Research degrees
Postgraduate research students
undertake research through
supervision with some of
Australia's leading researchers to
produce a thesis or other piece of
written or creative work.

You can choose from a Doctor of

Philosophy (PhD) or Masters of
Philosophy (MPhil) program.

A PhD requires a minimum of three years full-time study. The MPhil

program requires a minimum of one and a half years full-time study
and is designed for students with professional experience wishing
to engage in research training, but who are not in a position to
devote three or more years full-time study required for a PhD.

Coursework component
All new PhD students must complete and pass the course GSOE
9400 (Engineering Postgraduate Research Essentials) organised
by the Faculty of Engineering to obtain confirmation of candidature.
Please click here for the course outline of GSOE 9400. In addition,
PhD students may be required to complete other courses, selected
by their supervisors and approved by the Head of School, normally
in the first year of their program.

All new MPhil students must complete and pass three courses (18
UOC including GSOE9400) approved by the Head of School,
normally in the first year of their program. These courses are
selected in consultation with supervisors.

Benefits of holding a postgraduate degree

Highly-
educated

individuals are less affected by unemployment trends, because

educational attainment makes an individual more attractive in the
workforce. Lifetime earnings also increase with each level of
education attained.

3.2% employment growth per annum for people with a doctorate

(as compared to 1.5% for total employment over the period to
2020 (data from 2012 national research investment plan).
Direct access to higher paid jobs. Earn at least an extra $600
per week/starting salary (median weekly earning as compared to
a bachelor graduate - source: Bureau of Labour Statistic 2012).
High work flexibility. Work in industry, academia or both.

The School's graduates are prepared for diverse career

opportunities from academic positions at universities; policy-making
or research positions in the public sector; private sector R&D
organisations; consulting positions.
