TOBACCO-FREE SCHOOLS

1. Generally

1.1. No persons (staff, contractors, visitors) are permitted to Smoking, chewing or any other use or distribute any
tobacco products at anytime including non-school hours (24/7), in school property, on school premises, and at
school-sponsored activities away from school grounds. by staff shall be prohibited on Fauquier County Public
School property as defined below.

2. Definitions

2.1. For purposes of this policy, the following definitions shall apply:

2.1.1. “School property” shall mean all property owned, leased, rented or otherwise used by the Fauquier
County School Board, including but not limited to the following:

2.1.1.1. All interior portions of any building or other structure used for instruction, administration,
support services, maintenance or storage;

2.1.1.2. Any indoor facility or portion of such facility owned or leased or contracted for and used
for the provision of regular or routine health care, day care, or early childhood development
(Head Start) services; and

2.1.1.3. All vehicles used by the division for transporting students, staff, visitors or other persons.

2.1.1.4. in any building, structure, or vehicle, both on- and off-site

2.1.1.4.2.1.1.5. in any property surrounding buildings and structures, athletic grounds, parking lots,
or any other outdoor property, both on- and off-site

2.1.2. “Tobacco Product” shall include cigarettes, electronic cigaretteselectronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe
tobacco, blunts, bidis, snuff, chewing tobacco, electronic smoking devices, and any other products
containing nicotine, as well as any component or accessory used in the consumption of a tobacco
product, such as filters, rolling papers, pipes, and liquids used in electronic smoking devices, whether
or not they contain nicotine. and all other kinds and forms of tobacco including nicotine vapor and
alternative nicotine products prepared in such manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking or any
other manner of human consumption. “Tobacco” shall include cloves or any other product packaged
for smoking.[NSC1]

2.1.3. “ Tobacco Use Smoking” shall mean smoking, chewing, dipping, using an electronic smoking device
use, or any other use of tobacco products. the carrying or holding of any lighted pipe, cigar, or
cigarette of any kind, or any other lighted smoking equipment, or the lighting, inhaling, or exhaling of
smoke from a pipe, cigar, or cigarette of any kind.

3. Notice

3.1. This policy shall be posted on bulletin boards and announced in meetings.

3.1.3.2. Appropriate signage stating "No Smoking" will be posted in buildings and on school property in a manner and
location that adequately informs students, staff, and visitors of the policy, including at entrances to school
buildings and athletic events.

3.2.3.3. Each principal shall post signs stating “No Smoking,” or containing the international “No Smoking” symbol,
consisting of a pictorial representation of a burning cigarette enclosed in a red circle with a bar across it, clearly
and conspicuously in every school cafeteria and other dining facility in the school.

4. Violation

4.1. Staff found to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. Referrals to
resources to help staff overcome tobacco addictions shall be provided to those who are found to be in violation of
this policy.
5. Designated Smoking Areas

The School Board may consider requests for exemptions from this policy which demonstrate that extraordinary
circumstances exist to warrant such an exemption and which do not violate state or federal law.

The School Board may direct the division superintendent to issue regulations designating smoking areas on school
grounds outside buildings.
