India too are silent.

If the UPA government and its Home

the safety of the Sikhs in the Valley against
the rising threats from the Pakistan-
supported terrorists, why has it been
silent in the case of the Kashmiri Pundits
and will the government ever give
supportive safety to the ousted Kashmiri
Pundits who have been forced to live as
if in an asylum in their own country since
more than a decade? And if the state of
affairs of the Kashmiri Pundits is any
indication, how can it be different for the
Sikhs and the non-Muslims living in the
State and so how can the country be
comforted with the hollow words of the
Home Minister?

government and its Home Minister are
complacent about these menacing
developments that continue to wreak
havoc across the State. It is therefore,
important to know, understand, learn and
even act upon from how China deals with
similar problem of the Muslim Uighurs.
CHINA'S RESPONSE TO UIGHUR
UNREST - History says that after
triumphing over the Byzantine, Romans

especially in China's north-western
Xinjiang region, where more than half the
population is Uighur (around 15-20
million, which is barely 1.6% of China's
total population of over 1.3 billion).
Reports inform that the rising moves by
these Uighurs is seen by Chinese
authorities as separatist moves and has
dealt with Uighurs very, very sternly, to the
extent that a section of US-based Human
Rights groups have deemed these action
as 'crushing campaign of religious
repression', which the Chinese
authorities have denied.
However, it is no secret that the
Chinese authorities have never allowed
the Uighur community to strengthen any
separatist moves. As late as March-April
2009, agency reports informed about the
worst ethnic violence in China wherein
China had reported that at least 140
people had been killed and 828 injured
in riots in the city of Urumqi, capital of the
oil and gas-rich far western Muslim
region of Xinjiang.

agency had even quoted a government
statement saying that the violence was
"a pre-empted, organized violent crime.
It is instigated and directed from abroad
and carried out by outlaws in the country."
Will the weak-hearted Indian
politicians ever have the courage to take
a leaf from China's political sternness
against any separatist moves in any part
of its State? Six decades of Indian history
has only proved that Indian government
has been playing a dangerous vote-bank
politics with the Muslims in general and
the vain "jaw-jaw" with the Pakistan
government over the Kashmir issue
since the past more than a decade.
Recently, Pakistan has been
severely lashed by the worst floods in over
seven decades. India may be a good
Samaritan neighbor and did offer an aid
of over $5 million, which the haughty
troubled neighbor simply refused to
accept, so the UPA government and its
weak-kneed Prime Minister were reported
to be literally begging the Pakistan
government to accept the aid, which it did
only after pressurized by the USA.

Kashmir', through covert means. Quoting
from the Organiser, RSS mouthpiece the
report said: "The Islamisation of Kashmir
is a dangerous game. This was on for
the last two decades. First they (the
Muslims in Kashmir) started changing
the names of places and signboards....
They then imposed a ban on cinema
halls, beauty parlours, restaurants and
fashion shops. They asked their women
to wear veil even in schools and offices,"
RSS mouthpiece Organiser states in its
latest issue. And the editorial has said
that even the administration in the state
has become "Islamic".
The editorial in the Organiser has
even said that the development funds
given to the Kashmir state are being
siphoned off by the politicians and part
of the funds are also diverted to the
Islamists' moves of anti-India insurgency'.
The writing on the Kashmiri Wall is
very loud and clear and part of the State
has also almost been taken away by
Pakistan (the Pak occupied Kashmir).
When will the Congress Party and the
UPA government learn the art of
converting the Kashmiri Achilles heel into
an Achilles tendon and begin with a
strong, meaningful politics to once and
for all solve the burning issue of Kashmir
and pave the way for a prosperous and
invincible nation that can also challenge
China?

