2.3 3D Side Panel

Radan CAD/CAM 2016 introduced a 3D ‘Side Panel’ that allows the user to quickly analyse the 3D model on the screen. This can be useful
when importing third party assemblies and removing parts that are not of interest. To speed up common operations, most functions are now
also available inside the 3D window using context menus:

In addition to this, the software now shows details of the objects near to the cursor in tool tips:

2.3.1 Converting Parts

Using the context menus, a part can now be converted quickly to editable sheet metal features. The function to ‘Convert to Sheet Metal’ is
available when not in Summary View.

This currently only works with parts that do not have forms or hems.

2.4 3D Graphics
Radan 3D is now using a more modern version of OpenGL, which improves support for more graphics cards. At the same time, the
performance of highlighting has been greatly improved, making working in 3D and selecting objects more efficient.

2.4.1 Axes Colours

The colours used to depict the 3 axes in 3D are now user definable from the ‘View Settings’ dialog:

2.5 Profiling
2.5.1 Common Cutting and Tags
Radan 2017 now offers improved support for tags on common cut groups of parts. Automatic tooling will now add midline tags on the periphery
of the common cut group of parts – not yet on the common cuts themselves. However, these can be added manually.

Automatic order and manual order now support mid-line tags on common cut groups of parts, and also corner tags on the non-common-cut
slots of common cut groups of parts.

2.6 Punching
2.6.1 Floating Scrap Detection
To make sure the NC program that is made doesn’t create floating scrap on the machine tool, a new check can be run in order mode. The
function can be started from the ‘Order’ menu:

The software will then analyse the individual hits in the job and see whether any floating scrap appears at any point. Floating scrap becomes
dangerous if it is not subsequently removed using a machine stop, chute or pick operation.

The software then highlights the lines in the order text that produce the floating scrap as shown below. When the line is selected, a message
shows details about the first piece of floating scrap that is generated:

Graphically, the floating scrap is marked with small red crosses:

And when zoomed in, red boxes show the areas:

2.7 Nest Projects

Following on from setup sheets, the nest project reports can now be easily designed using the new report writer that is included in Radan
CAD/CAM. Access to the nest project reports is still the same icon:

2.7.1 Nest Project Reports

The reporting engine has been designed to be future proof and may contain some terminology that is different from what you are used to. In
general, the information that is available is much richer than before and allows for comprehensive, multifaceted reports to be created in
minutes.

17 | P a g e
Radan 2017 Release Notes – Radan CAD/CAM

The new style reports will replace the current PDF reports, which will no longer be supported as of Radan CAD/CAM 2018.

2.7.2 Nest Project Templates

To make it easier to create new nest projects with settings that suit the upcoming task, a nest project can now be saved as a template using the
‘Project Properties’ dialog:

18 | P a g e
Radan 2017 Release Notes – Radan CAD/CAM

This template can then be selected the next time a new project is created:

2.8 General CAM

2.8.1 Nesting
The true shape nesting engine Radnest has been further enhanced, typically where a low number of different parts are concerned. In these
cases, where the nester has fewer options to combine, the nester now tries more orientations, which can result in a higher material yield. Some
examples of improved nests are displayed below:

2.8.2 Automatic Order Style Editor

Automatic order styles can now be configured using a new easy-to-use dialog, instead of plain text. The new editor is the default option for
modifying auto order styles. The text editor can still be accessed if required. To bring up the editor:

The dialog has a clear layout and uses right-click and drag-and-drop to configure an auto-order style:

3 Radbend

3.1 Design Result Switch

Radbend 2017 has an improved way to show and set the state the part is in.

When a part is imported into Radbend the part has a specific design radius and a setback given by the CAD system. In Radbend this state is
called “with design parameters” – the part is treated as if the 3D and unfold are already correct.

When tooling is selected (or changed) to the model, Radbend calculates new values for Radius and setback and applies these values to the
model; this state is called “with result setback”. The part is now stretched, fingerstops are adjusted and part will simulate with the new values.
The unfolding is also according to the last changes.

The user can switch back to design values at any time. When the button turns “orange” the part is in a different mode than what the default way
of working is set to.

24 | P a g e
Radan 2017 Release Notes – Radbend

3.1.1 Set up Design//Result defaults

The default behaviour of new programs can be set in the cadconnection utility. This replaces all individual tool, fingerstop and simulation
settings where this was previous located (per machine).

Note: Radbend will not show the result radius in the GUI and in 3D, only its effect on the unfolding and bending program.

The result radius is always transferred to the native Radan models, but not to imported models. Imported models can be “converted to
sheetmetal”.

3.1.2 Adjust Bends using Tooling Information

This new function in 3D Radan uses the Radbend technology database to adjust bend information in 3D parts. This function is available only
when Radbend is installed. It uses default values for pressbrake and tooling without preparing the bending program.

25 | P a g e
Radan 2017 Release Notes – Radbend

3.2 Holes Near Bends

A new function allows the user to check for holes near bends. Holes or cutouts may distort when they are too close to a bend.

Holes in the danger zone will be highlighted in red, a message is displayed and the danger zone is projected on top of the sheet with orange
lines.

Radan 2017 Release Notes – Radbend

3.3 Hemming
3.3.1 Maximum force for hemming
Some hemming tools may have two different maximum allowed press forces; one for normal bending and one for hemming (e.g. when the flat
part of the tool is used and not the tip). There is now an extra field for the maximum allowed force for a tool when used for hemming.

3.3.2 Setback for hemming feedback

Specific setback values that apply for hemming can now be sent back to the Radan 3D model.

3.4 Trumpf Touch Point

Radbend introduces full support for the new Touch Point TruBend controller that has been introduced on the Trumpf 5000 (B23) series. This
includes a 3D postprocessor, ACB laser and lifts. Special work has been done to support spaces between toolparts and support for heel tools
with different negative “overlength”. This applies to tools were the tool mounting is smaller than the tool length itself.

3.5 Improved 3D Import

Direct import of 3D models into Radbend now uses new Radan 3D API calls, which makes the process faster and more reliable. The import
and healing settings that the current user has set in Radan are used.

It will now use the material detection from 3D files from Radan 3D if Radbend fails to find them. There is an extra check that ignores parts
without volume (e.g. points and lines) and support for a new version of SMX 2.03 with new bendID’s.

3.5.1 Improved Arc Approximation

For large radii, Radbend is now using a chord tolerance value (0.1mm), for small radii a minimum of 20 slices for full circles. This improves the
graphics and is more accurate when fingerstops are placed manually against arcs.

3.6 Radraft Part Editor as an Editor for Tool Profiles

The “Edit 2D profile in Radan” button in the geometry utility will now open the 2D profile in the Radan part editor and the option “save changes
and return” will return to the geometry editor.

3.7 Thumbnails for 3D bend products

When saving as .c4cx file, a part preview picture will be added to the .c4cx file. The part preview picture will be taken in part view with the part
in bent state; the image size is 120x120 pixels with 16 colours.
