Description
Students will spend this semester engaging in inquiry activities to help them better
understand the world of chemistry. Students will study matter’s composition, structure,
properties, and interactions. This course will follow the Georgia Standards of Excellence in
addition to pre-IB material. All Chemistry students will also follow the curriculum
established through the Middle Years Program directed by the IBO. Students will receive
conventional grades as well as markings using IB standards.

❖ 3 Ring Binder (cannot be shared with other classes)
❖ Composition notebook
❖ Expo or dry erase markers
❖ Tabs or dividers for binder
❖ Colored pens for grading
❖ Calculator: TI-30XIIS or similar scientific calculator

Electronic Use Policy


This classroom infuses technology in all aspects of learning. Students are encouraged to
use personal laptops, tablets/iPads and cell phones for academic purposes only.
However, if these tools become a distraction and prevent students from learning, they will
be confiscated for that class period. The responsible use of technology is a privilege; any
misuse or abuse of this privilege will result in the loss of the privilege as well as the item
being mishandled.
Grades
80 % Summative (Choice assignments, MYP projects, lab notebook, tests and quizzes)
20% Final Exam

Students will be assessed every Tuesday of the semester (this includes


quizzes and unit exams). One quiz per unit will be counted as summative, the rest
will be formative. Test remediation and quiz corrections will be available to anyone
scoring below mastery (70%). See teacher for more details.

Late or Missing Assignments


All students have up to two weeks to make up any late or missing assignments with the
teacher. Teachers will continue to accept completed work through the fifth week of each
grading period. The sixth week of the grading period will be utilized for grading and posting
the late work. No late or missing assignment will be accepted once progress report
grades are submitted for that unit. All late work is subject to a penalty of up to
30%.

Absences
Students are responsible for any work they missed on days they were absent. The student
should come see the teacher before or after school the day they return to see what they
missed.

Flipped lessons
Students will receive most direct instruction through the use of recorded video lessons
created by the teacher or other source that is relevant to the content. Students are
responsible for viewing these videos at home and keeping excellent notes in their binder.

Parents can access all their student’s grades through Aspen. I look forward to a
