TOBACCO USE ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

1. Generally

1.1. No persons (staff, contractors, students, visitors) are permitted to use or distribute any tobacco
products at anytime including non-school hours (24/7), in school property, on school premises, and at
school-sponsored activities away from school grounds including:

1.1.1. in any building, structure, or vehicle owned, leased, or contracted by the division, both on-
and off-site.
1.1.2. in any property surrounding buildings and structures, athletic grounds, parking lots, or any
other outdoor property owned, leased, or contracted by the divisionschool board, both on- and
off-site.
1.1.3. as otherwise provided in federal, state and local law.

1.2. In addition, no student shall be permitted to possess a tobacco product under the circumstances
described above – including while in school property, on school premises, at school-sponsored
activities away from school grounds, or at any other time that students are under the authority of
school board personnel.

1.1.1.3. Smoking is prohibited at all times and under all circumstances in all Fauquier County Public School
buildings and grounds, and as otherwise provided in federal, state and local law.

2. Definition

2.1. For the purposes of this policy, the following definitions apply.
2.1.1. “Tobacco Product” shall include cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, blunts,
bidis, snuff, chewing tobacco, electronic smoking devices, and any other products containing
nicotine, as well as any component or accessory used in the consumption of a tobacco product,
such as filters, rolling papers, pipes, and liquids used in electronic smoking devices, whether or
not they contain nicotine.

2.1.2. “Tobacco Use Smoking”shall include mean smoking, chewing, dipping, using an electronic
smoking device use, or any other use of tobacco products. the carrying or holding of any
lighted pipe, cigar, or cigarette of any kind, including, but not limited to, electronic cigarettes,
or any other lighted smoking equipment or the lighting, inhaling or exhaling of smoke form a
pipe, cigar, or cigarette of any kind.

3. “No Smoking” Signage

3.1. Appropriate signage stating "No Smoking" will be posted in buildings and on school property in a
manner and location that adequately informs students, staff, and visitors of the policy, including at
entrances to school buildings and athletic events.
3.2. Each principal shall post signs stating "No Smoking," as applicable within each school building, to
include every school cafeteria and other dining facility. The supervisor of transportation shall post
signs visible upon entering each school bus stating "No Smoking."

3.3. The signs shall state “No Smoking” or contain the international “No Smoking” symbol consisting of a
pictorial representation of a burning cigarette enclosed in a red circle with a bar across it.

4. Violation

4.1. Staff and students found to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary
action.
4.2. Visitors using tobacco products will be asked to refrain from such use or leave the premises.