settle down as progressive persons, but

their nefarious games, played and funded
by Pakistan. Why don't you see the game?"
The Kashmiri Hindu students, like
Radhika Kaul (just about to leave for Yale
University) asked why none from Jammu
or Ladakh supported what they said and
wanted to be distanced from all their
claims. "Why none of you ever, even in
passing, refer to the pains and
aspirations of these two areas which you
think form an essential part of your so
called 'Azad Kashmir'?" "Your 'Azad
Kashmir' remains a small, marginalized
cry of a section of stone pelters in the
valley alone," said Aditya Kaul. Utpal Kaul
- born, brought up and educated in
Srinagar - reminisced about his student
days, about his Muslim teachers and the
tradition of "Dal Cross" and "Wooler
Cross" by girl students too who had pretty
good hockey and tennis teams. "Where
has all that vanished? Why do you want
to be just confined to a small area of the
valley? Give leadership to the Indian
Muslims. Where is the space of Indian
Muslims on your radar?" Prof Fouzia too
became emotional and said: "We always
had the tradition of mosques and
temples existing side by side." To this,
Aditya wanted to know, where have all
the temples gone now? Thousands of
them have been demolished and graffiti
in foul language written against Hindus
on their half-burnt walls. Why none of
them ever protested against such
happenings?
Editors' interaction with the
students hinged on how political
aspirations are taking a turn in the valley.
Chandan Mitra of the Pioneer, Rajesh
Kalra of the Times Group and Shoma
Chaudhry from Tehelka tried to
understand and put forth their viewpoints
about Kashmir's problems and their
solutions. Shoma spoke about the new
wave of political demands in the valley
and termed stone pelting too as an
expression of anger. Chandan predictably
took the nationalist line and tried to explain
how the Indian democracy is the best
framework. "Be part of a larger Indian
milieu and everything can be sorted out,"
he emphasized. Large sections of Muslim
students, apart from those who came from
Islamic University nodded in affirmation.
Rajesh Kalra asked students about their
academic pursuits and their dreams. He
said that unless they joined the
mainstream of a struggle within the Indian
framework how could they think they could

excel in their lives.
The thrilling part was the arrival of

parties. Harsimrat Kaur Badal was at her
eloquent best. She narrated emotionally

during the Khalistan movement. How every
Sikh was a suspect, how young Sikhs
were killed as suspects by the security
forces and the massacre of 1984. "But
gradually we all felt separatism was not
an answer, it gave nothing but blankness,
a black hole. Today Punjab youths are in
the grip of drugs and all sorts of negative
traits, a direct fallout of the insurgency.
Punjab lost its vibrant, dynamic youth in a
movement that was self-defeating." "And
listen," she turned a tigress, "I am not from
the Congress or the BJP, but I am an
Indian and as an Indian I must clearly tell
you that till the last Indian is alive, no one
will ever allow Kashmir to secede from
us. It's an integral part of us, of India." The
conference room rose to hail her with
roaring claps. The voices of "azadi'' had
no answer.
Neeraj Shekhar asked: "How many
of you have voted in the last elections?"
Islamic University students said in
unison: "No one." "Why?" asked Neeraj.
They said: "Because the elections are
always rigged, so we have no faith in
them." This was contested again by
Manzoor Yusuf, who said 61% of
Kashmiris voted in the elections. "That
means yo do not represent the majority."
Aditya pointed out: "A known separatist
leader, Bilal Lone, contested the election
and lost his deposit. It means the majority
of Kashmiris do not like separatists."
Priya Dutt said in her inimitable style:
"Why on earth you declare first that you are
not an Indian and then ask for more? How
can one come on a dialogue table with a
baggage of preconceived notions and then
begin with riders? We are with you, we
understand your pains and sorrows, we
share your grief and demands for justice,
but that can be met only under an Indian
constitutional framework. And no one, no
party or ideology or shade of belief, can
ever give you 'azadi'. Take it today as firmly
as possible."
Anurag Thakur, the young turk from
Himachal who is also the president of
Himachal Cricket Association and national
president of the BJP's youth wing, spoke
from the heart: "We are with you on every
issue that creates pain or anguish, but as
Indians. Nothing can ever be discussed
beyond the parameters of our Indianness.
We are talking to you not because you are
different but because you have always been
a part of us, an inalienable story of a larger
Indian epic." Madhu Yashki narrated his
own story from Andhra Pradesh, where he
too was witness to the demand of a
Telangana state. "It never pays to be an
extremist, trust me. Our destinies and
dreams are best protected under the
umbrella of our Indianness."
Jayant Chaudhary was candid. "You
want peace, right?" And everyone nodded.
So friends, peace as I read somewhere,
is like lovemaking. You have to keep your
eyes shut and let the process take its
course. Coming on a dialogue table with
preconditions spoils the game. Then he
said: "Tell me why some of you want
'azadi'." The students, voicing separatist

Bangalore, August 21, 2010: The
Bengaluru police filed an affidavit before
the Karnataka high court on Thursday
alleging that controversial People's
Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasar
Madani was trying to form an Islamic
India.
Madani was arrested on Tuesday
for his alleged role in the Bengaluru
serial blasts that had rocked the city on
July 25, 2008. On Wednesday, Madani
had filed an application in the high court
seeking his discharge from the case.
State Public Prosecutor H S
Chandramouli, who filed the state
police's objection to Madani's application,
said it was the longest objection filed in
the state's history. He said the objection,
which forms part of the affidavit filed by
the state police, narrates Madani's
modus operandi and goes on for 57
pages.
Opposing Madani's application
seeking discharge from the case, the
state police say that Madani had dreamt
of converting India into an Islamic nation.

hefty amount of money for the
operation. Madani has been
raising funds from countries in

The government argues that since
the accused was a high-profile person,
the trial against him should be expedited
and a special court should be set up for
this purpose. The state government
claims that it was imperative to complete
the trial as Madani's associates could
destroy evidence against him.

