STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name: Subin Roshan February 25, 2017 M.S. (Construction Engineering & Management)
I came to KSA when I was barely a year old. Since then I grew up fascinated by the growth, development
and prosperity this nation has achieved. Construction Industry being the key indicator of the development
of this country attracted my attention at a very early age. My grandfather and my father also worked in
the construction industry in KSA. When the time arrived to select my career, I did not have to think twice
to eventually become a third generation professional in the construction industry in this prestigious
kingdom.

After finishing my school education in Jeddah, I studied Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the
University of Calicut in India. I followed it up with a certificate diploma in quantity surveying before
starting my career. I am currently working on the Industrial Support Facilities package for Al Fadhili Gas
Plant for Saudi Aramco as a Planning and Risk Control Engineer in a major EPC contracting company. Even
though this is my third year at work I have maintained my interest in academics by completing various
certification courses available online by some of the prestigious Universities like Arizona State University,
University of Columbia, University of California and the University of Illinois.

During the final year of my bachelor’s degree, I was part of a project which gained much appreciation
from academic community as well as the local society. As a part of this project, we developed a method
which had the potential to reduce the construction cost of affordable houses by a significant margin. Later
we implemented this idea by building a house for a homeless family. This project was very special to me
because it helped me to express my core values. Firstly, I consider creative thinking to be one of my main
qualities and always thrive to produce groundbreaking innovative ideas. Secondly, I have been always
empathetic towards the poor, economically and socially backwards people and helping them is always my
passion. I have also completed a certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in order
to help people who do not have access to good quality education and to improve their living standards.

In today’s era of mega projects, construction has become extremely complex and the experience and
knowledge of fields like engineering, planning, cost control and contracts management individually will
not suffice to overcome the challenges which arise in multi-billion riyal projects. As I am currently working
on a mega project, I have understood the cardinal importance of expanding my knowledge and learning
Construction Engineering and Management which will enable me to manage a construction project
overall. This quest for knowledge and development has lead me to pursue Master of Science in
Construction Engineering and Management from King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals.

I fully understand the challenges which may arise when pursuing a part-time Master of Science degree
while working on a full-time job. But my unquenchable thirst for knowledge has compelled me for this
application even after I was declined admission in the last intake. I have a lot of colleagues who are
currently pursuing part time studies from King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals and some
friends who graduated a while ago. From them and from a lot of other highly qualified and distinguished
personalities I came to learn a lot about the quality and standard of the faculty and the courses at King
Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals. Getting selected at this prestigious university which is one
of the best places to learn Construction Engineering and Management worldwide and undoubtedly the
best university in GCC would be nothing less than a dream come true for me. I guarantee that if I am given
a chance, I will prove myself worthy of it and I will use the knowledge I gain and to shed light into the lives
of a lot of people.
