Core Course: Advanced Topics in Aerospace Engineering
(Syllabus prepared by IIAEM) (i) Various types of Loads on aircraft. Behavior of thin walled structures under shear, bending and torsion loads. Metallic and non-metallic materials for aircraft structures. (ii) Take-off, climb, cruise, descent and landing performance estimation for aircraft. Method of choice of aircraft engine to meet specified performance. Fundamentals of aircraft stability. (iii) Computational methods dealing with large deformations of aircraft components. Material non-linear analysis and in-elastic deformations. Contact stress analysis. Efficient solvers for FEM analysis. Solutions using parallel computers. (iv) Fundamentals of composite materials and structures. Various fibers and matrices for aerospace applications. Thermo-plastic matrices. FEM analysis for composite wing and fuselage primary structural components. (v) Basics of wind tunnel testing. Scale effectcorrection for Reynolds’ number. Design of wind tunnel models. Composites for wind tunnel model. Wall effects. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD to replace wind tunnel testing. (vi) Various types of aircraft engines. Optimum conditions for which different engines perform best. Thrust vs speed curves for jet engines and power vs speed curves for piston engines. Engine Thrust/aircraft weight ratio for various airplanes. (vii) Importance and role of Avionics - The Avionic environment - Displays and Man-Machine interaction - Aircraft control - Air data systems - Avionic systems integration
