The Importance of Science in Islam

I t is incumbent upon every Muslim to seek knowledge.

This is an attitude declared in many examples in
the Holy Quran. The search for knowledge precedes
all other obligations and all Muslims are urged to
continuously pursue it:

“Say, “O my Lord! Advance me in knowledge.” “ (Ta-ha 114)

The Holy Quran emphasises science, according it a

high place as part of religion. Furthermore, the Holy
Quran shows that it is through knowledge that Man can unveil the secrets of the
universe in order to benefit from it:

“And He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth;
Behold, in that are signs indeed for those who reflect.” (Al-Jathiya: 13)

Driven by these teachings of Islam, large numbers of Muslim scholars over many
centuries have made great contributions to a wide variety of disciplines in science that
have been significant to humanity.

Some of the most noteworthy accomplishments include those of Ebn Sinaa, in his
pioneering writings in medical and pharmacological encyclopedias, Mohammed Ebn

Moussa Al Khawarezmy, the mathematician who laid the foundation for modern day
algebra, Gaber Ebn-Hayaan, known as the first practical alchemist, and Abo Ali Hassan
Ibn Al-Haitham who thoroughly studied the optical sciences and the anatomy of the eye.

During the period of Islamic growth, it became a priority to establish scientific institutions
to foster collaborative research and to pass on the knowledge gained to future
generations. Historical records show that among the oldest universities in the world are
the Al-Qaraween University (Faas, Morocco, founded in 859) and the Al-Azhar University
(Cairo, Egypt, established in 972). These achievements are a testimony to the fact that the
pursuit of knowledge in science has been important since the beginning of Islam.
