Welkom

Wij heten u van harte welkom op het kerstconcert van Vocaal Ensemble
Cantate.
Ook dit jaar organiseren we als voorbereiding op het kerstfeest een
kerstconcert met veel bekende en minder bekende Carols.

Het thema is dit jaar: “Er is een Roos ontloken.”

U zult dit muziekstuk in verschillende bewerkingen horen. Wij wagen ons
zelfs aan een Zweedse uitgave van Jan Sandström. Daarnaast hoort u
muziek van Finse afkomst, gecomponeerd door Olli Kortekangas, geboren
in 1955. De Latijnse teksten zijn met vertaling in dit boekje opgenomen.
De belofte van de geboorte, van het nieuwe leven en een toekomst van
licht klinken door deze muziek heen. Het kerstfeest is op handen. “No small
wonder” van Paul Edwards sluit hier volkomen bij aan.
Wij verwachten iets groots.

Daarnaast zingen we "Salve Regina" van Arvo Pärt, de door ons geliefde
componist die dit jaar 80 is geworden. Het "O Magnum Mysterium" van
Morten Lauridsen heeft een zelfde sfeer, waarbij een groot beroep wordt
gedaan op de koorklank en de verstilling die daar doorheen klinkt. We
verwachten het in stilte en aanbidding.

Natuurlijk zingen we ook een aantal bekende Carols die bij een
kerstconcert niet mogen ontbreken. “Once in Royal David’s City” en “Hark!
The Herald Angels sing” bijvoorbeeld...
U wordt uitgenodigd een aantal coupletten met ons mee te zingen.
Op het orgel worden we begeleid door Hans Houtman. Hij zal ook een
orgelsolo verzorgen.

Wij hopen dat dit programma met bekende klanken en teksten, afgewisseld
door nieuwe muzikale ervaringen, u zal inspireren en verrijken. Cantate en
dirigent Niels Kuijers wensen u een fijn kerstconcert, rijke en sfeervolle
kerstdagen en een goed 2016 toe.

Vocaal Ensemble Cantate

Ruim dertig jaar al neemt kamerkoor “Cantate” een essentiële plaats in

binnen de koorwereld van Gorinchem en omstreken. Het koor is in de jaren
uitgegroeid van een dubbelkwartet tot een koor met 28 enthousiaste
zangers.
Niels Kuijers is al ruim 20 jaar dirigent en hij heeft met zijn bezieling, kennis
en persoonlijkheid het koor meegenomen op veel muzikale terreinen.
Vaak worden concertprogramma’s rond een gekozen thema samengesteld,
waarbij soms samenwerking wordt gezocht met andere culturele
instellingen en/of kunstenaars. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn “Waterfort” in fort
Altena, het dierenconcert, het seizoenenconcert en het psalmenconcert
“Zingen met je ogen en kijken met je oren” met kunstenares Agnes de Kok.

De muziekkeuze is zeer gevarieerd, kleine en grote werken uit de 16e tot

20e eeuw worden ingestudeerd en ten gehore gebracht: veelal a capella
werken, maar ook werken met begeleiding van orgel of een klein
instrumentaal ensemble.
Een enkele keer wordt samen met COV Laudate uit Hardinxveld-
Giessendam, waarvan Niels Kuijers ook dirigent is, een groter werk
uitgevoerd. Het laatste gezamenlijke project was een uitvoering van het
Deutsches Requiem van Brahms.
De Stichting Musica Aeterna biedt Cantate met enige regelmaat de kans,
grotere muzikale stukken met orkest ten gehore te brengen, zoals de
Messiah van Händel, de Saint Mark Passion van Wood of het
Weihnachtsoratorium van Bach. In oktober 2015 voerde Cantate het
lustrumconcert van de stichting Musica Aeterna uit onder het thema: “Der
Herr denket an uns”

De laatste jaren werkt het koor aan een homogene, vrije, beweeglijke klank
via de methode Lichtenberg, onder leiding van de bekwame docenten
Ineke Nelemans (sopraan) en Niels Kuijers.