New Delhi, August 20, 2010: The
conduct of social activist Teesta Setalvad,
spearheading a campaign for Gujarat

Supreme Court on Thursday after the
Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing
the riots accused her of interfering with
the trial by threatening a public
prosecutor (PP).
In a report to the court, the SIT said
she threatened to complain to the SC
against the PP for opposing an
application for stay of trial by one Salim
Shaikh. Setalvad had told the prosecutor
on phone that he should have simply
“okayed” the application, the SIT stated.
Referring to her conversation with
Meghaninagar riot case public
prosecutor RC Kodekar, the apex court
Bench noted, “This is serious…we will
not appreciate this at all.”
Setalvad, who was present in the
court, explained that she had called up
the PP regarding a witness, who is a
cancer patient, and that she did not say
anything as alleged. Ending the matter
after her explanation, the Bench of
Justices DK Jain, P Sathasivam and Aftab
Alam imposed a blanket ban on anyone
contacting the PP. It said that only SIT
members and its chairman RK
Raghavan were allowed to provide
information or any help that the
prosecutor might require.
The SIT also submitted a progress
report with regard to the killing of former
Congress MP Ehsaan Jaffri in post-
Godhra riots at Gulbarga Society. With
Chief Minister Narendra Modi named as
one of the 63 accused, the apex court
refused to divulge the details of the sealed
report. However, a copy was supplied to
amicus curiae Prashant Bhushan and
the Bench requested him not to let out
the contents.
With investigations remaining
inconclusive, SIT sought further time to
probe the role of former Gujarat Minister
Gordhan Jhadaphia, against whom the
probe agency has found prima facie
evidence.
Along with him, the SIT has named
as accused two top police officers, MK

riots cases and has nothing to do with

the secrecy and exclusivity of SIT probe

questions over the recent Gujarat High
Court order asking SIT to probe the Ishrat
Jahan fake encounter case. “SIT is not a
standing body… How has the Gujarat HC
referred the case to SIT?” the Bench
asked. Senior advocate and amicus
curiae Harish Salve intervened and
assured the Bench that SIT would move
an appropriate application and ask the
HC to review its order.
Regarding the complaints made by
Setalvad’s NGO, Citizens for Justice and
Peace, the apex court refused to take note
of its objections against the SIT team
comprising Gujarat-cadre officer Ashish
Bhatia. Snubbing Setalvad for doubting
the officer’s integrity, the Bench remarked,
“Let us repose confidence in somebody.
We have full confidence in the SIT
chairman and the amicus curiae.”

he was threatened by IPS officers
accused in the fake encounter case.

Practising yoga really does relax
your mind as well as your body more than
other types of exercise, a new study
claims.
Researchers have found that three
sessions of the exercise a week can help
fight off depression as it boosts levels of
a chemical in the brain which is essential
for a sound and relaxed mind.
Scientists found that the levels of
the amino acid GABA are much higher in
those that carry out yoga than those do
the equivalent of a similarly strenuous
exercise such as walking.
The chemical, GABA, is essential
to the function of brain and central
nervous system and which helps
promote a state of calm within the body.
Low GABA levels are associated
with depression and other widespread
anxiety disorders.
Scientists from the Boston University
School of Medicine, USA, spent 12 weeks
monitoring two groups of healthy
individuals, half of whom walked for three
hours each week, while the other half
spent the same time doing yoga.
Participants brains were scanned
before and after the study using magnetic
resonance spectroscopic (MRS)
imaging to measure GABA levels, while
they were also asked questions about
their psychological wellbeing throughout
the study.
Those who did yoga reported lower
levels of anxiety and increases in their
mood than the walkers.
Professor Chris Streeter said yoga
participants increased feeling of
wellbeing was associated with GABA
levels. He said: "Over time, positive
changes in these reports were
associated with climbing GABA levels."
Prof Streeter called for further
research into using yoga as a treatment
for other forms of mental illness.
Katie Prior, of mental health charity
Mind, welcomed the study.
She said: "Any kind of exercise is
good for improving a person's mood and
self esteem. It makes you feel good and
look good, both of which help with mental
wellbeing.
"Yoga is a relaxing, low impact activity
for people who don't like the thought of
walking or running. It can be done in the
privacy of a person's own home, or people
can join a class where they can meet
others – this is a great way to meet people,
especially for those who may suffer from
isolation and loneliness."
The research is good news for yoga
which along with pilates was criticised
earlier this month for not pushing the
body as hard as other exercises.
The University of Wisconsin said
that it fell short of what was considered
an all-round workout.
They found that while yoga did
improve strength, endurance, balance
and flexibility, they burned very few
calories - suggesting they had not
pushed their bodies hard enough to gain
substantial aerobic improvements.
In fact, researchers found that a
typical class used 144 calories in 55
minutes - the same amount burned
during a slow walk.
Even power yoga, which requires
participants to perform poses in quick
succession, was found to burn only about
237 calories per class and to boost the
heart rate to only 62 per cent of the maximum
that constitutes a light aerobic workout.
Dr. Avtar Singh Shastry in a joint press
conference addressed in the national
capital declared, “If Sikhs are forced to
leave the Valley, then the supporters of
the anti-national tormentor Muslims will
be treated the same way in other parts of
the country”.
In a press statement they said
“Sikhs have always stood against evil.
Sikhs are in minority in the Valley, but
those that have threatened them should
be aware of the fact that Muslims are in
minority in other parts of the country. The
treatment meted out to Sikhs in the Valley
will be reciprocated and paid back in the
same coin to the supporters of the anti-
national tormentor Muslims in other
parts of the country. Punjab, Haryana and
Delhi may be the areas where such
constituents will be in trouble if Sikhs and
other minorities are made to face any
problem in the Valley.

