How  to  get  a  Colorado

Driver’s  License
Step  1:    Request  the  Appropriate  Letters
from  ISSS
If  you  do  NOT  have  a  social  security  number,  you  must:

1. Request  two  letters  from  ISSS:    1)  the  “social  security  denial  letter,”  and  2)  a  “driver’s  license  letter.”
You  may  request  the  letters  online  at  the  link  below,  then  pick  it  up  three  business  days  later  in  the
Office  of  International  Affairs.

2. You  must  take  the  social  security  denial  letter,  plus  your  immigration  documents  (passport,  I-‐20,  visa,
and  I-‐94)  to  the  Social  Security  Administration  located  at  1500  Champa  Street,  2nd  floor  Suite  200.    There
you  will:
a. Complete  a  form  requesting  a  social  security  number  and  give  both  the  form  and  the  social
security  denial  letter  from  ISSS  to  the  attendant.
b. The  attendant  confirms  that  you  are  not  eligible  for  a  social  security  number  and  give  you  a
letter  so  stating.

If  you  DO  have  a  social  security  number,  you  must:

1. Request  the  “driver’s  license  letter”  from  ISSS.    You  may  request  the  letters  online  at  the  link  below,

Step  2:  Get  a  Driver’s  Permit

To  get  a  driver’s  permit,  you  must  pass  a  written  knowledge  test.    There  are  two  ways  to  get  a  driver’s  permit.

A. If  you  are  NOT  an  experienced  driver,  join  a  school  for  the  30  hours  of  classroom  training  and  at  least  6
hours  of  “behind  the  wheel”  practice.
1. You  can  find  a  list  of  qualified  driving  schools  from  the  Department  of  Motor  Vehicles’  website
or  as  a  PDF.  Most  schools  are  authorized  by  the  Colorado  Department  of  Motor  Vehicles  to  give
both  the  written  test  and  the  driving  test  (check  the  PDF  at  the  link  above),  and  some  have
Chinese  speakers.
2. Take  30  hours  of  classroom  or  online  instruction  and  pass  the  25-‐question  written  test  (must  get
