Shed Cost Estimate

Civil Engineering and Architecture

Introduction
I have been hired to design a shed for Woodrow Wilson High School. A shed is
necessary for storage as the school undergoes construction, and this report will cover every
aspect of this shed, including a full cost estimate and transmission load calculations. These are
the constraints for this project:
● 12 by 16 foot footprint
● Concrete pad foundation (6 in. thick)
● 8 foot high walls
● Gable Roof
● Same materials for each wall

The Design
To design this shed I used Autodesk Revit. Revit allows the user to build an extremely
detailed digital rendering of the structure, and I chose this software because it was readily
available to me at school. I designed this shed exactly to the constraints given in this project, as
well as a past shed assignment. Because of this, I never altered any materials and never had to
start a new design process. However, my shed is very cost effective due to the exterior being
made of wood siding, which is very cheap.

Foundation: For this shed, I was required to use a concrete pad

foundation. Concrete foundations are used because they are
extremely stable and long lasting, the concrete pad is very well
suited for the soil in this area.

Total Cost: My total cost for the shed

was $3,482.14. I calculated this using
Microsoft Excel, which allowed me to do
as little math as possible because all I had
to input the unit price and quantity, then
Excel would do the rest. The vast majority
of my parts were found on the Home
Depot website, however some I could only
find at Lowe’s. The most expensive part of
my shed was the walls, which was largely
due to the quantity of materials needed.
The roof was a close second, which
included parts I had not expected to see,
such as Fascia and Drip Edge, which I had
never seen before.
Transmission Load: The transmission load is extremely
important for any building. The transmission load determines
how effective the structure is at trapping heat. The R-value for
my doors was 36.3471, the roof was 57.8546, the door was
2.5873, and the windows were 1.5394. My total transmission
load was 1,361.92, and the highest transmission load was
door.

Conclusion
I had no experience in Revit prior to this project. This
made very intricate parts of the shed such as the wall very
difficult, largely due to the multiple layers and constant
changing of materials to get the desired result. However, without Revit, I think this project would
be nigh on impossible due to the sheer amount of detail and sketching required. If I was not
allowed to use Revit, and instead had to sketch everything out by hand, this project would have
taken significantly longer. As for the cost, my shed ended up being relatively cost efficient.
However, the paint seemed to take up far too much of the total cost, and I feel that spending so
much on paint alone was a waste. Overall, this project has given me a new appreciation for
simple structures because now I am aware of just how much work goes into them.

Cost Analysis
1. The floor cost $671.20, and the majority of that cost
was the concrete.
2. The walls cost $1,333.21, and the majority of that cost
was paint (surprisingly).
3. The opening cost $391.96, and the majority of that
cost was the windows. Results / Conclusions
Design Brief 4. The roof cost $1,085.77, and the majority of that cost
was asphalt shingles.
5. The total cost of my shed was $3,482.14 In the end, the walls cost the most to build, and the majority

This shed is very effective at trapping heat in, with a total
transmission load of 1,361.92. Due to the relatively low
transmission value, there will be less need for heating, thus
saving energy.
