Use your
creativity to
earn some
extra cash!

10 americangirlmagazine.com
Getting Started
b Ask a parent’s permission before making
and selling crafts, and talk with them
about any rules they may have.
b Invite a friend to do the craft sale with
you. Share the work, the cost of the
supplies, and the profits, too!
b Give yourself enough time to make all
the crafts before the sale. Start a week
or two in advance.
b Supplies can be found at craft stores or
discount stores. Sometimes you can find
items sold in bulk, which is cheaper
when you are making a lot of items.

Where to Sell
b A good way to get customers is to
arrange to sell your products at garage
sales, school stores, bake sales, outdoor
markets, and other community events.
Ask a parent to help you find an event
that’s right for you.

What to Charge
b Charging the right price for a product is
important. Buyers want a fair price, and
you want to earn a profit (money left
over after expenses). A good trick is to
figure out how much it costs to make
each craft, then double that amount to
get the minimum price you should
charge. See the example below.

Snack Mix
This mix is a good snack to eat between
games. Mix a dried tropical fruit mix with
popcorn. Or mix in your own favorite
dried fruits—strawberry, pineapple, and
mango are delicious. Top with chopped
macadamia nuts and shredded coconut.

Lava Punch
Serve a punch with some punch! Before
pouring your favorite red punch into a
plastic cup, squeeze strawberry syrup onto
a small plate. Pour red popping candy onto
the syrup and then in the red popping
candy. Fill the cup with punch and take a
sip—it’s like an erupting volcano!

Aloha

Pair up and choose one girl to be the
model and one to be the designer.
Each pair has to use paper streamers
to design and make a hula outfit in
5 minutes. Model the creations by
dancing across the yard.

Island Hop
Divide into two teams. Each team
needs two beach towels—one to
lay on the ground and one to hold.
To start, each team stands on its first
towel. On “Aloha!” each team must
lay the second towel down and then
move to that towel without any players
stepping on the grass. Once everyone
is on the second towel, the team picks
up the first towel and places it in front
of themselves. Keep going until a
team reaches the finish line.

Pretend that you just arrived in Hawaii.
In this game, all players can speak only in
questions. One player starts by asking a
question to another player, such as, “What
would you like to do in Hawaii?” That player
has to answer with another question, such