different race and a different "kaum" unlike
Indians. I said: "Read at least Sheikh
Abdullah's biography, 'Atishe Chinar', in

Kauls and Bhatts this side, exiled from
their homes, and Rainas, Kauls and
Bhatts on the other side. Why the divide
just because one has a different way of
worship?"
Ram Madhav, national executive
member of the RSS, shared his views
and took difficult questions with aplomb,
asserting the age-old unity of Jammu &
Kashmir with India. "We can never think
to have Kashmir separated from India at
any cost," he asserted. "We would like
every person in J&K to prosper and have
a government of his choice within the
framework of the Indian Constitution."
This dialogue could happen
because Prof Siddiq Wahid and Prof
Fouzia Kazi were among the believers in
resolving issues through talks. I wish I
were a student of Dr Fouzia, who was so
articulate and spoke with great maturity
and élan. The same goes for Prof Wahid.
The students were brilliant, and put forth
their views assertively and decently. The
dialogue has convinced us that there are
people in the valley who believe in
sharing the views rather than stone
pelting and killing. No bullet can ever find
a solution to a complex problem and
building bridges in spite of all hurdles
and challenges remains the course of a
civil society. That has to be supported
from both sides, though.
Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee gave
his life in Srinagar for the complete
integration of Kashmir with the rest of
India. That a thinktank named after him
would carry forward the dialogue in
Srinagar and in Delhi with those who
have a different opinion is a landmark
event. That was what Bal Apte, the
President of the organization, said,

bind Jammu & Kashmir inseparably with
Bharat Vasrha. "We never imagined an
India without Kashmir and will never do

anonymous letters from Islamic militants
asking them to either embrace Islam and
join the protests against civilian killings
or pack up and leave the Valley. The
60,000-strong Sikh community is the
single largest minority group in the Valley.
An organisation of Kashmiri Sikhs
said that several community members
have received these letters. "Community
members have received unsigned letters
at various places," said All Party Sikh
Coordination Committee (ASCC)
coordinator Jagmohan Singh Raina. He
said the community has decided to stay
put and fight these "evil designs" at a
meeting in Srinagar on Thursday.

residential school for girls founded by
late Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in
Kandhamal district has received a threat
that its authorities would meet the same
fate as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader
who was killed in 2008.
"The caller, who rang up yesterday
(on Thursday), accused the
management of the school,
Shankaracharya Sanskrit Kanyashram,
of beating up girls on the pretext of
maintaining discipline," police said.
"I received two telephone calls, one
at 3:41 pm and another at 4:20 pm
yesterday. The caller threatened me and
the headmistress Rita Kesri to run the
Kanyashram properly or face the fate of
Saraswati," the school's Managing
Secretary Kabi Chandra Nath told PTI
over phone.

have enhanced security around the

lodged an FIR at Tumudibandha police

woman by birth and a disciple of Swami
Vivekananda. She was a great Social
worker and was the first person to
encourage women’s education in Bengal
with a missionary zeal. Bharathi secured
an interview with sister Nivedita Devi.

