Shear Base Plate Bolt Design

1. The embedded length of bolt into concrete is usually 16 to 18 times the bolt diameter, d;
2. The bolt thread length is usually 100mm plus the bolt diameter, d;
3. The bolt grade is usually 4.6. The bolt is usually M20 for lighter construction, M24 for base plates up
to 50mm and M36 for base plates greater than 50mm;
4. The bolt clearance hole in the base plate is usually 6mm larger than the bolt diameter, d;
5. The diameter for the location tube (required for site tolerance for bolt placement) is usually 100mm
or 3 times the bolt diameter, d, whichever is greater;
6. The bedding space (required for grouting location tubes) is usually 50mm, but can be 25mm to
50mm for lightly loaded bases;
7. In base plates 700mm x 700mm and larger, a grout 50mm hole should be provided to allow trapped
air to escape and also for inspection; A grout hole should be provided for every 0.5m2 of base plate; If
grout is to be placed through the grout hole, then the diameter should be increased to 100mm;

Note bolt shear capacity in concrete embedment need to be checked independently, as it will be
more onerous than the above steel on steel checks;
