Green Building and Sustainability

Buildings are one of the leading contributors to pollution, most likely air pollution. Most of the

operations done on building construction requires a lot of energy and carbon that results into air pollution

and most of the buildings can’t even up the problem that they made during the construction. Harmonizing

the resources that will last long it is the key for a building to be resource efficient. However, despite of

their goal to even up their mess, some of the companies and homeowner find it unattainable because of

the fact that they can’t comprehend with the cost of these energy-efficient solutions. It’ll require a lot of

investment on these solutions and a lot of time for advocating the standards while being cost effective at

the same time. Factors that are considered on making a building resource efficient are can be improved

by the cooperation of both the architect and the engineer of the site. The key is to minimize the overall

impact on the environment. One of the problems that they may encounter is on how they can reduce the

carbon emission that is coming from the HVAC systems of the building. This solution also includes

educating and advocating for the adoption of solutions that will have a great impact on our environment.

Summary

Recycling the Past to Build the Future

In 1970, there was a four-story, monolithic concrete parking garage built in the city of Tacoma,

Washington called Park Plaza South. It was the savior of the city because of the fact that it provides a

massive lot for shoppers around the city, so that they would not go on urban places to go shopping. The

Tacoma’s location posed a problem because of the fact that they are only 35 miles away from Seattle

where there are jobs that attract the Tacoma’s people from going to Seattle. However Tacoma begins and

innovated early on green buildings, green technology, and green thought leadership that saved their

economic status. It started at the UW Tacoma Campus; they started by cleaning the waterways and

finding new strategies in association with new technologies to be much more effective. On 1990, UW

Tacoma transformed old ware houses into classrooms and created bikes and walk paths from abandoned

railroad beds. As time goes by Tacoma started to repurpose their savior, the Park Plaza South, and re-

born it as Pacific Plaza. During pre-construction they found a bath that serves as irrigation for the plants

at Tacoma and they also used it for their sewerage systems. It’s never too late to begin again. Restore,

reclaim, and reutilize what was there already to lead into success.

Summary

Green Building: Why Waste a Window?

On renovations of structures for energy efficiency purposes one of the commonly targeted to be

renovated are the windows, because of the fact that 15 to 30 percent of the heat load of a structure is

mainly from the windows. It is not only the replacement of window that is cost-effective but it is more cost-

effective to only replace the window films. As of today window films are engineered to be using advanced

technology to deliver energy savings. And aside for being an affordable option to make a structure more

efficient, there are other benefits that we may be having from these films: First is for cooling bills, it may

affect your costs on energy up to 30 percent reduction on cooling your structure, it can also prolong the

life of your windows and turn it into a green window, it also has a UV ray protection that can block up to

99 percent of the UV rays from entering your structure unlike the normal windows that can only block 25

to 50 percent of the UV rays only, and lastly Tax credits because of the tax extender bills for certain

energy-efficient upgrades. Window films are worth it.
