SUBJECT: Announcement Regarding Implementation of Requirements for UL 1203, Standard

for Explosion-Proof and Dust-lgnition-Proof Electrical Equipment for Use in
Hazardous (Classified) Locations, for Certification of Associated Product Standards

The Third Edition of the Standard for Explosion-Proof and Dust-lgnition-Proof Electrical Equipment for
Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 1203, is intended to be the single document for the
requirements for explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof electrical equipment. UL 1203 already provides
the foundation for explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof requirements for a number of UL hazardous
(classified) location product standards; the product standards either reference UL 1203 or more typically
incorporate the text directly, or both, as appropriate.

When UL 1203 is edited and adopted in accordance with UL’s ANSI-accredited standard development
process, it often takes time before the associated product standards can be revised to reflect the new
terminology in UL 1203. In the interim, separate and perhaps conflicting requirements can exist for
the same product. This presents a challenge to everyone involved.

This situation can not always be avoided. However, in response to inquiries requesting that UL
hazardous (classified) location standards share greater uniformity, UL is currently taking a proactive
step by initiating revisions to UL 1203 that would incorporate a select group of product standards into
UL 1203. For the affected standards, the product information will be included in UL 1203 and the
individual standards would then be withdrawn. This would eliminate multiple and sometimes varying
versions of the same explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof requirements coexisting in multiple
standards.
SUBJECT 1203 -2- AUGUST 23,2002

In other cases, certain product standards will continue to stand alone, but will be harmonized more
closely with the appropriate requirements of UL 1203. This will reinforce the premise that UL 1203 is the
single source for explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof requirements. The overall goal is to have a
common set of requirements for construction and performance for the explosion-proof and dust-
ignition-proof protection techniques where the type of product does not warrant a difference. The
affected standards are as follows:

To be incorporated into UL 1203 To be harmonized with UL 1203

Industrial Control Equipment
. . for Use in Hazardous (Classified)
Locations, UL 698
Electric Heaters for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations,
UL 823
Circuit Breakers and Circuit-Breaker Enclosures for Use in Electric Motors and Generators for Use in Division 1
Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 877 Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 674
Outlet Boxes and Fittings for Use in Hazardous (Classified)
Locations, UL 886
Switches for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 894 Electric Lighting Fixtures for Use in Hazardous (Classified)
Locations, UL 844
Electrically Operated Valves for Use in Hazardous (Classified)
Locations, UL 1002
Receptacle-Plug Combinations for Use in Hazardous
(Classified) Locations, UL I010

These revisions are expected to take some time to complete. In the meantime, UL will, at the request of
a manufacturer, evaluate a product covered by one of the above standards to the requirements in UL
1203 for certain construction and performance requirements. This will provide the manufacturer with
more consistency when producing castings that are used for different products.

Any comments on this announcement should be directed to the attention of the undersigned in writing
within 30 days.

This bulletin should be kept with your copy of the standard.

Questions regarding interpretation of requirements should be directed to the responsible UL Staff.

Please see Appendices A and B of this bulletin regarding designated responsibility for the subject
product categories.

DESIGNATED RESPONSIBILITY FOR UL PRODUCT CATEGORIES

The individuals shown in the following tables are involved with the investigation of products covered
under the subject categories of Appendix A. The Primary Designated Engineer (shown in
UPPERCASE letters) coordinates the establishment and uniform interpretation of UL requirements
applicable to the product categories. The Designated Engineers (shown in lowercase letters) work
with the Primary Designated Engineer to interpret requirements and maintain standards.

Should you have questions regarding any adopted requirements that affect your product, you are
encouraged to contact the individual at the office to which you normally submit your products.

The Standards Technical Panel (STP) Chairman for the subject categories is Jerry Kopstein at UL’s
Northbrook Division. The STP Chairman oversees the significant interpretations made by the Primary
Designated Engineer and arbitrates any differences regarding interpretation of UL requirements.
