    Integral cell adhesion molecules (ICAMs), including cadherins, play an essential role in cell recognition and aggregation during embryonic development and postnatal life. Cadherins are prerequisite for the development of other cohesion mechanisms and are important for morphogenesis and differentiation. For example, E-cadherin is important for epithelial cell adhesion through desmosomes, while N-cadherin is involved in adhesion of nerve, muscle and eye lens cells, and P-cadherin functions in placenta and epidermal cells.

    attachment to substrate in postnatal life how recognition takes place. Very little is known.

    PRINCIPAL CLASS OF ICAMs ARE THE “CADHERINS” FUNCTIONS:

    1. Are prerequisite for development of other cohesional mechanisms, w/out these cadherins, formation of junctional
    complexes(desmosomes) cannot occur
    -they are integral proteins.
    2. theyare important in morphogenesis and differentiation.

    Ex.

    E- cadherin: epithelial cell belt desmosomes

    N- Cadherin: nerve, muscle, lens of eyes

    P- cadherin: placenta and epidermal cells
