJ-45 modular plug in both ends. This, in turn, is connected
directly to the RCUs. In the network distribution unit (NDU), a patch panel is shown
with field cable termination blocks and patch wires to the switch. For fibre optic field
signals, a fibre switch is used together with a fibre patch panel.

Connector types
RJ45
RJ45 connectors are used for plug-in connecting STP network cables to equipment such
as nodes, switches, computers and patch panels.

ST, LC or SC (fibre optics)

ST, LC or SC connectors are used for connecting fibre optic network cables to a fibre
patch panel and a fibre switch.

Patch panel
Patch panels contain an array of plug-in sockets. Field cables can be fixed terminated
with all their pairs of wires or single fibres to the back side of these sockets. Patch cables,
which are short cables with a plug-in connector at both ends, are used for connecting
between the patch panel sockets and switches.
Patch panels are used to configure network routs both when designing the network and
when rerouting signal paths if a fibre or STP pair is damaged.

Terminating STP cables

(10/100/1000Base-T)
Figure 2 shows a field cable termination blocks in more detail. An inserted cable is
indicated in the right-hand position. The blocks are typically soldered to a printed
circuit board.

Note
Each STP field cable shall be tested according to Kongsberg STP Ethernet Network
Cable Test Procedure (document no. 346277). The test results shall be documented.

Terminating fibre optic cables

(10/100/1000Base-F)
Fibre optic cables should ideally be delivered in required length ready with ST, LC
or SC connectors in both ends.
Termination of fibre optic cables shall be performed by certified personnel only. Each
fibre has to be tested for reflections and damping (loss). The test results must be
documented according to ISO standard 11801:2002 class E. Refer also to Kongsberg
Fibre Ethernet Network Cable Test Procedure (document no. 357853).

Cable screen
Overall shield:
As a main rule overall shield shall be connected to the PE bar; however, if the cable has
armour, the armour shall be connected to the PE bar and the shield shall be connected
to the IE bar.

Inner shield(s):
The inner/pair shield shall be connected to the IE bar. The inner shield shall be insulated
in relation to the overall shield. Inner shield shall be connected to the IE bar within the
Kongsberg Maritime enclosure and shall be left insulated in all field instruments.

Twisted pair (10/100/1000Base-T)

The outer cable screen has to be grounded inside the cabinet. Grounding is done by
means of shielded cable glands (MARCON) or EMC MCTs at the point of entry into
the cabinet.
A small section of the outer (overall) sheath has to be removed so that the outer (overall)
screen is exposed where the cable passes through the shielded cable gland (MARCON)
or EMC MCT as shown in Figure 6.

0000

0000

The end of the outer (overall) screen is to be dismantled and connected to the patch
panel cable clamp as shown in Figure 6. Maintain the cable wires as twisted pairs when
connecting them to the patch panel terminals.
Note
It is of the utmost importance that the cable pairs are kept as twisted pairs in order to
prevent possible crosstalk and/or noise on the lines.

Fibre cable (10/100/1000Base-F)

If the fibre cable is screened/armoured, the screen/armour must be terminated in EMC
cable glands. If the cable has no screen/armour, standard cable glands can be used.
The outer cable screen, if applicable, is to be grounded in both ends. Grounding is
done by means of shielded cable glands (MARCON) or EMC MCTs at the point of
entry into the console/cabinet. Inner cable screen(s), if applicable, is to be terminated
together with the outer screen.

1.3 Requir ements for identification of pr oduct type with cer tificate
The product is to be provided with visible marking, giving at least the following information:

 manufacturer's name or trade mark

type designation under which the product is type approved
 number of pairs and cross-section.
The marking is to be carried out in such a way that it is visible, legible and indelible throughout the anticipated life
of the product, and that the marks can be traced back to the type approval certificate.

1.4 Test r equir ements

The tests are to be according to the relevant parts of table of type tests, see Sec.3.

1.4.1 How to pick out test samples

The DNV surveyor at the responsible approval centre shall normally choose two variants of each cable type to be
covered by the type approval, according to the list in Sec.3 of the application form (normally the smallest and the
largest).

1.4.2 Pr oduction sample test (PST)

The production sample test is performed as random tests at suitable intervals in order to ensure that products from
subsequent production conform to result of type tests, ensuring "equal production". These tests are normally
carried out by the manufacturer unless stated on the type approval certificate.

1.4.3 Routine tests (RT)

The routine tests constitute the final production control and the manufacturers standard RT are to be described in
the submitted documentation. These tests are normally carried out by the manufacturer unless stated on the type
approval certificate.

1.4.4 Test sample and gener al under standings

Tests for communication cables are normally done one 100m length of cable, unless otherwise specified.

Additional tests as specified as potential tests in IEC 61156-1 and IEC 61156-5 may be accepted and added to the
certificate if this is of interest. Among these are for instance solar radiance test and salt mist, for cables that
possibly may be recommended for use outside.

170083/P 29
With regard to testing of return loss and impedance, this is mandatory tests, one may test item no 13 and 14a or 14b
in Sec.3.

2. Sheath Dimension
The nominal sheath thickness (Dt) is defined as follows:

Sheath thickness Dt = 0.04˜˜Df + 0.4 mm with a minimum thickness of 0.7 mm.

Df is the diameter under the sheath.

The mean value of the thickness, and the thickness at any point, shall satisfy the prescriptions given in 7.6.2 of IEC
60092-350.

1.3 Requir ements for identification of pr oduct type with cer tificate
The product is to be provided with visible marking, giving at least the following information:

– manufacturer’s name or trade mark

– type designation under which the product is type approved
– type and number of fibres.
The marking is to be carried out in such a way that it is visible, legible and indelible throughout the
anticipated life of the product, and that the marks can be traced back to the type approval certificate.

1.4 Mechanical and envir onmental type tests

The tests are to be in accordance with the relevant parts of table of type tests, see Appendix 2.

1.4.1 How to pick out test samples

The DNV surveyor at the responsible approval centre shall normally choose two variants of each cable
type to be covered by the type approval, according to the list in Sec.2 of the application form (normally
the smallest and the largest).

1.4.2 Pr oduction sample test (PST)

The production sample test is performed as random tests at suitable intervals in order to ensure that
products from subsequent production conform to result of type tests, ensuring "equal production".
These tests are normally carried out by the manufacturer unless stated on the type approval certificate.

1.4.3 Routine tests (RT)

The routine tests constitute the final production control and the manufacturer’s standard RT is to be
described in the submitted documentation. These tests are normally carried out by the manufacturer
unless stated on the type approval certificate.

2. Sheath Dimension
The nominal sheath thickness (Dt) is defined as follows:

Sheath thickness Dt = 0.04˜˜Df + 0.5 mm with a minimum thickness of 1.0 mm.

Df is the diameter under the sheath.

The mean value of the thickness, and the thickness at any point, shall satisfy the descriptions given in
4.9.3 of IEC 60092-350.
