It doesn’t have to be anything big – it can be something quite simple and mundane, little
details in our day to day lives. One time while in a celebration lunch, I had a can of drink
in my hand, and as I opened it, a word came to me: “...share”. I looked at my friend in
front of me and thought to myself, “Don’t be silly. Why should I offer her this drink?” It’s
not that I didn’t want to share – but there are so many other drinks around! One second
after I had that thought, she turned and asked me, “Do you mind if we share that can? I
don’t think I can finish one.” I know that it might sound like a random coincidence, but
in that moment I somehow understood that, actually, it wasn’t random at all. I should
have followed that prompting to share.
That was one quite insignificant incident, but I realise how often this happens in our
lives – sometimes regarding much bigger, more important issues. God DOES speak to
us... the challenge is to recognise it as such, and to act on it. How many of us have said
something along the line of, “Actually, I did think of doing that”... “I knew I should’ve
done this or that”... “The thought did cross my mind”... “I did wonder if it was God asking
me to do that but was unsure”... etc? We might say these things with regret, but don’t be
discouraged: it’s a sign that, actually, God did speak – we just need to learn to listen
better. Mistakes are part of that learning, just as Samuel mistook God’s voice for Eli’s
(and not just once – three times). Sometimes the worse mistake is when we do nothing,
out of fear of making a mistake... and then we never find out whether that was God
speaking to us or not. Sometimes we need to take the risk, and simply act!
I pray that this week we may listen better to God’s voice and have the courage to follow
it through... you’ll be surprised at what God can do in your life!
