CHARACTERISTICS OF RECEPTOR

1. Made of large CHONs numbering from 2,000 to 100,000 pert target cell.
2. May be located
-in or on cell membrane (fixed receptor)
- in the cytoplasm(mobile)
-in the nucleus (mobile)
3. The number of receptors found on or in target cell are not constant. There can be:
 “down regulation of receptors”
-binding or hormone causes decrease in number of receptors due to:
>inactivation of receptor
>decreases production of molecules needed to produce receptors
-effect: decrease responsiveness of target tissue

 “up- regulation of receptors”

-presence of hormones induces formation of more receptor molecules in target cell.
-effect: target tissue progressively becomes more sensitive to effects or hormones.
