This syllabus includes topics required by the state science standards and covered in most first year biology courses at
the high school level. The chapters follow the Glencoe Science Biology Textbook available in each science classroom.

UNITS, CHAPTER, AND APPROXIMATE TIMELINE:

Unit 1 (Ch 1) Study of Life and Introduction to Science 2 Weeks

Unit 2 (Ch 2-5) Ecology 4 weeks
Unit 3 (Ch 6-8) Biochemistry 3 weeks
Unit 4 (Ch 9) Cell Biology 5 weeks
Unit 5 (Ch 10-11) Cell Reproductions/Mendelian Genetics 3 weeks
Unit 6 (Ch 12-13) Cell and Molecular Genetics 5 weeks
Unit 7 (Ch 18-19) Microbiology 2 weeks
Unit 8 (Ch 14-17, 21-23) Evolution, Organization of Life and Plants 3 weeks
Unit 9 (Ch 32-37) Human Biology/Anatomy 4 weeks

REGULAR CLASS ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS: Labs may not be available for make-up
as laboratory supplies may be perishable and limited in quantity. Group discussions are not reproducible.
Assignments missed during unexcused absences will result in a zero. For excused absences, 2 days for each day
of absence will be given for assignments and tests to be made up. Students are responsible for completing all
assignments regardless of whether in attendance or not and must make a concerted effort to do so. If a student
is absent the day before a test, they are still required to take the test with the class when they return. If a student
is chronically absent every test day a parent conference will be requested and the situation will be assessed. Students
that take tests with their class may have extra credit opportunities that will not be provided on make-up tests.
Students/parents should speak to teachers regarding extenuating circumstances as soon as possible. (Email is an
excellent way to start this communication).

Late work will be accepted for partial credit. This includes daily class work, reading or notebook assignments, labs,
project assignments, and other work at the discretion of the instructor. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated
and WILL result in a grade of 0. Always come prepared for class, on time, and with appropriate assignments
completed and personal materials needed.
GRADING:
A = 90=100% D = 60-69%
B = 80-89% F = 50-59%
C = 70-79%

The grade will be based on the total number of points accumulated over the quarter and semester from notebooks and
reading assignments, labs and activities, projects, quizzes and test scores. The final exam will be a cumulative semester
final worth no more than 20 percent of the semester grade.

ASSIGNMENTS: Most assignments can be completed in class as part of the regular laboratory exercise. All
assignments will be turned in at the completion of the unit.

GRADING SPECIFICS: Assignments consist of: notebooks, pre-readings, class participation, labs, weekly quizzes,
unit or chapter tests, activities, and teacher handouts.
FINAL SEMESTER GRADE: Each semester grade will be computed from the two-quarter accumulative
points, plus the final exam. The final exam will account for no more than 20 percent of the semester grade.

GRADE REPORTS and STUDENT PROGRESS: Grades will be entered into SKYWARD at the end of each unit.
They will not be entered until after the packet is completed and graded and the test has been taken. Students will
usually be given an opportunity to review the test if possible before it is entered in the grading system