India Abroad’s Hindu Unity Day in

Anti-Hindu Attitude

New York, August 23, 2010: The
Hindu Human Rights Watch group has
called upon the Hindu American
community to take action against India
Abroad for it deliberate non-coverage of
Hindu Unity Day held on August 8, 2010
at Ganesha Temple Auditorium at New
York City.
This event was attended by about
1200 Hindu Americans mainly from New
York City with many distinguished guests
from US and India including Dr.
Subramanian Swamy, Mr. Tapan Ghosh,
Shri Anand Shankar Pandya, Dr. Sudhir
Parikh and several other distinguished
guests. The people chose to participate
in this event even though it was a bright
summer day and there are several
activities to go to.
It is not the event this year, but for
many years India Abroad chose not to
cover this event in spite of great
participation from the community. The
same India Abroad that covers a biased
India Workshop conference at MIT in
Boston just few weeks ago with full page
coverage could not find reporters to report
this event even to their New York City (or
north eastern) edition. The same India
Abroad that interviews Syed Shahabuddin
would not bother to cover Mr. Tapan
Ghosh of Hindu Samhati visiting US and
who is leading a battle of survival at great
risk to the life of himself and his family in
the areas of West Bengal bordering the
Bangla Desh against Islamists.
It is not difficult to get American
Congress to pass a resolution on
Kashmir than to get India Abroad to write
about the plight of Kashmiri Hindus. It is
possible to get a South Asian report by
Hindu American Foundation endorsed by
several leading congressmen and
senators on the atrocities and genocide
of Bangla Deshi Hindus than to get India
Abroad to cover the immense tragedy that
is going on.
There are about 2 million Indian
Americans of which overwhelming
number (perhaps about 80-90%) are
Hindu Americans. Most subscribers of
India Abroad comes from this community.
Overwhelming amount of advertisement
revenue comes from Hindu American
community. Should Hindu Americans be
silent on this patent bias? Should
coverage of concerns, issues and
suffering of any community be
dependent on what community that is
affected?
It is time for the community that is
facing existential threat around the world,
mainly from Islamic countries, where the
population of Hindus reduced from 25%
to less than 1% in Pakistan and from
30% to less than 10% in Bangla Desh
and 350,000 Kashmiri Hindus from India
living in squalid camps for last 18 years
to rise up and question why they should
fund such biased institutions? It is time
to inquire India Abroad reveal the
backgrounds of their reporters and
demand that their background be in
proportion to the revenues they generate
from the communities. (Note:
Communists/Marxists cannot be
counted as from Hindu background for
their open bias).
The HHRWG has given 30 days
notice to the paper before they start a
concerted action in the same way it was
done in countries like Trinidad.

Sanatana Dharma Foundation
(SDF) has successfully completed a two-
day Hindu Unity Day in the DFW Metroplex
for its third consecutive year. In this
annual event, individuals who are striving
to protect and safeguard Sanatana
Dharma are honored with the “Dharma
Raksha Kshatriya” award.
Previous award recipients include
Dr. Subramaniam Swamy and Dr. S.
Kalyanaraman. This year’s award
recipients included Dr. Kosla Vepa and
Dr. Kusum Vyas.
In the first day of the program was
held as dinner program/seminar on
August 21, 2010. Karishma
Himatsinghani, a noted Radio was the
MC of the evening and Kalyan
Viswanathan, the President of Sanatana
Dharma Foundation welcomed the
audience. The program started with
Prayers led by Uma Narayanan. The
audience was engaged by three
speakers who have been active in
scholarship and preservation of
Sanatana Dharma.
Dr. S. Kalyanaraman in his keynote
address gave insights into recent
scholarship concerning the Indus Valley
civilization. SDF was honored to be
facing youth who are growing up in a
culture with significantly different values
than that of their parent’s religious and
cultural backgrounds. Multiple
opportunities for further partnership and
collaboration arose with numerous
avenues for networking amongst different
Hindu groups for the purpose of
transmission of Sanatana Dharma to the
next generation.

by Gopal Ponangi, Director of Sanatana
Dharma Foundation had notable
speakers like Rajesh Verma from Sewa

Viswanathan, President of Sanatana
Dharma Foundation thanked all the
attendees for showing up and supporting
the cause of Hindu Unity. He said that
during the discussions with various
people several new initiatives have paved
way and SDF will act on them.

lease towards end of this year, Indian

nuclear-powered attack submarine.
Nerpa quietly left its base on
Russia's Pacific coast earlier this week,

acceptance trials spread over several
weeks before the Akula-II class
submarine is commissioned into Indian
Navy as INS Chakra.
Nerpa's lease flows from an
agreement inked between New Delhi
