HISTORY

St. Thomas Hospital, Chethipuzha, Changanassery is a health care institution owned and run
by the Archdiocese of Changanassery, started in 1953 by Archbishop Mar Mathew
Kavukattu. Now the hospital grew from 20 beds in the beginning to 400 beds distributed in
12 wards, some of which are general wards and the rest are semiprivate and private rooms
and 38 doctors and 24 departments with CT scan, Doppler scan, Ultrasound scan, EEG,
Endoscope and several other modern facilities. It is noteworthy that many of our doctors are
the leading figures in Kerala in their respective fields. Now this is one of the leading
multispecialty hospitals in central Kerala.
It is our fond ambition to extend the facilities of the most modern medical discoveries both
clinical and diagnostic, to the poor and the marginalized at an affordable rate and easily
reachable distance and reduce the medical bill to the bear minimum and ease their anxieties
and tensions about the family budget.
The CT Scan Centre at St. Thomas Hospital offers a 24/7 emergency setup with the best in
technology and quality of radiology providing medical imaging diagnostics to the In-Patients
including the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Room.

The Multi Slice Computed Tomography scanner from GE is the best in class which produces
detailed images of any organ in a few seconds and provide exquisitely clear 3D images in an
instant, enabling precise diagnosis.

The Service offered by the CT- Scan department is discussed in length in this project.
OPERATION STRATEGY ADOPTED BY THE CT SCAN DEPARTMENT

Operations strategies are the approaches consistent with the organization strategy that is used
to guide the operations function. Operation strategy can have a major influence on the
competitiveness of a firm.
The operation strategies adopted by the St. Thomas Hospital (CT- Scan Department) are:
The technologist begins by positioning you on the CT examination table, usually lying flat on
your back. Straps and pillows may be used to help you maintain the correct position and to help
you remain still during the exam.
If contrast material is used, depending on the type of exam, it will be swallowed, injected
through an intravenous line (IV) or, rarely, administered by enema.
Next, the table will move quickly through the scanner to determine the correct starting position
for the scans. Then, the table will move slowly through the machine as the actual CT scanning
is performed. Depending on the type of CT scan, the machine may make several passes.
You may be asked to hold your breath during the scanning. Any motion, whether breathing or
body movements, can lead to artifacts on the images. This loss of image quality can resemble
the blurring seen on a photograph taken of a moving object.
When the examination is completed, you will be asked to wait until the technologist verifies
that the images are of high enough quality for accurate interpretation.
The CT examination is usually completed within 30 minutes. The portion requiring intravenous
contrast injection usually lasts only 10 to 30 seconds.
1. Accurate report.
2. Provide quality printed reports.
3. Ensure delivery time.
4. Affordable price.
5. Ensure customer satisfaction.

From the flow chart given below and from the calculations it can be understood that, so as
to increase capacity utilization doctors who does private consulting can be approached and
the CT scan machine can be made available to these patients too.
FLOW PROCESS CHART OF THE CT-SCAN DEPARTMENT

Patients are recommended for a CT-scan

By Doctors

Patients fix an appointment for the CT-Scan

The patients are made comfortable in the X-ray bed

The Scan is focussed to the particular body part

The outputs are observed in the computer screen

The patients are given their individual report and

a copy is saved in the system
PRODUCTIVITY PROFILE:

A. LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY
No. of patients treated (per day) = 8
No. of technicians =3
Time each technician works =8

Labour Productivity =
No. of patients treated per day / (No. of technician * hours worked )
= 8/(3*8) = 0.33 Patients/ Machine Hours

B. RAW MATERIAL PRODUCTIVITY

Cost of a CT-Scan report = Rs. 2,500
Total no. of X-Ray sheets used per day =8
Raw material productivity =(8*2500)/8 = Rs 2,500 Income/Day

C. ENERGY PRODUCTIVITY
Units of Energy Consumed per month = 200 Units
Energy Productivity = Patients visiting in a month = 30*8 = 1.2
Energy consumed per month 200
CAPACITY UTILIZATION

The capacity of any production operation refers to the amount of output that can be produced
within a specified time. Capacity planning is a method to calculate machinery and manpower
requirements. Based on the monthly demand, the entrepreneur can determine the daily
production capacity.

The monthly output of the CT – Scan Department in a month

No. of patients /day= 8
No. of patients /month= 8*30 =240
Expected No. of patients (ideally)= 24
Number of patients /month =24*30= 720
Capacity Utilization = Actual Output/ Desired Output = (240/720)*100 = 33.33%
MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

Materials management is an important component of any production set up.

The material mainly used by the department is the X- Ray paper.

MAINTENANCE POLICY

The computer and the CT-Scan machine are inspected once in a month so as to provide accurate
and clear imagery. Hence Preventive Maintenance policy is adopted here. The Maintenance is
usually done during the non-rush (evening) hours.

INVENTORY CLASSIFICATION

As the print is produced specifically for a customer there is no inventory classification.

SUPPLY CHAIN OF CT -SCAN DEPARTMENT

Supply chain consists of the whole activities associated with products and services movement
from raw material stage to final products which are consumable by customers. This movement
includes financial and information flow as well as material flow. In other words, supply chain
is a network consisting of downstream and upstream organizations which are involved in
different processes and activities that create value for end customers in the form of products or
services.

Machines Used
1. CT-Scan Machine
2. Observation Computer
3. X-Ray printer

The Supply Chain strategy followed by the Department is Responsive Supply Chain
Management. Responsive Supply Chain aimed at being responsive and flexible to customer
needs. Uses build to order processes.
PRODUCTION PLANNING OF CT- SCAN DEPARTMENT

Production planning is the planning of production and manufacturing modules in a company

or industry. It utilizes the resource allocation of activities of employees, materials and
production capacity, in order to serve different customers.
Different types of production methods, such as single item manufacturing, batch production,
mass production, continuous production etc. have their own type of production planning.
Production planning can be combined with production control into production planning and
control, or it can be combined and or integrated into enterprise resource planning.

Here the CT-Scan report are exclusively printed for a patient (customer). So as the patient
approaches a CT-Scan report of his body is given.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENT PLANNING PROCESS

As the most important material to be required is X- Ray Paper. The material is supplied by
Ernakulam based company focused on producing X- Ray papers. The hospital will not give a
bulk order to the company they will plan earlier for how much material is required for next
month.

MODERN PRACTICES

The modern practice followed by the hospital is Just-In-Time (JIT). The JIT manufacturing
system is a planning system for manufacturing processes that helps in achieving high-volume
production using the minimal inventories. The system eliminates the inventory of raw
materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods by making them available as and when
required. The items are picked up by the worker and fed directly into the production process.
The finished goods are produced only at the time they are required for sale. The
implementation of the JIT system requires complete transformation of methods of designing
services, assigning responsiblities to workers, and organising work.
