1. Apply clean engine oil to the cylinder liner bore, to the piston rings, and to the outer surface of the
piston.

Note: Be careful not to damage the cylinder liners and/or the crankshaft journals during the
installation of the pistons and the connecting rods.

2. Use Tooling (B) to install piston (2) and the connecting rod in the cylinder liner.

3. The connecting rod and the piston must be installed in the engine with Surface (X) toward the
crankshaft main bearing journal. Surface (Y) must be toward the connecting rod.

Note: Surface (X) is thicker than Surface (Y) .

Note: Surface (X) is chamfered in order to fit the crankshaft.

4. Make sure that the piston crown, the piston skirt, and the piston rod are properly aligned for the
clearance that is required by oil jet tube (3) . This will prevent major engine failure. Refer to
Specifications, "Connecting Rod" and Specifications, "Piston and Rings".

5. Install bolts (1) and the bearing caps. Refer to Specifications, "Connecting Rod" for the correct
tightening procedure.

End By:

a. Install the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove
and Install".
b. Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
c. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
