traditional worship

We begin a new year singing the Scriptures. The

opening hymn, O God, Our Help in Ages Past, is a setting
by Isaac Watts of Psalm 90. In fact, if you take the pew
Bible and compare the first several verses of the Psalm
with the verses in the hymnal, you’ll see how Watts
shaped the hymn. He actually wrote nine verses, but
six is the most you’ll find in this hymnal. Later in the
service we sing a setting of Psalm 23 in The Lord Is My
Shepherd. The closing hymn, May the Mind of Christ My
Savior, sings of the significance of using the mind in
matters of faith and practical living. In this coming
Year of the Bible not only do we focus our attention on
the Scriptures, but we sing the faith as well. Hymns
that are based on specific Scripture passages have
done a great deal to shape faith through the centuries.
Such is the case with these hymns. When I went to
Wheaton College, the tradition was, and still is, that
at graduation, the closing hymn was, May the Mind of
Christ My Savior. The senior class would sing verses
five and six acappella in parts, a tremendous text for
graduates as they entered the next chapter in their
lives. A hymn well worth memorizing! -Dr. Dan Sharp