Niels Kuijers

Niels Kuijers studeerde koordirectie aan het Rotterdams

Conservatorium. Vanaf 1995 is hij dirigent van Vocaal
Ensemble Cantate. Daarnaast dirigeert hij Vocaal Ensemble
Tiramisu uit Rotterdam en C.O.V. Laudate uit Hardinxveld
Giessendam. Met pianist Jacomijn Puite organiseert hij
regelmatig workshops voor vrouwenkoor met pianobegeleiding.

Sinds 2004 werkt Niels vanuit de methode Lichtenberg. Deze methode uit
Duitsland richt zich op klankgeoriënteerd zingen waarbij de waarneming
van de eigen klank zorgt voor herordening van het lichaam. De innerlijke
balans die hierdoor ontstaat, heeft tot gevolg dat het zingen meer als
vanzelf ervaren wordt en dat de klank voller en tegelijkertijd verfijnder en
boventoonrijker wordt. De principes van de methode Lichtenberg geven
richting aan de stemvorming van de individuele koorleden en bevorderen
een homogene, rijke koorklank.
Vanuit ‘Klankinitiatief’ organiseert hij samen met Ineke Nelemans
workshops, groepscursussen en individuele lessen. In workshops Klank &
Qigong die hij geeft met Josta Onneweer wordt de Lichtenbergmethode
gecombineerd met bewegingsoefeningen uit de Healing TAO.

Naast dirigent is Niels sinds 2007 docent dirigeertechniek bij de opleiding

Docent Muziek aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium “Codarts”.

In 2010 heeft Hans samen met een paar vrienden de stichting Musica
Aeterna opgericht waarvan hij artistiek leider is.
De stichting Musica Aeterna stelt zich ten doel het bevorderen van
klassieke muziek in de Alblasserwaard en Vijfheerenlanden. Zij wil
hoogwaardige klassieke muziek toegankelijk maken voor een breder
publiek. Hiertoe worden verschillende activiteiten georganiseerd, die
kunnen variëren van concerten van verschillende opzet tot educatieve
programma’s voor kinderen.

Hans Houtman

Hans Houtman (1976) studeerde orgel aan het Rotterdams

Conservatorium bij Bas de Vroome en Ben van Oosten. Hij
volgde koor- en orkestdirectielessen bij Barend Schuurman
en Arie van Beek.
In 2004 heeft hij zijn studie Kerkmuziek aan het Rotterdams
Conservatorium afgerond. Ook heeft hij hoofdvak orgel-improvisatie
gevolgd bij Henko de Berg in Tilburg en Hayo Boerema, organist van de
Laurenskerk te Rotterdam.
Met een studiebeurs van het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds specialiseerde hij
zich in de Frans- romantische / laat-romantische orgelmuziek bij Louis
Robilliard te Lyon.
Hans Houtman is als cantor-organist verbonden aan de Goede Herderkerk
te Rotterdam-Schiebroek, waar hij het 3-klaviers van Leeuwen-orgel
bespeelt. Als dirigent is hij verbonden aan het Hervormd Kerkkoor
Hoornaar.

In 1998 won hij de 2e prijs in de categorie “20e eeuwse muziek” van het
Nationaal Leiden orgelconcours. Daarnaast was hij winnaar van het
Internationaal César Franck Concours te Haarlem in 2004. In 2007 deed hij
mee aan het Internationaal Orgelconcours “Orgel ohne Grenzen” in drie
Europese landen (Luxemburg, Frankrijk en Duitsland), wat hem de 3e prijs
opleverde. In september 2008 won hij de 1e prijs van het Internationaal
Hermann Schroeder-orgelconcours te Trier in Duitsland.

Hans Houtman maakte diverse buitenlandse concertreizen. Na concerten in

Dublin en Galway (Ierland) werd, in een recensie, zijn spel omschreven als
“doorzichtig, virtuoos en een goed oor voor kleur in de keuze van
registraties”. Naast het geven van concerten legt Hans zich toe op het
begeleiden van koren als continuospeler. Hij heeft hiervoor een kistorgel
laten bouwen bij de orgelbouwer Henk Klop. Hij voerde o.a de volgende
werken uit: diverse Cantates, Weihnachts-Oratorium, Johannes Passion en
Matthäuspassion van J.S. Bach, Messiah van G.F. Händel, Musikalische

A blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name:

3 The shepherds at those tidings

Rejoicèd much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding,
In tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethlehem straightway
This blessèd babe to find:
